A Heartland woman was put in emergency protective custody, after she asked Omaha Police Officers to kill her.

The night of Wednesday, October 15th started off bad and got worse for the 26-year old woman.

Omaha Police were sent to the area of 72nd and Sorensen Parkway to look for an erratic and reckless driver.

Officers pulled the La Vista woman over in a nearby parking lot and became suspicious because of her demeanor.

A K-9 was brought in for a "free air sniff" and hit on what police have determined was marijuana in the glove box. The woman was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

From there the story trends to the bizarre.

While being taken in for booking the 26-year old managed to get her foot beneath the protective partition in the cruiser. According to police reports she began kicking the officer and actually broke two of the cruisers cup-holders.

It was when the woman allegedly made statements about not wanting to live, and asking the officers to kill her she was taken into emergency protective custody and handed over to the staff of Immanuel Medical Center.

Here's a thought...Maybe this woman actually does suffer from mental illness and isn't trying to 'beat the system'. Or maybe I'm the one who is crazy.

Don't get me wrong and don't think I am targeting any one, but apparently no one on here knows how the system works. Being a person who works in a hospital and see's these types of people all the time, I can tell you that just because a person is issued and EPC (Emergency Protective Custody) doesn't mean that they get a "get out of jail free card." Many times they will go to a designated place, Immanuel or Lasting Hope and get evaluated. Before they are released from there they have a hearing or something similar which can include jail time, if charges are pending. As for this story.... I just don't know, it makes it sound like people don't get EPC's slapped on them very often. I can tell you one thing, I work at a West Omaha Hospital and we have had 5 EPC patients in the last 2 days. So this is nothing new. I have heard Law Enforcement state over and over that people say they want to die and if they will kill them. I have had patients state this to me personally. It is nothing new.

Either she knows this is the way to stay out of prison, or we need a safe haven law for adults now!

sounds to me like the committed heartland woman would have rather gone to a mental facility than the jail, she knew how to work the system.

I'm thinking she figured out she was going to jail, and decided being committed was far better. 3 days, and she could be out. Crazy like a fox! Guess she realized her problems were just beginning, huh!

A cry for help or a clever way to get out of going to jail...

How sad. Hopefully this woman gets the help she needs. This is a serious cry for help if I ever saw one....
