Former Nebraska football player Thunder Collins was arrested Wednesday on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and two felony weapons charges in the shootings that left one man dead and another injured.

Collins was taken into custody at an apartment complex near 81st and Blondo. Investigators believe he was involved in the shooting death of 28-year-old Timothy Thomas of California near 70th and Military on Tuesday.

Twenty-year-old Karnell Burton of Omaha was also booked on multiple charges including homicide, attempted murder and using a weapon in the commission of a felony.

Another victim, 26-year-old Marshall Turner also from California, was found critically wounded inside an SUV at 72nd and Grover. Police say the incidents are connected. Collins is charged with both shootings.

An arrest warrant has also been issued for 21-year-old Ahmad Johnson in connection with the shootings. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call police at 444-7867.

Prosecutors allege the gunfire was the result of a drug transaction that turned into a robbery.

Residents in the area of 70th and Military reported hearing multiple gunshots and what sounded like a car crash around noon on Tuesday. Two cars and an SUV were damaged and a second SUV took off. That vehicle ended up at the Baymont Inn at 72nd and Grover.

"When the SUV went by, he went by so fast I could see the look of terror on his face, to get the hell out of here,” said witness Susan Chinowith. “That's what he was trying to do as fast as he could."

After seeing his picture a day later, she's now coming forward saying the man she saw fleeing was Thunder Collins. "That's him. I know it's him. I think if Thunder Collins is going to be a man, he ought to man up to what he did yesterday and at least admit that he was that second car."

"I don't know who they're alleging is the shooter, I don't know what the evidence is at this point,” said Collins’ attorney James Martin Davis. “I know there was a fight and then shots rang out."

Davis says Turner identified his client as the shooter, but Davis says the investigation is just beginning. "There's no question we have crimes committed because someone is seriously injured and somebody is dead."

Davis says he expects that Collins will be in court Monday and will be held without bond.

The 29-year-old Collins played I-back for NU in 2000 and 2001. His time on the field was cut short by suspensions and problems with the law.

In 2001, Lincoln Police charged Collins with assaulting his girlfriend. In an agreement with prosecutors, the charges were dismissed, but later reinstated after Collins failed to follow through with the agreement.

Those who live at the apartment complex where Collins was taken into custody were surprised. "I'm moving out next week," said neighbor Chuck Gammel. "We just have to get into a better area."

Home on his lunch break, Gammel wasn't happy to hear about the latest happening at his apartment complex. "Just the area, the people, too many things have happened in the last year-and-a-half here."

That includes the murder of 25-year-old Antwain King last year in the parking lot and now the arrest of Collins. "Who knows that you're living right next to somebody like that, that's something you wouldn't think of."

Aren't all drug dealers in the wrong place at the wrong time?? Everytime we hear these stories, the media gets ahold of family members and friends, who constantly say what a "good" person they are and that they would NEVER hurt anyone. It is sickning to listen to, and read. These three are murderers. Was there a story on the dead person??

Posted by: Faye on Sep 27, 2008 at 04:41 PM
The sad thing here is I never once heard no one have sympathy for the young man who lost his life (Timothy Thomas), or is it his life dont matter because he sold drugs? My heart goes out to Timothy family.

Posted by: RM on Sep 26, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Why all the hype about him being an ex-husker why does that even matter. There are people in prison who attended school somewhere but that is usually not mentioned. Besides he wasnt that great anyway.

THANK YOU MISS SECERT FOR YOU COMMENTS. I AGREE WITH YOU 100%. I DON'T KNOW ANYONE INVOLVED BUT AHMAD. HE IS A GOOD MAN WHO IN MY OPINION WAS CAUGHT UP WITH SOMETHING HE DID NOT KNOW ABOUT UNTIL IT HAPPEN. SO ALL OF YOU SAINTS WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN CAUGHT OFF GUARD BY SOMEONE ELSE ACTIVITIES EXAMPLE: THE NEXT TIME SOMEONE CUTS YOU OFF IN TRAFFIC AND THEIR ACTIONS CAUSE YOU TO WRECK OR SWIRL. DON'T BLAME THEM ITS ALL ON YOUR HEAD

In reply to good RiddAnce 9/24/04 9:03pm. If u so called known all 4 suspects, u shoulda known that the 21 year old worked @ Roberts Diary sweetie so yeah he did have a 9-5 hell even over night, and over time so nah I don't believe all the cars where drug $$ cars or whatever it was u stated. Ahmad just made a bad decision by having all that over his parents house. And No he's not a drug dealer he doesn't know the 1st thing about a drug transaction. Innocent til Proven GUILTY!!!

