A decision by Ebay to cut 10 percent of its workforce is affecting Paypal workers in Nebraska. A Paypal spokeswoman says some employees will be let go, but did not specify how many.

Paypal's LaVista office opened in March of 2003. The company is owned by Ebay, which announced Monday it is laying off some 1,600 workers worldwide.

While some employees in LaVista are being let go, the Paypal spokeswoman said the company will continue to hire for other positions.

Agreeing with others, PayPal isn't all its cracked up to be. I worked there for five months and left on my own. They're a bunch of liars and they steal peoples money. It's that simple, it doesn't take a genius to figure out the fraud they are performing on an hourly basis. Don't ever tie your personal bank account to the PayPal system because sooner or later you will get hacked and chances are its happening from the inside. Consider PayPal and ebay for what it really is...a bunch of hype.

PayPal is not letting go of the cust. resps or fruad depts. They are getting rid of useless depts. they are hiring more cust reps. to better serve our customers. It has nothing to do with us snotty cust rep college students that work there, its the people who made the career out of PayPal who were let go; salary people. LOL lots of people are so wrong. I can't say much more! True PayPal is starting to SUCK!

You know it isn't just PayPal. Many companies are "outsourcing" to other countries where they don't need to pay nearly as much in wages. How many times have you called a help line or sales line and had a hard time just communicating with the person on the other end. Nearly everytime I call, I can barely understand the person trying to help. We really need our jobs back in this country.

PayPal has had an office in Dublin, Ireland for around 3 years now.

Posted by: To Mary on Oct 8, 2008 at 02:42 PM
Mary: Ireland provides huge tax incentives for Corporations...I hadn't heard they were opening an office there, but, if they are, that's why. So sorry folks are being laid off...I almost took a job there!

Funny that this is even a "story" Mutual of Omaha has been doing this for years!!!

On the debate: We need change in our goverment I dont understand what the people are listening to one thing we dont need is more of what we have had in the last eight years so open up your heads and listen. We dont need experience in getting it changed we neeed some one that has us in front of every thing else and some one that can surrond them selves with the people to do the rest and evaluate there thoughts and then act so lets give Obama the power to do this and not have another fours years of what we have had in the past.Obama is trying to tell you to look and see what is going on around you cross the line and get behind him at least he will give us a chance.

Your first mistake is expecting PayPal to make sense. Have you ever called in? I worked there for three and a half years and am very happy that I left on my own. They are a very unhealthy employer... they are a stressful place to work and I know of people that have been disabled by PayPal's work environment. They are doing people a favor by letting them go. Life is too short to live the PayPal way. Get your severance checks and file for disability. No one would blame you. It's called P.(paypal) T.(tramatic)S.(stress) D.(disorder) and I know all about it. Get out with your sanity and don't let a website define who you are.

Let's all just call PayPal what it is: A business. It makes money and the employees win; when it loses, the easiest way to recover losses is to reduce headcount. I'm not a PayPal employee and I prefer my small business where we all know each other, people have faces and personal situations, and if you want to let someone go you have to bring them into the office, look them in the eye and have the courage to do it right there yourself, and then you deal with the consequences. One of the problems today is a lack of personal responsibility. Someone high up in eBay headquarters in San Jose, CA (who owns PayPal) made this decision and delegated the poor local people in Omaha to fire their friends; all of the benefits and none of the gut-wrenching responsibility. Yes, for quite awhile PayPal has looked good on paper: But not so long ago so did Enron, Lehman Brothers, WorldComm, and more we can all name. The instability comes from strecthing yourself so thin for the quick dollar.

Don't worry everybody. The fundamentals of the economy are strong.

Posted by: moreta on Oct 7, 2008 at 05:52 PM
There is a place in Council Bluffs that hires all the time and then tells the currently people well call about 1 and we will see if there is any work for you today" meanwhile you walk past people who are filling out the applications and getting hired.

Posted by: Blue collar on Oct 7, 2008 at 05:43 PM
why doesnt the law worry more about the practices of employers and how they can just drop their employees off at the local bus station, with out any reprecutions to follow. paypal isnt the only company who can and will do this. many have and many will soon do the same.

Posted by: to no paypal fan on Oct 7, 2008 at 04:41 PM
You let a job get bewteen you and your husband? Wow - talk about a throw away country these days. Hey - I hear you can drop your kids off at the local ER without getting in trouble. Don't try to work for anything.

No PayPal fan, don't blame PayPal for your failed marriage. Look in the mirror.

Posted by: Jake on Oct 7, 2008 at 03:31 PM
Hildo gets it. Why can't the rest of you? Who wants to take a 50% reduction in pay to stay employed? With the way people complain about gas going up ten cents or a $20 annual increase in pet licensing fees, I would argue that most of you don't have the luxury of being able to work for less pay.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 7, 2008 at 02:32 PM
this is what happens when you everbodies debt. you leave us with out jobs are you happy

Posted by: No PayPal fan on Oct 7, 2008 at 01:37 PM
Ah yes, PayPal. My ex works there. He is my ex because PayPal became his life. Oh sure, he made and probably still makes good money, and all it cost was our marriage. I probably would have had a chance had it been another woman, but I sure couldn't compete with PayPal. Needless to say, I think the place is poision and always have - even before our split. The best thing that could happen to that company is to have it pull up stakes and get the heck outta here.

Posted by: Hildo on Oct 7, 2008 at 12:38 PM
I disagree that the blame should fall on "Corporate America." Corporations are what keep this economy going (good or bad). I agree that laid-off employees should get "dibs" on new positions, but that may not always be possible. Also, Omaha is not insulated from the nation's problems, so yes, it can happen "right here at home." A company's listing on the "top 10 places to work" means that they provide good benefits and nice facilities and amenities, but if the corporate office says you gotta go, you gotta go. No more nice lunchroom or basketball court for you!

