West Des Moines has approved restrictions on how many unrelated adults can live together in the same house. Only three unrelated adults will be allowed to live in a single-family home.

City officials say the restrictions can reduce problems with parking, traffic and noise that is sometimes associated with over-occupied homes.

The ordinance was approved 3 to 1, with Councilman Ted Ohmart the lone no vote. He says the ordinance is needed but is too restrictive. He thinks the limit should be four.

The law is modeled after an Ames ordinance that was upheld last year by the Iowa Supreme Court.
Violators could be fined up to $750 for a first offense and $1,000 for subsequent offenses.

It seems that the size of the house should have an impact on this as well. I understand concerns, especially in some of the below-mentioned situations where many, many people are living in a house together - but if they are related, its okay then???? What's next? Maybe we'll limit how many cars one can own...

Here in South Omaha there are many houses in which 30 or more people live. At any time there may be 12 or 14 vehicles parked around such residences. If anyone thinks such a situation wouldn't cause a problem, just wait tell it's next door to you. Good job Des Moines. Wish the housing ordinances were inforced here in South O.

I hope they place restrictions in N.E. Omaha for illegal tenants. I live by someone by tenants now in my neighborhood that are rentals and the house is like a Holiday Inn Express...dont know who really lives in the house. They are section eight people who dont have a job, but for some odd reason, they seem to come up with rent money for the next month. They constantly have traffic going and coming to and from the house and the sad part about it all is they have Iowa license plates on their cars. Maybe this is the reason why they came from Iowa to N.E Omaha. To commit crime and get away with it. Low Life Losers!

Ok so what about cousins? How about 2 married couples with one from each couple being siblings. HA! I think they made more of a headache for themselves.

Hopefully they don't pass something like this in California. If they did we would have to get rid of one of the "Girls Next Door." That would be a sad day for everyone. Just one more unnecessary way for the government to encroach on our personal lives.

Ridiculous! During these difficult economic times when young people make living arrangements to reduce the financial strain they have to come up with this.

I'm surprised the ACLU hasn't stuck their nose in this.