Ok Irritated. Lets talk about the victim who died. This man dedicated his life to selling drugs. He didn't even have a job. He drove from California to sell drugs to Thunder Collins. That's dedication. Must have been quite a load. The whole thing stinks. Thugs killing thugs. I feel sorry for nobody. Even the person who died. Everyone involved should be locked away for life.

Another past Husker in trouble with the law, what a shocker. Good thing they don't do background checks, Nebraska wouldn't have a football team!

Posted by: llr on Sep 25, 2008 at 02:04 PM
Thank you, ME, I agree 1000%. His mother was even shown on TV in an old file tape that she wanted to get him out of South Central and Nebraska would be a nice quiet place for him to stay away from that lifestyle. Sadly, it MIGHT have been exactly that ten or 20 years ago, but not now. And ESPECIALLY not Omaha. Maybe he should have gone to UN-Kearney.

Posted by: Irritated on Sep 25, 2008 at 01:57 PM
Nobody cares are about Thunder Collins. What an embarassment for this to be all over the news. He was ineffective as an athlete and ineffective as a productive member of society. Why dont you talk about the victim who died?

Posted by: Lightning Rollins on Sep 25, 2008 at 01:24 PM
Thunder Collins, not a good football player or citizen.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 25, 2008 at 11:15 AM
Well...the Huskers wanted to get "back to tradition" - nothing screams "tradition" like another Husker law breaker in the news.

Posted by: Idiots on Sep 25, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Some of you people are so beyond stupid it's laughable. If he was still a Husker he probably wouldn't even be charged or arrested? Are you freakin kidding me? If he was not with the Huskers he may have gone down this path long ago. The university gave him the chance to get an education and make something of himself. When football didn't work out, it appears he went back to the thug lifestyle football couldn't rescure him from. It blows my mind these athletes that have these opportunities throw them away because they'd rather hang out with their old thug buddies. Look at how many NFL and NBA players still get mixed up with thugs from their old neighborhoods. And the more cops comments are clueless too. You could have 3000 cops and how would they have known that a drug deal was going to turn into a robbery murder at that house at that time. Get real.

Posted by: Stephanie on Sep 25, 2008 at 10:33 AM
This is for Good Riddance; It doesn't really matter what kind of cars he drove you sound like a Hater just because you can't get a job don't take your anger out on other people. It is clear that all four of these men were doing something that they weren't suppose to be doing but a life was lost lets remember that regardless of what was going on he has a mother a father a family.

Posted by: PH on Sep 25, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Why do you blame the leadership at Nebraska for the problems that Thunder Collins has had in his lifetime? Did you ever consider that his life as a young man in California was influenced by his surroundings THERE? Do you think the Nebraska leadership WANTS these guys to be thugs? Of course not. They want them to mean and tough ON THE FIELD, not elsewheres. Sometimes you can "lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink". Translate, a tough young man from California is not likely to change his ingrained attitude towards society, what is right or wrong, just because he has been recruited by Nebraska. I believe the coaches and staff want what is best for ALL of their players, but it doesn't always work out that way. If all the players had the mentality of "Being above the law", wouldn't they ALL be in trouble to one degree or another? There are a lot of guys on that team. They are not all THUGS. Give the NE program some credit for AT LEASE TRYING to be "wholesome".

Posted by: DHB on Sep 25, 2008 at 10:24 AM
I nearly puked when I heard Burton's sister on the news last night...fortunately we hadn't had supper yet. "I know him, this isn't like him, he didn't do it." What, you think we all just fell off the turnip truck last night??!! Give me an enormous BREAK.

Posted by: Reality on Sep 25, 2008 at 10:11 AM
He was a Husker for about a year. Calm down you jealous Husker haters. Plus, several years removed from him playing isn't exactly easy to blame the Univ of Neb for this too. A man lost his life, and you are more worried about bashing a football team? Yeah, you guys got some GREAT morals. Sickening.

Thanks to shady atty's such as James Martin Davis-(ironic that he is representing one more piece of work)the police are having a hard time keeping thugs off the street. So, the way I look at it is they are slowly but surely doing it themselves!

Posted by: To all on Sep 25, 2008 at 05:29 AM
Quit trying to tye this guy to Nebraska! He played for the Huskers for less than 2 years and was kicked off the team. Oh and by the way, he's from Compton California! BUNCH of MORONS!

Collins was handed the gift of a lifetime and he flubbed it up BIG time! Not everyone gets a chance to really make something of themselves and he just couldn't see it. He actually believed all the hype about himself and that he was some kind of God of football. I do not feel for him one bit. I wish someone would hand me some kind of gift to make me famous, but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon, but I'm also not gonna go out and shoot people or hurt people. Let him sit in prison for the rest of his life and let him stew over what could have been. What a loser with a capital L.

