Committee endorses naming span after Kerrey

A committee is recommending that the new walkway spanning the Missouri River be named The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in honor of the former Nebraska Governor and Senator.

The Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge Naming Committee was established by Council Bluffs Mayor Tom Hanafan and Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey. The recommendation from the panel was unanimous but still subject to final approval.

Kerrey secured $18 million in federal funding for the project.

In a memo to Mayor Hanafan and Mayor Fahey, the committee wrote, “Bob Kerrey’s outstanding record as a public servant and as a medal of honor winner were also considered by the committee, and, on their own, these contributions warrant naming this bridge in his honor. Still, it was his remarkable effort to obtain the majority of the necessary funding that made this selection the Committee’s clear, and unanimous, choice.”

The Council Bluffs City Council will vote on the name at their September 8 meeting, followed by the Omaha City Council’s vote at their September 9 meeting.

The bridge is expected to formally open in late September or early October. A bridge lighting ceremony is slated for September 13 at approximately 9 p.m. A fireworks show will follow.

It was just this past week now that my mother & I just returned from a trip to Omaha, visiting my brother & sister there. I was shocked to see that you had a pedestrian bridge there that looked exactly like the Pasco/Kennewick Cable Bridge here, we have in the Tri-Cities,(WA.). I wasn't able to get close to that bridge there, but from a distance, I wouldn't have been able to tell the two apart. i just had to get a couple snapshots of it to take home with me. Terry.

Can't believe they named it after a man, how shallow is that. I would of thought something fit for the area would of been more rememberable for the tourist community or just for the people who live here. What about "Two city gateway bridge" or something cool, lET'S GET REAL, would you remember joe shmoe bridge or the golden gate bridge? Can we go back and rename it or is it set in stone?

Posted by: Paula on Sep 10, 2008 at 07:47 PM
The bridge should be named after Johnny Carson. He was born in Iowa and lived there for 8 years until his family moved to Nebraska. That would be a great way to honor both states.

Posted by: MJM on Sep 9, 2008 at 10:37 AM
I love the bridge, it is graceful and lovely. What a great idea to span the river, to provide a lovely place to stand, to walk, to talk. A Bridge called Bob, as I believe it will be called.

Posted by: Jay on Sep 8, 2008 at 11:53 AM
A Pork Barrel Bridge named for a Pork Barrel politician. I guess that works...I would rather call it "my tax dollars wasted for something stupid" bridge.

Posted by: Susan on Sep 7, 2008 at 09:51 PM
I agree that the bridge should not be named after Bob Kerry. I'm comfortable about naming places after a person who is still living, unless they donated their money for the project. Instead of bashing the project, let's generate a list of viable names that will be good for tourism and the two cities it connects. How about: Standing Bear Bridge Mo River Bridge or O! Council Bridge Hey, bet you can all name the Arch in St. Louis. Can't we do as welling in naming our bridge, no matter what your feelings about it are?

Posted by: Jeff on Sep 7, 2008 at 09:20 PM
Taxpayer, as I've mentioned before, deficit spending is not tax money, yet. It all depends on what the definition of "is" is. President Clinton used the same game to "balance" the budget, by borrowing projected Social Security tax revenues and applying the projection to his budget. The money hadn't been collected yet, but he spent it anyway and claimed it wasn't a deficit. For decades, borrowed money was a deficit, but suddenly for Clinton, borrowed money was part of a "balanced" budget. The man has a way with words.

Posted by: Taxpayer on Sep 7, 2008 at 03:37 PM
Federal funds are still tax money. This bridge is worthless. There are more important things to spend money on. Polticians born with a silver spoon have no concept of the value of money. Why not improve the roads instead? Its gridlock in Millard. They should call it the Bend Over Bridge.

Posted by: Judy on Sep 7, 2008 at 03:26 PM
Whew! I never ceases to amaze me who we look up to and actually believe deserves this type of recognition. Please don't name this bridge anything to do with Bob Kerrey. This is not because I have anything against the man. Let's name this bridge for the function it performs....connecting two communities who have been divided for years and NOW have begun to work together.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 12:56 AM
They couldn't make it straight. They had to make it a crooked bridge. Oh well, I guess it's worthy of Bob Kerrey's name.