Posted by: H on Oct 7, 2008 at 12:17 PM
There's ads in the paper, on t.v. and on the internet saying that Paypal is hiring. If they are hiring, why the heck are they laying people off? I agree with HHHMMMNNN and Papillion Man. Yeah, it's such a great place to work until they become just like any other company in this country. Maybe they should lay of one or two of the executives. I'm sure that would pay the 1,600 employees' wages.

Why is Pay Pal opening new office in Ireland?

Posted by: cece on Oct 7, 2008 at 10:52 AM
Hold on a second. Read the story again. Where does it say what positions will be let go and where does is say what positions will they continue to hire? If they are letting go call center type positions and continue to hire positions that require a specific skill set, it would be difficult to simply move those people into those jobs. It may not be about caring for your employees or having morals or scruples. It would be a bad business move if a company simply put someone in a position just because they liked them. A person should be qualified for a position. With that said, I understandthis way of thinking is not popular as does not help to reinforce the 'corporate America looking out for only themselves' crap. They may just be trying to continue to be successful and KEEP their employees employed.

Posted by: NOT SURPRISED on Oct 7, 2008 at 10:09 AM
Well, who didn't see this coming. Oh well, all good (and questionable) things will come to an end. And by the way Papillion Man, from what I understand morals is not something that is in abundant supply at PayPal. Why do you think it got the rep as one of the 10 best places to work so quickly? Everything that glitters ain't gold. Yep - the grass always seems greener some place else - until you realize how much more water is needed to keep it that way. I sure hope all the people who left First National and other local long standing employers did so in good standing - cause I have a feeling they will be going back!!

Posted by: Six-Year Friend on Oct 7, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Omaha should know that while PayPal is advertising on billboards on the interstate for new employees, people with good records are getting axed in a bad economy with NO notice and they are NOT being offered any alternative positions inside the company, even if it is a demotion or pays less (my ten-year friend called me and talked to me yesterday about him getting canned). OMAHA NEEDS TO STOP TALKING ABOUT AND TREATING PAYPAL LIKE THEY ARE THE GREATEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD. WHEN THEY AREN'T PROFITABLE, THEY FIRE JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. PayPal workers sign confidentiality agreements because of the highly sensitive nature of their work, but that also becomes a blanket statement to keep them from saying ANYTHING about the company. OMAHA, WAKE UP: PAYPAL MIGHT BE A GOOD COMPANY, BUT THEY ARE *JUST* A COMPANY, AND JOB SECURITY THERE IS AS UNREALISTIC AN ILLUSION AS ANYWHERE ELSE IN THIS "EMPLOY-AT-WILL" STATE.

Posted by: To HHHMMNNN and Pap Man on Oct 7, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Employees are not fungible commodities - I would not hire the kid who does my lawn to prepare my taxes. A customer service rep at PayPal may not have the skills to take on a position in the fraud prevention section. As for layoffs, expect many many more, especially in the financial services, retail and restaurant industries. Consumers have stopped spending.

Posted by: Bob on Oct 7, 2008 at 09:55 AM
Knowing what corporate America is like, sometimes a cleaning house needs to be done as people get employed that are not always as qualified as their resume stated. If they are not moving these folks to the open positions, hopefully they fall into the catagory I speak of.

Posted by: give them a chance on Oct 7, 2008 at 09:53 AM
I think one of the reasons why they lay off instead of filling current employees with those positions is the pay scale they can't go down in pay. They can hire a person for say 13.00 for the customer service postion while the current employee makes 20.00 an hour, that's my understanding. but i do have to agree at least offer the position to the laid off employees first and if they want to take the pay cut then that's their choice.

Posted by: Papillion Man on Oct 7, 2008 at 09:40 AM
There goes the theory of one of the top 10 places to work. I agree 100% with HHHMMMNNN. We should be giving these positions to the ones who are laid off. Any good company with a shred of morals or scruples would agree. What a bad business move. "PAYPAL A BAD PLACE TO WORK!"

Posted by: Omahan on Oct 7, 2008 at 08:41 AM
...and so it begins right here at home.

Posted by: HHHMMNNN on Oct 7, 2008 at 08:38 AM
...IF PAYPAL WILL CONTINUE HIRING FOR "OTHER POSITIONS" THEN WHY CAN'T SOME OF THE WORKERS BE PLACED IN THE JOBS THAT ARE OPEN?!! DOESN'T THAT MAKE SENSE?! CERTAINLY IF THE WORKERS ARE ALREADY WORKING FOR THE COMPANY SIMPLE PRODUCT/COMPANY KNOWLEDGE HAS TO BE A HEADS UP OVER SOMEONE COMING IN FROM THE OUTSIDE WITH NO EXPERIENCE WITH THE COMPANY,GIVE THE PERSONS ALREADY EMPLOYED THERE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE PLACED IN THE JOBS,THE ECONOMY IS HARD ENOUGH WITHOUT PEOPLE HAVING TO GO THROUGH THE PROCESS OF LOOKING FOR ANOTHER JOB WHEN THERE ARE JOBS OPEN IN THE COMPANY THEY WORK FOR.(OF COURSE THEY'LL SAY THEY'RE NOT QUALIFIED; ALWAYS AN EXCUSE).HAVE SOME LOYALTY TO YOUR EMPLOYEES FOR A CHANGE. THAT'S CORPORATE AMERICA FOR Y0U,LOOKING OUT FOR #1.
