Cruiser Crash Caught On Camera
Sarpy County Sheriff’s Deputy Greg Freeborn has investigated hundreds of accidents. He never expected to be in one while on duty and in a marked cruiser.
The crash last week was captured by a digital camera system aimed out the windshield.
Deputy Freeborn says, “I didn’t think I would be spun around like that at a lower speed.”
The impact switched on the camera which like a DVR system rolled back to record about 30 seconds before the crash.
Video shows the deputy had a green light.
Deputy Freeborn says, “In my case it clearly showed I’m not at fault”.
Three Sarpy County cruisers have the digital cameras.
The systems also capture speed and turn signal activation.
“That eliminates the he said she said situation.” Deputy Freeborn said.
All images and information on the digital camera system is transmitted from the cruiser to sheriff’s headquarters. That eliminates claims of doctored video.
Sheriff’s captain Rolly Yost says, “Like they say in football irrefutable video evidence.”
The cameras cost about $6,000 dollars each.
Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis hopes a grant will help him pay for six more digital camera systems.