Posted by: Jeff on Sep 7, 2008 at 12:53 AM
Kevin, love your comment about energy. It's that old Washington strategy: to be a hero, you have to create a crisis.

Posted by: Kevin on Sep 6, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Name it after the former congressman who stopped nuclear energy expansion, who sat for years in Washington opposing drilling for oil ...a pedestrian bridge is a perfect tribute, build a few thousand more ...thanks to Bobs and His congressional buddies soon we'll all be walking .

Posted by: Kevin on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:53 PM
Pedestrian bridge should be classified as "The Fahey riverfront sculpture and back-up emergency second impeachment escape route.

Posted by: Savannah on Sep 6, 2008 at 03:48 PM
Geeazz! I bet the people who live day to day life and help people for free dont ever get a bridge or a steet even named after them! if this man is so important! plant a tree in his honor and give that bridge a name that we all will be proud of!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 6, 2008 at 01:46 PM
Hmmm...The Bob "I ditched Nebraska for the East Coast the first chance I got, now you can start walking there too" Kerry Pedestrian Bridge? Works for me.

Posted by: DB on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:41 AM
Looks like about 99.9 percent of Nebraskans don't like Bob Kerry and for many good reasons. I'm glad I've never voted for him. Keep up all of the posts and maybe they will change their minds about the name.

Posted by: What a waste on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:20 AM
How about naming it the "Suicide Bridge"

Posted by: Sherry on Sep 5, 2008 at 12:56 PM
I guess the name Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge is okay. But couldn't they think of a different name to connect the two cities together?

Posted by: Sandi on Sep 5, 2008 at 09:22 AM
Since the taxpayers paid for this bridge, maybe they should have say for the naming..Not some fancy smancy committee..Oh that is right nobody with money listens to the average person..Welcome to Nebraska.

Posted by: M on Sep 5, 2008 at 09:16 AM
Has Council Bluffs built that parking lot yet?

Posted by: Ernie on Sep 4, 2008 at 08:22 PM
It should be called the Heisman bridge

Posted by: OmahaDad on Sep 4, 2008 at 08:04 PM
I'm for naming it for Livingston Wills; he was the example we need to remember of a honorable Nebraskan not some New York millionaire who left the state and never looked back.

Posted by: Bob on Sep 4, 2008 at 05:25 PM
A bridge to nowhere at the taxpayers expense.

Posted by: moreta on Sep 4, 2008 at 02:43 PM
how about the people who are going to the events in the spring summer and fall? We walk a lot over here in CB. But also we aren't the city that is in the news daily for shooting after shooting after shooting. It's the typical omahan snobbery raising it's ugly head.

Posted by: Curious on Sep 4, 2008 at 01:30 PM
The Bridge to No Where. Well that seems a little mean to call CB no where, I mean, yeah it is not a great place but it is somewhere. Somewhere you can go to gamble or get drugs or cheap gas.

Posted by: Nancy on Sep 4, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Call it the "Broom Dude Bridge"

Posted by: judi on Sep 4, 2008 at 10:24 AM
I suggest naming it after CB School board member Janine Headen for her dedication and persistence. She ran for 13-15 years until she finally received enough votes to be a member of the board.

Posted by: B on Sep 4, 2008 at 09:39 AM
Are you kidding me! Yea, lets name it for a tax & spend liberal and a senator who was resposible for taking our freedoms away at one time. Why not name it for what Kerry did? Gun & Money grabbers bridge! While I respect his military service, he was a poor senator!

Posted by: Cindy on Sep 4, 2008 at 06:41 AM
I think the bridge should be named after the broom man, because he walked all over our city for most of him entire life and this bridge is about walking and connecting with people and this is what the broom man did.

Posted by: Maurice on Sep 4, 2008 at 06:30 AM
Why doesn't the naming committee not only name it for Bob Kerry but also Babe Gomez and all the other Congressional Medal of Honor winners in Nebraska, Iowa and the country. How about the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial Bridge.

Posted by: Jeff on Sep 4, 2008 at 01:15 AM
To Jerry & Oscar, I'm sure the wise guy calling himself "anonymous" meant that the bridge was funded by deficit spending, not tax payer dollars. The bridge is an ode to our credit card lifestyle, so I recommend naming it something like "Discover Bridge" or "Visa Bridge" (you know, it's a pun, like a passport to cross the river) or even "First National Bank Bridge".

