A law enforcement officer shot and killed a man Sunday during a standoff in Blue Springs, 11 miles south of Beatrice in southeast Nebraska.

Authorities were called to a residence about 6 p.m. Saturday after a neighbor called to report a man armed with a handgun knocking on their door.

The man, who was not identified, was in the residence as negotiators spoke with him into the early morning hours. The man came out and fired shots shortly after 4 a.m. Officers returned fire and the man went back inside. He was found dead in the doorway about 7:15 a.m.

No one else was in the home during the standoff. Neither the officer nor the officer's law enforcement agency was identified.

The Gage County Emergency Response team responded to the call. It is made up of Beatrice Police and Gage County Sheriff's deputies. The Nebraska State Patrol has been asked to investigate the shooting. A grand jury also will investigate, as required by state law when a person dies while in contact with law enforcement.