Interesting point about school's being put on "lock-down" - the school that I teach at is very near to where all of this activity occurred - why weren't the schools in the are put on "lock-down"?

I really hope none of these persons are picked for jury duty. What happen to innocent UNTIL proven guilty. None of you offering NASTY comments was there. Don't believe every thing that comes from media. Guess what the media was not at the scene when the shooting happen, all their information come second maybe third hand maybe futher on down the line. I have been called for jury duty in federal court, district court and county court and because of my experience from jury duty I don't believe everything that comes from t.v. or the newspaper

Good- you do that dogg. Maybe with all your experteez, you could help save a fatherless child from the "hassels" that "somehow effect those in North O only". It's pretty simple folks, turn the thuggs in and we other "people of color" would understand "your plight". Face it folks, the stats don't lie. No matta where you come from, crime be crime and victums be victums....choose life or status quo and live with it.

Posted by: Mark on Sep 24, 2008 at 11:16 PM
Did you hear? James Martin Davis is his attorney?!!! I knew it!! AND he's INNOCENT. No mention that the garb Thunder was wearing in the TV interview (to let everyone know he was alive )is the same exact color of a well known gang. Of course he's not in a gang, he's turning his life around.

Posted by: tc on Sep 24, 2008 at 11:07 PM
Oh, Thunder. You have JMD as your lawyer? You are so screwed.

Posted by: Good Riddance on Sep 24, 2008 at 09:03 PM
I knew all parties involved and none of them were up to no good...constantly. All the cars you seen taken on the news were drug money cars not 9-5 job cars, or maybe the 21 year old that owned all three of them could tell you what he does for a living. Thunder Colliins is a washed up husker that was trying to fit in, where he didnt belong. Employ more police? I am a young black minority that has applied and passed initial tests to be denied on several occasions, maybe if they had somebody that knew about half the stuff that transpires in this city maybe we could elminate that, I'll take my expertise else where.

Violence is everywhere. Death is a daily occurrence. People in Texas are struggling to survive with NOTHING and Omaha is whining about everything except taking a real stand. Without people coming together to make things happen to combat this, it is going to continue and instead of one a day, there will be several. Instead of a "dog issue" at City Hall, we should have a "gang issue" and round them up and get them out of Omaha ... there are too many good people here to let these gangs take over. We need someone who will take a stand to change things and people to back a leader who is willing to try. It won't be the Mayor. We need Chief Warren back. We need OPD. We need to run the gangs out. Why should we support their worthless cause? And worthless it is!!!

I cannot believe you are going to turn this into a race issue. if you read the story, it says that charges were dropped against Thunder for assaulting his girlfriend. Only reinstated after he failed to follow the agreement. There's a lot of things that "get dropped" for the players no matter what there race is. Give me a break!

Nobody here connected him to Nebraska Football but Channel 6. Otherwise he would be just another thug running drugs and shooting people! But since they mentioned it, he's just another product of Lincoln and the supposed "Wholesome Values" that the Huskers represent. What a joke, you’re golden as long as you are celebrity or play football for the Huskers, WHATEVER you do!

Posted by: Duh on Sep 24, 2008 at 07:38 PM
To Mac: let's see the average drunk doesn't pull a gun and shoot a cop because they are being stopped legally for a random check. The average thug shoots a cop because they are being stopped or being looked at for even being remotely associated with a crime. Until these thugs can get a grip on themselves, the violence will continue. As for what I'm doing to help? I'm staying the heck away, one less person around is one less person injured and/or dead.

No wait...don't tell me, they are good kids til they get to Nebraska, right....And come on girl...in the wrong place at the wrong time??? Don't be so naive...he was trying to make a quick buck & things got messed up. He thought because he was messing with a blind man it was going to be easy, now look. Instead of playing ball & being a millionaire, he's up the creek without a paddle. What a waste.

Posted by: Brandi on Sep 24, 2008 at 06:57 PM
When the story first broke I knew it was probably drug related because of the cars they showed being towed and the fact they were from California that says drugs right there sorry to stereotype but it's usually the only connection between Omaha and Cali.

Mac - you can't run a roadblock to check for unauthorized firearms because this is a free society. There is no such thing as an "authorized" firearm. The Bill of Rights (the same one that gives you the freedom to spout such nonsense in a public forum without the interference of the government) specifically recognizes the right to own and carry firearms. It doesn't recognize driving, being intoxicated, or driving while intoxicated as human rights.