Posted by: Carrie on Sep 4, 2008 at 01:02 AM
Dear Bridging, it's true, I won't fear traffic when I walk across the bridge. However, I will be afraid of being hit by a car while getting to the bridge. I guess I'll have to drive to use the footbridge.

Posted by: Fred on Sep 3, 2008 at 11:33 PM
A note to a posting by Bob. Don't insult the Broom Man. By the way,Bob, his name is Rev. Livingston Wills.

Posted by: Lori on Sep 3, 2008 at 09:56 PM
HOW can Iowa approve naming this bridge for Bob Kerry? Didn't their senator have a hand in it, too? My husband says it should be named "Bob" because hopefully that's what all the jumpers will do when they hit the water...

Posted by: Elizabeth on Sep 3, 2008 at 09:51 PM
Thanks for all the funny posts! To moreta: how many people do you really think will be parking in Iowa to walk to the Quest Center during any of the freezing cold winter months, let alone the nice months? Walk...that far? (Have you seen the overwieght population that lives around here? Yes, in Iowa, too!) I'm sure it'll be hundreds! Ha ha ha. To anyone who thinks the cost is over...think again. There is always upkeep to every bridge...unless we could set up an "adopt a bridge" group like the "adopt a highway" ones. I think the entire thing is a waste, too, but I'm glad the money is not being put into more give-outs for the "homeless" and "poor". Most of whom CHOOSE the life they have.

Posted by: Oscar on Sep 3, 2008 at 08:39 PM
Anonymous Sept 3 @343pm--read the middle paragraph about $18 million in Federal funding secured by Bob Kerrey. The taxpayers paid for this. We, the taxpayers, DID pay for this damn white elephant.

Posted by: LeShawn on Sep 3, 2008 at 07:56 PM
They should have named it Cornhusker-Hawkeye Walk.

Posted by: moreta on Sep 3, 2008 at 06:32 PM
ah more jealously from that fine city across the river You know the one where there are daily shootings, the mayor runs roughshod over the public and potholes are bigger than elephants. There is a park with things to do at the end of the bridge, access to bike paths and general access for people who would rather park where there isn't a high fee and walk across the bridge to qwest. Of course some of the people will also be walking to the casinos which further infuriates the west bank. what a hoot.

Posted by: Keith on Sep 3, 2008 at 06:29 PM
How about the WeTiNgho Bridge! (WE-lcome T-o I-owa N-ow G-o Ho-me) or The Lewis and Clark Jumping Bridge.

Posted by: Paul on Sep 3, 2008 at 06:14 PM
So Bob "Hollywood" Kerry scams taxpayers into paying for a white elephant, then gets honored for it. Way to go, Omaha -- that's typical. It's surprising CB would go along with it -- they usually have more sense. Must be a casino involved.

Posted by: DB on Sep 3, 2008 at 05:40 PM
Come to think about it. The Bob Kerry bridge would be good. It represents him well. It is the shape of his head to. How about the bridge that the residents of Omaha didn't get to vote on. I don't think anyone in this State cares for him. Pork Barrel Kerry Bridge hmm that has a ring to it to.

Posted by: Don on Sep 3, 2008 at 05:33 PM
Why... I still think the Broom man is a better canidate with a statue of him, but I think the symbal of work ethic of Omaha people

Posted by: Tim M on Sep 3, 2008 at 05:21 PM
You know. I don't give a damn where the money came from. If it came from the local taxpayers, a special grant, the federal government or a big bonus check from the tooth fairy...I really don't care. The fact that our government thinks the best way to spend this extra $18 Million Dollars on a useless footbridge just astounds me. I know of a lot of charities who could help a lot of people and do a lot of good work with $18 Million Dollars. Instead...We get a ridiculous footbridge over the Missouri River. Whoopdie Doo!

Posted by: Bob on Sep 3, 2008 at 05:21 PM
The should call it "waste of money bridge".

Posted by: Tim on Sep 3, 2008 at 05:06 PM
Name it after Bob Kerrey? What a waste! Of course, the bridge was a gift to Bob Kerey by the then US Senate. What a joke. NObody wants it! Nobody will use it! who will clean the ice and snow off in January or February? Who will pay that?????????????

