The presidential race is heating up and some metro kids are taking part in the action. Although they can't quite vote yet, elementary students are weighing in on who they think is best for the job.

Monday was day one of the "can"didate drive at Carriage Hill and Skyline elementary schools.

Students choose whether to put their donated canned goods in the Obama or McCain designated barrells.

Just like adults, some are undecided. “I’m probably going to bring 3 or 4 tomorrow and I don’t know who I’m voting for yet. I’m going to wait to decide that later.” Says 5th Grader Jordan Peterson.

Others know exactly who they are voting for and why.

“I voted for John Mccain because I think that he’ll have a lot of confidence for our country.” Says 5th Grader Jae-lyn Takemura.

Student Beth Forsyth says it’s good to have a chance to get involved. “If you could vote, you actually, you get a chance. Instead of just staying at home and listening to what your parents can do, you get to do something for once.”

The barrells will be weighed by the food bank, where all of the donations will end up on Monday October 20th. The winning candidate will be announced by each school.

So far republican John McCain is winning the race at Carraige Hill.

The school that weighs in the most can goods will win a visit from local magician Jeff Quinn.

Obama ended up winning - but it was close!!! Ultimately, the collection equalled about 850 meals, which was the ultimate purpose. Great job!

One of my children went to Carriage Hill and they've always had fun, creative ways to involve the children. Good going, Carriage Hill! It's great to see this happening.

This is the total package. Creative idea, fun, educational and teaching kids about helping their own.

What a great idea! It'll be nice to give children a voice in an election that will affect them the most. Good job!

What irony in this story. If Obama is elected as the next President of this great country, we can look forward to nothing but can goods for after he taxes us with his socialistic programs, we will not have any money to buy anything else....

Only 2 choices? The indoctrination starts early.

Woodmen of the World Lodge 709 presented this idea to the Food Bank, approached elementary schools to host the Pick Your CANdidate food drive, and provided all the promotional materials (posters, decorations, etc.). We were very proud to be involved - to help kids become more politically active while supporting a great cause!