Good old Thunder, making Nebraskans proud once again. Here's a tip - refuse to sign any recruit that doesn't have a perfectly-clean juvenile record, make them sign a release for their juvie rap sheet. That will keep fools like this from ever getting on the team in the first place.

Posted by: Husker RB's and Sept on Sep 24, 2008 at 05:38 PM
September is not a good month for Husker running backs. Scott Baldwin was shot in Sept of 92. Lawrence Phillips attacked Scott Frost and Phillips girlfriend in Sept of 95. And now in Sept of 08, Thunder Collins is charged with murder. Sept 08 was good for Andy Christensen. He was acquited of sexual assault, although he probably did something. Guess he's a white lineman, and the other 3 are black running backs.

Well there was just a shooting in La Vista and they never thought violence would invade their neighborhood. Can we find out why our young people are killing each other.Come on Omaha let's pull together take back our streets and help our angry young people.

Andy Christensen, Thunder Collins, & Maurice Purify are just products of the Husker leadership. The fact that these 3 are in the news all within 3-weeks of each other, just shows how common place the lawlessness is with the Huskers. I'm sure they have gotten away with crimes in the past BECAUSE they played or play football for the Huskers, plain and simple. It's really just a reflection on the leadership in Lincoln that let these men believe they are above the law! If this tradition continues soon there will a Husker Row in prison!

Thanks Mike, but it's not just African-Americans, it's the entire younger generation. It is a shame that these "kids" can't concentrate their efforts into making the community a better place for ALL and be "part of the solution instead of part of the problem"! There is no excuse...North O, South O, West O, or the 'burbs! Stop generalizing! Straighten up!!! The authorities know where the thugs are! Employ more Police & ENFORCE ALL our Laws!!! Go GET THEM! Protect AND SERVE!!! Stop just reacting! Get the gang-bangers, drug trafficers, and gun-toting hoods! Clean up our community! Build more prisons if you have to.

If the police can stop cars with a road block to check for DUI then why can't they set up a road block to check for unauthorized firearms. Oh yeah, the ACLU and comunity leaders would not stand for that!!!! We have made laws that won't allow an end to this gun play in N Omaha.

St Bernard at 65th military was put on lockdown. 70th military is not north omaha. It used to be considered west omaha years ago. But heaven forbid if you lived east of 72nd according to the Ralston and Elkhorn kids. I used to laugh at them as I grew up off 67th street between maple and military. And where he was picked up on Benson Garden Blvd is between Blondo and Maple off 78th street. Violence is everywhere. Why would his friends assume he was dead? Number one: I thought Thunder left the team originally to care for his younger brother. Number 2: Greg, I really can't recall ever lining up in the shotgun formation under Frank Solich. But nice try at humor, though. Regardless, this violence is getting closer and closer to our neighborhood all the time (in fact we already had a shooting back in '04).

Posted by: Amazed on Sep 24, 2008 at 02:31 PM
Here we go again making a big deal about where the shooting takes place and the battle of north vs the rest of omaha. look people. our kids are out here dying and instead of taking actions to stop it, we turn our shoulder and act like it didn't happen. I can't blame the parents for this one this time. I know Bubba's pops. He's a good guy and has always wanted nothing but the best for him. He used to show so much "life" when he'd talk about his son. But over the years, his joys went to frustrations and anguish. Unless this was an act of self defense for some crazy scenario, i feel that who ever pulled the trigger needs to be an example to the rest of these hoodlums by being executed.

I love how we blame crime on certain areas. But I do believe that crime/shootings have happened in millard, ralston and papillion/lavista lately! Why dont we not lay blame! And instead try to make a difference. I know there are programs out there for troubled teens. But these guys were not teens, they were adults. Something needs to be done! I bet the kids of these guys (if they have any and i pray they dont!!!) arent the next ones on the news or being put in a body bag! This is a shame that this is what OMAHA is coming! I hope for mine and my families sake that all this stops!!!! AND SOON!!! And to the family who lost a loved PLEASE DO NOT go and do what these guys did! I pray for you and your family! And for the family who has a loved 1 in the hospital I pray hes ok and will be ok!

Dang!!! If he was still on the team he would be acquitted or maybe never even go to trial.

New meaning to the "shotgun" formation Thunder used to run in.

He may have committed murder, but at least he didn't embarass the Husker name like those wrestler boys who posed for those gay websites.

I am tired of people saying things about North Omaha. This is happening everywhere. The point is people are dying every day and it is young people, instead of putting people down, and North Omaha down, think of a way to come together and make this a better place.

It just goes to show that you can give an under-privelaged person a chance to better himself and he will still become a product of his environment. He had the opportunity to leave this type of life behind, but obviously would rather live the life of a criminal. I have nothing against people who live in certain area of town. There are good and bad people in every neighborhood in Omaha, you usually only here about the bad ones.