Posted by: Jerry on Sep 3, 2008 at 04:55 PM
Ok, "anonymous" (the nameless one who exasperatingly insists that we taxpayers did not pay for the bridge)... just where do you think the money came from? The Free Money Tree? Did it fall from the sky? Because if you'll take the time to learn even a smidgen about how government financing works, you might actually learn that every penny of "federal funding" does indeed come from -- yep: taxpayers. And the federal funding only paid for part of that monstrous white elephant -- the rest of of the funds came from state and local government coffers -- which are also filled from taxpayers' pockets -- and a small percentage was paid for by private donations (from the casinos and possibly some folks who surely could have thought of better causes to which to donate their money, but that is their problem). So, dear "anonymous" -- perhaps you should reexamine the thickness of your own skull.

Posted by: S on Sep 3, 2008 at 04:54 PM
Bob is a great name since thats what I am going to have to do for my new part time job to pay the taxes on this wonderful walkway!

Posted by: CJ on Sep 3, 2008 at 04:42 PM
Well, just goes to show - - the people don't matter!!! I agree, why even name it? I live in Bellevue, so I know I won't ever use it and you are correct, who is patrolling the bridge?

Posted by: Julie on Sep 3, 2008 at 04:19 PM
Since when is the bridge all about Nebraska, It does connect between 2 states no just 1 state. What does Bob Kerry have to do with the State of Iowa?? The bridge should a mutual name. I will agree however that the bridge is a waste of taxpayer money on both sides of the river.

Posted by: dave on Sep 3, 2008 at 04:04 PM
Lets name it the bum shuttle bridge, now the homeless will have a good walking path to the bum camp ground in the weeds of council bluffs.

Posted by: Bill on Sep 3, 2008 at 04:01 PM
What a waste of money. Call it the bridge to nowhere.

Posted by: Joe on Sep 3, 2008 at 04:00 PM
WOW - All of you whiners need to give it a break already. I sure hope you are not really this bitter, you would have a much happier life. You may not appreciate the bridge but many people do. I can not wait for it to open so I can use the bike paths in both NE and IA. You should also know this money was earmarked for community betterment and it was going to be spent for that purpose. It could have gone to another community and your taxes would still be going up. Get over it and offer constructive opinions or just go away. I do think a name representing both communities would be much better than the "Bob" though.

Posted by: Laughable on Sep 3, 2008 at 03:54 PM
I like all the previous "bridge name" selections.... "flat broke" bridge, "bridge to no-where", etc. They are all perfect. How about this idea, the Mayor can "load" another committee with his fans (there are 3 or 4 left in town) and they can be PAID with tax dollars to come up with something for that entire area like...um, I dont know: "Wasted Taxpayer Funds Bridge, just a few steps from, Fahey's Folly Baseball Stadium".

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 3, 2008 at 03:43 PM
Sigh...we as tax payers, did NOT pay for this bridge!!! When are you people going to get that through your thick heads? But I guess that would take away something for you to complain about, and we can't have that.

Posted by: Iago on Sep 3, 2008 at 03:24 PM
How about the Pratt and Wilson memorial Bridge? or Livingston Wills Memorial Bridge. I do not think it is right to name major public structures after the living.

Posted by: Bob on Sep 3, 2008 at 03:21 PM
Naming the bridge Bob Kerrey!? Are you kidding me? After thinking about it, it seems like the bridge and Bob are a good match. Both not good for much of anything.

Posted by: Eugene Hook on Sep 3, 2008 at 03:19 PM
A better name for the foot bridge would be Fahey's Folly"

Posted by: Joe on Sep 3, 2008 at 03:19 PM
BOB, what on earth did he do for Nebraska besides raise the taxes and blow the money. NOTHING. NOTHING. NOTHING.

Posted by: Olivia on Sep 3, 2008 at 03:13 PM
The Bob Kerrey Comemmorative Bridge to Nowhere. That's Bob. What a loser.

Posted by: MB on Sep 3, 2008 at 02:44 PM
How about suicide bridge?

Posted by: B on Sep 3, 2008 at 02:34 PM
How about a more nationally recognized name? If we are going to waste that much money on it we can at least give it a MEMORABLE name.

Posted by: Dan on Sep 3, 2008 at 02:24 PM
No matter what you call it, it is a waste of money.Who will actually walk across it in 1 year when the newness has warn off. I expect an overtime police officer(s) will be placed there so noone gets robbed before they get on the casino bus and to stop grafitti.

