A disturbance involving dozens of people Friday night ended with shots fired as police arrived and an Omaha teenager wounded.

About 40-50 people ran from the scene at 29th and R Avenue around 11:20 p.m. where 16-year-old Reath Jiech was shot. Jiech was taken to Creighton Medical Center by private vehicle with injuries not considered life threatening.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to call police at 444-7867.

If you're a teen who knows everything and is ready to rule the world, consider this: for 60 years your elders have fought wars without escalating to nuclear weapons. You can't have a simple fist fight without escalating to knives or guns. Ready to lead the world? No!

Do 16 year old punks really have anything so important to them that they have to shoot someone over? What a pathetic society we live in these days. Where are the parents and why dont the kids these days have any sense of responsibility for their actions? Excuse me while I go and vomit....

Moreta, the interesting thing about when people take shooting victims to the hospital in private vehicles, is that they usually take them to the WRONG hospital. UNMC and Creighton are the trauma hospitals, meaning they are set up with surgical teams to handle major traumas like gun shot wounds. What these people don't know, is that only one of these hospitals is the designated trauma center at one time. UNMC is the trauma center on Tues., Fri. and Sun., Creighton on the other days. If, for example, you go to Creighton on a Friday (when it is NOT the designated trauma center), like this patient did, you will find that it is not set up and ready to take care of a major life threatening trauma pt. They may not have a surgical team ready on the off-trauma days. They will certainly do the best they can, but the proper thing to do is call 911, and have an ambulance treat and transport the patient to the proper trauma center of the day.

Actually Lori the reason they do that is because they think the cops will not find out..but the hospitals report all gunshot admittants..shows how ignorant thugs are.

They do not care about the cost of gas in their vehicle. It is most likely stolen gas anyway. Why would they care? It is no money out of these thugs pockets.

everytime i think it is one of mine.....HELP OMAHA to end this violence.....COMMUNITY IS THE KEY....REAL COMMUNITY!

Considering it cost $480 for the ambulance crew to take me 6 blocks from my home to the hospital last summer (covered by insurance) I can see why people take personal vehicles to the hospital. And they can get there quicker if they go straight away, instead of calling 911. Still, it destroys evidence, and can be life-threatening to the shooting victim. And no, "stop the violence", we don't need to repeal gun laws...every law-abiding citizen needs to get a permit AND a gun. What will stop the violence is when these thugs realize the entire populace is ARMED and won't put up with their B.S. "Shoot first, ask questions later" if you are being terrorized or home-invaded or assaulted, et al. I can guarantee you break into OUR home, you'll be staring straight down a .44. Outlaw guns, and then only the outlaws will HAVE guns.

I think its funny that somebody would blame this on gun laws. Do you honestly think a ghetto thug cares about gun laws, all gun laws achieve is the disarming of honest law biding citizens. Its funny to think that criminals listen to gun laws. It was probably another 16 year old kid who obtained the firearm illegally in the first place.

Omaha is really going down fast. Thats really sad that the citizens let this happen because Omaha is a beautiful city...get out there and vote people. Get loud and be heard.

Nice. Sounds like a jungle out there....

Reath was a former student at the school where I used to work. It's sad to hear this story. When is Omaha gonna try and take back their streets??? Repeal the gun laws that the city council passed, neighbors need to step up and report things to the police and you need to show the thugs who are out shootin everyone that this has to stop...

Yep, that's how OPD gets our criminals off the streets... when everybody runs away instead of telling what happened and getting them behind bars. Out of 40-50 people, not one stood up and said, "This is what happened..."

isn't it interesting how many of people wounded in shootings in Omaha take PRIVATE vechiles to the hospital--could it be to get rid of incriminating evidence NAWAH nothing like that would happen in that or any other part of Omaha. They just love to spend their own money on gas.
