A big eyesore in one of Omaha's busiest parks.

Graffiti vandals are at it again --- this time targeting the swimming pool at Elmwood Park.

It's a growing problem across the city and people have had enough.

Thousands go by it daily.

Either by car, on foot, even while pushing a stroller.

The Elmwood Park swimming pool --- a popular place on a hot summer day.

But also apparently popular with the night-time criminal element.

Graffiti vandals got loose inside the fenced in area, causing severe damage inside the pool.

The front of the building was hit as well.

The criminals brazenly crossed out Omaha on one sign and scribbled in their own name.

"It's kind of a shame buildings like this, there's no need for that, it just makes the city look degraded and stuff, brings it down,"
said Adam Vinter of Papillion.

"I see it every single day,” Kayla Erk of Omaha said. “I look at it every single day. It's not something that doesn't catch my eye."

"I think it represents Omaha badly and I think they need to clean it up," said Marcie Sinn of Omaha.

But it's not that simple.

A city spokesman tells Channel Six News special treatments need to be done to properly cover up this mess on the pool's surface.

In addition, heavily damaged children's slides could be costly to cover up.

"And money's tight everywhere and then the money the city spends fixing something like that diverts money from something else that might be needed so it's a tough situation all the way around I think," said Mary Pat Paul who lives near the park.

"Any time I see graffiti in the park, it's troubling," said Tina Franklin who also lives near the park.

She adds that we all need to report graffiti as soon as possible.

Franklin hopes the city gets around to cleaning up the pool area quickly.

"You have to prioritize and I suppose other things are getting the priority treatment and maybe this is falling by the wayside, but I hate to see that," she said.

And no one likes what vandals left behind.

"It makes us all look trashy," said Marcie Finn.

The city is aware of the problem at Elmwood Park's pool and plans to address it as soon as possible.

The city's graffiti van has a summer-time backlog of about 50 calls --- highlighting the need for a second graffiti removal van.

A city spokesman tells us another van should be ready to hit Omaha streets later this fall.

i wonder who it was??????really.. im not saying its me or nothing but i wonder who would do such a thing like that. They should at least get permission to express themselvees and not vandalize city property

If they signed their name them make them pay when they are arrested. Charge the gang like they are a corporation and sue them for their holdings.

Well, let's roll that new graffiti van and bill the owner of Elmwood Pool as per the law. The city shouldn't be exempt if Joe Public is!

If that pool had a safety pool cover on it for the winter like it should, this would not have happened on the inside of the pool and the pool would be safer in the winter as well. Grafitti is for loosers! I purposely do not look or read it when I see it.

I wish these punks would learn respect. Even in "tagging" and "graffiti" culture there are rules. The vermin that go do this steal any credibility from those who create art.

How do I get a job with a graffiti van? Sounds like it's really secure work, as long as the mayor and police keep up their inaction.

Well a start would be to install some lights in the parking lot. That area is pitch black at night. About once a week, I see a pile of shattered glass from cars being broken into. Lastly, an overlay of asphalt would do wonders as well. Thanks.

Elmwood park is one of the most beautiful parks this city has. So beautiful that we chose that park for our wedding this past August. It's sickening how someone could go and do such a thing. What's wrong with people these days?

Let's see. Omaha has an anti graffiti ordinance that says that Omaha citizens need to clean up graffiti on their property but the city can let it sit. Have an idea...Why not get the citizens together and go paint it. So it will take special treatment...why not cover it so it is not an eye sore. They can choose to do it or else citizens can and then they have more to clean up. Sounds like Omaha people need to start standing up for this stuff.

I just don't see the need for young people to do graffiti. The general public hasn't got the faintest idea of what those scribbles represent. If they are trying to say look what I can do....I don't even know who you are. They aren't getting credit for it because know one knows who they are. Just doesn't make sense to me to go through the effort to vandalize something with your gang sign if the general public doesn't even know what that means.

I could do the job of the graffiti van at twice the pace for half the price. I'd be glad to do the job if someone could tell me who I need to talk to. It seems like a horrible waste of tax money for a job being done very poorly.
