A young man is hospitalized in stable condition after being shot in the chest Monday morning.

20-year-old Eric Nippoldt told Omaha police he was walking to a fraternity house near 31st and Chicago shortly after 1 a.m. when he was approached by three males. The victim told officers the three displayed a firearm and demanded money. The men took an undetermined amount of cash and fired the weapon in the direction of the victim.

There have been no arrests.

I guess i'm not normal because I work a 4to midnight shift instead of being home in bed at that time. Maybe some people have a 9 to 5 job.

People accuse Omaha of being such a violent town, but things like this happen in every town around the Country. I am a student at Creighton and I have lived in Omaha all my life, and I feel completely comfortable living here. There are just certain parts of town that one has to be careful in and it's too bad that there is an unstable part of town close to campus. People need to understand that this happens everywhere and a big deal doesn't have to be made out of it. My prayers go out to the family and the student who was shot. I just hope people don't look at incidents like these and judge Omaha.

Hey "Smart" person, college students don't keep 'normal' hours. When I was in college I was up til 2 am either working as a waitress or studying at the library. This young man wasn't doing anything wrong and this is yet another reminder how dangerous this city has gotten.

Hey "Smart Person" Eric was getting back from school because he was studying all night and was shot walking into his home. I got on this site to read about my friend and instead found the most ignorant person on earth! I hope if someone breaks into your house while you're sleeping and shoots you in the chest people don't insinuate you had it coming.

to Anon @ 12:10: WOW, 8:30 is "bright and early" to you?! Most people are already at work at 8:30...at 8:30 this morning, I myself had been up and at 'em for 2.5 hours...

Maybe Creighton needs to move to a better neighborhood.

"I was in bed sleeping like all the other "normal" people, that's why I wasn't shot." But you are up bright and early to post a message on this site. WOW your life is amazingly action packed!!!

It happened right a few yards from our apartment. We heard the shot, but did not think it was anything. Then when the police came, we knew something was not good. This neighborhood is full of Creighton students, we must be extra careful when walking around or going to our cars at night here.

I know this student, and i would just like to give my prayers to his family and his fellow brothers. Our thoughts are with you.

A fine city we have here. People getting robbed at gunpoint while walking instead of driving intoxicated. WE NEED STIFFER PENALTYS FOR GUN CRIMES!

How much money could a college student be carrying? Takes three thugs to get it, though.

I was in bed sleeping like all the other "normal" people, that's why I wasn't shot.

I cannot wait to get out of this violent town.
