Convicted Murderer Gets New Trial

It's the first time in Nebraska DNA has freed an inmate. Two men convicted in the rape and murder of a 68-year old woman have changes coming in their cases.

A Saline County judge ruled Wednesday that Joseph White should get a new trial in the rape and murder of Helen Wilson. The judge also ruled Thomas Winslow will be resentenced.

The two men were convicted in the 1985 murder of Wilson in Beatrice, but new DNA evidence raised questions about their convictions. Attorneys filed motions in August arguing that new DNA tests had cleared White and Winslow of Wilson's rape and murder.

Nebraska's DNA testing law is about 7 years old and came in response to a state Supreme Court ruling in 2000 that rejected a request to do DNA testing on evidence in a Lincoln murder.
