Omaha’s Open Door Mission is swamped. More people than ever are coming in for food at a time the pantry shelves are at an all-time low.

"Not only are we feeding hungry and homeless men, women and children, each day families living in their own homes are coming to us for meals to help supplement their income," said Open Door Mission President and CEO Candace Gregory. "We can't turn them away."

Gregory said the mission has seen a 46 percent increase in the number of people being served each day, that's approximately 1,500 meals. She says the food supply is dangerously low, citing a dip in individual and food drive donations.

"We are hoping that when the community hears about our need, they will respond. Whether it's a few non-perishable items or a food drive that results in a truck load, it will help."

Here is the list of the most need staples to help fill the pantry:

  • Canned vegetables and fruit

  • Instant mashed potatoes

  • Pasta and sauce

  • Canned soups and meats

  • Peanut butter and jelly

The mission is also short on plastic serving trays. "We run out of trays before everyone is served," says Gregory. "If there is a school or other organization that has extra serving trays, please call us at (402) 422-1111. We'll send someone out to pick them up."

With colder temperatures on the way and winter fast approaching, Gregory says thousands more will soon be in need of help. For more information click here.
