A Council Bluffs teenager remains hospitalized in critical, but stable condition after being shot in the back Wednesday night.
Sixteen-year-old Kdion Guytan was found lying in an alley near 33rd and Lincoln Boulevard in Omaha just before 7 p.m. A witness told Channel 6 News she heard several gunshots.
Police searched the neighborhood, but were unable to locate a suspect.
Those who live in the historic Bemis Park neighborhood consider it safe, surrounded by a few trouble zones.
Steve Morrison knew something was wrong when he came home from work. "They had the whole area, two or three houses taped off in crime tape including part of our back yard and their garage there, all the way back to the street."
It was too close to home for Romalis Ozuna, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 30 years. A lot of his family also lives in the area and Wednesday night his loved ones were close to being caught in the middle of the gunfire.
"My sister just having a baby was leaving my grandmother's house, walked down the alley where the shooting took place. They were a minute or two separating them walking down here and what could have been a possible homicide."
The shooting has changed the way many people feel about their neighborhood. Now they feel just as vulnerable as the neighborhoods that border them.
"It’s a wake up call, you're not safe no matter where you're at,” said Ozuna. “We just happen to be in the middle of a battle ground and yesterday was the eye-opener we needed. I personally am going to beef up security."
The Guytan family has requested that no information be released on their son.