Posted by: Biff on Sep 3, 2008 at 02:06 PM
No, Jarbeau - Mr. Wills deserves something better to be named after him. I'm fine with naming this joke of a project after a joke of a politician. It's very fitting.

Posted by: d on Sep 3, 2008 at 02:03 PM
They can call it anything they like. It will always be Fahey's Folly as far as I'm concerned. The money should have gone to help care for the homeless here in Omaha.

Posted by: justme on Sep 3, 2008 at 02:01 PM
We could name the bridge Fahey's Folly, but I think they are saving that name for the new stadium.

Posted by: TNHusker on Sep 3, 2008 at 01:45 PM
Bob? Are you serious? I'm glad I don't live there anymore. Now I don't have to worry about Bob spending my taxpayer dollars on a bridge to nowhere.

Posted by: Bridging on Sep 3, 2008 at 01:42 PM
I am guessing most if not all of the posts below are left by people who either travel between the two cities by car or don't go across at all. It is about time there is a safe way to travel from Iowa to nebraska with out fear of getting hit by a car. Both cities will need to do what they can to make sure crime is not a normal thing so instead of dogging the naming, put efforts to use by pressuring proper security for this.

Posted by: Citizen on Sep 3, 2008 at 01:40 PM
Well, Kerrey was a joke as a Gov. and even bigger joke as a senator and the bridge is the biggest joke, so, why not.

Posted by: anonymous on Sep 3, 2008 at 01:36 PM
I like "jumpers paradise" myself

Posted by: Terry on Sep 3, 2008 at 01:15 PM
There are so many more appropriate historic events between Omaha and the Bluffs, why name the bridge for a pork barrel senator.

Posted by: GMC on Sep 3, 2008 at 01:08 PM
I'm for "The Bridge to Nowhere". Maybe they can charge a toll to make up for the taxes.

Posted by: Emily on Sep 3, 2008 at 01:05 PM
How is a bridge a crime magnet? Are people going to steal the bridge? I don't get it...

Posted by: Bill on Sep 3, 2008 at 01:04 PM
I guess all the good names of prominent Nebraskans and Iowans (Fontenelle, Standing Bear, Cunningham, Babe-Gomez, Offutt, Dodge, Bemis, etc.) were taken already for other projects. How about the Lewis and Clark Bridge? How about the hyphenated names of the first Council Bluffs and Omaha soldiers killed in Iraq? There are better historical pioneers, heroes and war dead who deserve the honor more than Senator Kerry. Make the name mean something other than a tribute to a politician; even one who secured an $18M earmark for the project.

Posted by: Terry on Sep 3, 2008 at 12:58 PM
The Bob Kerry bridge, now the Republicans won't want to cross it. How about the Mike Johanns Bridge, na then the Democrats won't cross it. What am I saying nobody is going to use this thing anyway :(

Posted by: Jarbeau on Sep 3, 2008 at 12:15 PM
I think the idea to name it after "The Broom Man" was a much more fitting name. Mr. Wills was an Omaha icon.

Posted by: ray on Sep 3, 2008 at 12:07 PM
How about we call it the flat broke bridge. Its for all the nebraskans coming back from the casino broke.

Posted by: t on Sep 3, 2008 at 12:02 PM
The Bob? Great. Name it for the politician responsible for spending our tax dollars on the bridge to no where.

Posted by: Buckley on Sep 3, 2008 at 11:59 AM
Please !!!!! NO Not Bob

Posted by: stockbroker on Sep 3, 2008 at 11:30 AM
This bridge is nothing but a waist of money. It leads to no where. It will be a crime magnet and it costs a fortune. Therefore, I believe it would be appropriate to name it after Bob Kerry.

Posted by: RC on Sep 3, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Oh Please! Do we really have to Name the bridge? It is such a joke already, what a waste of taxpayor money...AGAIN. Thanks Bob.

Posted by: Mike on Sep 3, 2008 at 11:17 AM
How about "the bridge to no where" - give me a break - he secured funding of $18 million dollars we as taxpayers had to foot - let's quit spending money on this stuff

Posted by: ricochet000 on Sep 3, 2008 at 11:15 AM
What a stupid name...
