Flashing lights and police cruisers are a pretty rare sight on the east end of Gifford Park, but the scene last night is just the latest in an increasingly violent past few weeks.

Mike Barr says, "Couple of weeks ago there was that throat slash, slitting over there and there was some shooting over on 33rd and Myrtle."

Mike Barr has lived in the neighborhood for two years, and says this level of violence is out of the norm.

This part of Gifford Park has it's seedier elements, but it's close to the Creighton campus, students find the low rents and proximity to class appealing, and until recently have been insulated from some of the violence breaking out in other parts of the city.

Andrew Gustafson says, "OPD comes by here I see cars come by once in a while and Creighton, they can't patrol all of Omaha so it's not their responsibility."

Andrew Gustafson teaches at Creighton, and lives in the neighborhood, he's also the faculty moderator the Nippoldt's fraternity, the Pikes.

Andrew Gustafson says, "Right now we're talking a little bit to Creighton about security in this area so those kind of things I just act on their behalf as a faculty moderator."

Gustafson says with so many students living in the neighborhood they can look out for each other, it's an idea that could cut down on the number of opportunities crooks have, and give students peace of mind.

Mike Barr says, "Walking from my car to my house you know that could be an issue now and that's kind of scary."

S-what "bad parts" are you driving through? I live and work in North Omaha and there are cops everywhere. Maybe the area you think is bad really isn't that terrible or you're driving through at noon. Cops can't be at every corner 24/7 and just sit there.

My husband is a medical student at Creighton & there is absolutely no way I would live ANYWHERE near that campus...we have told all of our friends not to rent or buy down there either. I feel badly for people who come here not having anyone to suggest where to or in this case NOT to live.

I agree with Katie. Students flock to that neighborhood because of: marginally lower rent, most of that immediate area is on the university shuttle route, and its close proximity to Creighton's campus and CUMC. Creighton can't do much to protect its students when they live off campus, and campus security has no jurisdiction off university grounds. The neighborhood isn't necessarily a hotbed for crime, but it isn't the safest either (no area of town is truly "safe"). If I had a college-age kid that didn't want to live on campus, I personally would not allow them to live in in that neighborhood. Living on campus may crimp their style, but it's much safer. College students sometimes think they're invincible, but they tend to be prime targets for crime. I'm glad this incident didn't result in a death, but it appears that it came very close to that. It also appears that the victim did the right thing (gave them what they wanted), yet was shot anyway. Could have happened anywhere.

Hey lived there...last I checked MIP was against the law. So, if they are writing tickets then they are policing criminals.

S- Did you see the part of the article where it says flashing lights are a rare sight on the East end of Gifford park? That is because it is not where the most "crime is happening". This is not a gang hot spot area and has not been the sight of back and forth retalitory shootings etc. If you have not seen a cop while driving around in North Omaha over the last week you need to open your eyes while you drive. There have been so many cops on extra patrols this last week they don't even have enough cars to drive and practically run into each other at every turn. It just goes to show that putting more cops out there can't stop everything. Without the public help these thugs can't be put away. Hopefully this young man doesn't have the "no snitchin" attitude that is so prevalant in gang neighborhoods, and he can ID his attackers.

Katie..."it may not be the cool thing to do, but live on campus" And what? Be gouged by CU once again to live in an overpriced dorm that they call an apartment? Believe it or not many CU students (especially grad students) live wherever it is the cheapest and closest to campus..because we don't have mommy and daddy paying our over-priced on-campus rent. There are dozens of CU students in that area...because it is cheap housing and on the shuttle line.

It may not be the cool thing to do, but live on campus, or live at least in Dundee or over by the Med Center. It's close to campus, and a much safer neighborhood.

I lived three houses away from the Pike house when I was in college. It is scary how awful that neighborhood has gotten even in the 15 years that I have been gone. Hope the student is doing well, and I hope that the police beef up patrols. Maybe there could be a little more policing of criminals and less of the MIP policing business they run in that neighborhood.

Hey Frank Brown, how do we stop this senseless shooting? You criticize the police, make excuses for "witnesses" not cooperating, yet you never, and I mean never, offer a tangible solution. You scream about lack of jobs, yet this has been a constant complaint for at least 30 years. You and Ernie have done nothing about jobs. In fact, in your tenure, Omaha's become #1 for poverty among black kids. Yet you continue to complain, treat white peole like dirt, and generally do nothing. Things will never change, Frank (just like you).

Police can't patrol everywhere, but why not patrol more often where the crime is happening? Maybe then we would catch some of these criminals! I drive through the "bad parts" of Omaha daily and very rarely see an officer!
