Another volatile day on Wall Street has many of us trying to find any silver lining or other ways to create a diversion. The timing couldn't have been better since Friday was National Depression Screening Day.
More than 1,000 sites across the country offered services including Capstone Behaviorial Health at 42nd and Center. Free and anonymous screenings were offered to assess our risk for depression.
In Council Bluffs, many found the silver lining at a gas station. "Stock market goes down and so does gas," said Jennifer Heywood.
For the first time in a year, she didn't mind buying gas. It's easier to say that when it dropped to $2.56 a gallon at Andrews Lounge. "We're trying to catch up. Bills have been falling behind because of the way the economy's going. If it goes like this, things will get better."
"I plugged it in last night and have gas for all week,” said Bob Heffernan. “You can't beat that." His electric ride gets good mileage.
Halloween is still a few weeks away, but some decided a trip into nature at Wenninghoff Farms at 85th and Sorensen Parkway was a welcome diversion.
Navigating a corn maze is easy compared to the financial crisis. Many people are looking for anything to relieve stress, though none of it fazes 6-year-old Cale Bird. "I already got my costume, Anakin Skywalker."
Many families are working to find a balance between living and the budget. "For one, next weekend we're going to Indian Cave State Park for camping instead of maybe going somewhere else exotic," said Mandy Taylor.
It can be a matter of the small things making a big difference in our everyday lives, like the money the Heywoods saved on gas. "We're hoping to go to the haunted houses," said Jennifer. "He won't go, but me and daddy will like it."
Getting a break from the children sometimes can help our sanity, too.
For anyone who couldn't make it to a mental health screening Friday, BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln offers free, online screenings year-round.