FORMER HUSKER: Is this the only way to draw media attention to a tragedy? Attorneys in Omaha are licking their lips, money, publlicity. Disappointed on your focus.

Wasn't he on TV last night saying I was in the area earlier and I don't have anything to do with it, he was getting calles on his cell asking if he was shot? Is this the same individual that admitted on TV he's alive and wasn't involved?????

Maybe coach should just stop recruiting those LA thugged out boys. First Lawrence Phillips who has also been charged with attempted murder for running kids over with his car cause he was mad over a basketbal gmae. Now we have Thunder Collins who started out similar to Lawarence with several run-ins with police and now leading up to this murder charge. Next we'll be hearing about Maurice Purify who has made a name for himself over the last 2 years with his repeat disregard for the law as well. Just sad.....

Blame it on drugs not North Omaha. This is going to end up being a drug deal gone bad. The drugs were probably ment for west omaha folks...just wait and see.

Posted by: To "To Karma" on Sep 24, 2008 at 01:21 PM
Karma did not compare Omaha to Detroit. Karma stated that if this keeps up, then Omaha can be compared to Detroit. Karma is simply referring to the high level of violent crime for a city this size. Omaha may never be on the same level as Detroit for overall crimes, but the per capita level sure seems the same.

Posted by: Dave on Sep 24, 2008 at 01:08 PM
While it seems the vast majority of this type of crime happens in North Omaha, keep in mind that stupidity knows no boundaries. The gang-related shooting in Millard, for example. If you think your neighborhood, no matter where you live, is crime free, think again, my friends. It IS a city-wide problem.

I know this will ruffle some feathers, and I am an African-Americasn. But We can blame on the ignorance of that" generation"(not all but that generation in particular) of minorities who believe they are "owed" something or they are "justified" in taking anothers life.

I wondered what he was up to now....now I know.

Posted by: Vicki on Sep 24, 2008 at 12:56 PM
Are you kidding, the mayor (or any of the others with the power) are too busy thinking about the Kerry (bend over and kiss our rear ends)bridge to think or even worry about the violence, which as many of you believe is only in north omaha. Maybe if they started using the taxpayers monies for things that would actually make our lives safer, instead of things that they think makes them look good (ie.pedestrial bridge, new stadium) things could maybe better. And also, if they are going to use the tax payers money, don't you think we should have a vote that counts on it. Go Figure!!!!!

An ex-husker arrested! Who would have guessed. This moron was on TV yesterday saying that he received phone calls from people asking if he was dead and he wanted to let people know that he was alive. Now he is alive and in jail for murder. Seems as if his friends and aquaintances are aware of Thunders involvement with the criminal element.

Posted by: me on Sep 24, 2008 at 12:31 PM
I bet he'll be back on the field ready to play against Iowa State.....of wait he's no longer a husker! He'll get jail time!

Posted by: To karma on Sep 24, 2008 at 12:29 PM
The fact that you think the recent crimes have put us up with the likes of Detriot is frightening- please do your research. They aren't comparable at all. Yes, something does need to be done, but panic statements like this do not help. What are you doing to help? This is a community problem, and it will take a community to solve it.

Posted by: Bill on Sep 24, 2008 at 12:18 PM
Why can't we blame this on North O? 70th and Military? My geography was never that great but I am pretty sure this is in the northern section of Omaha. Just south of Ames I believe.

Posted by: Dan on Sep 24, 2008 at 12:17 PM
Actually you can blame this one on North Omaha. The address given for Thunder is right in North Omaha. So it is a product of North Omaha.

Posted by: Sid on Sep 24, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Such stupid young fools. I can't feel sorry for them, but I do feel sad about the situation and about what they have done to the neighbors.

I live in Benson and let this be a warning. I keep a loaded shotgun in my bedroom along with a loaded pistol and hunting rifle and ANYONE WHO BREAKS IN TO MY HOUSE.....DIES. Simple as that. Just try it you rotten gang thugs.

Posted by: Todd on Sep 23, 2008 at 06:16 PM
Omaha has to be the capital of shootings. If we had much stronger penaltys for these types of crimes I bet people would think twice about what they do with a gun... Too bad we have way too many lawyers for that thought to be a reality...

Posted by: karma on Sep 23, 2008 at 04:10 PM
Is the mayor even thinking about the recent string of crime? Has he thought of having a news conference and possibly adding police to the force to cover these problem areas??At least an aknowledgement would be nice.....anything really at this point!! It is evident that if we keep this up we will be right up ther with Detroit on crime.
