Friday night fever spread across the metro with a full slate of high school football games kicking off the 2008 season. It's a tradition athletes, coaches, their families and fans look forward to every year.
The dawn of a new season had all the familiar sights and sounds with painted chests, cheerleaders and mascots. "It's just a fun time," said Benson curriculum specialist Lisa Helmick.
As the Benson Bunnies took the field, a good part of the school's staff was staying late, but they didn’t mind one bit. "They love to support what the kids are doing and we really like to see the kids excel no matter what they're doing," said Helmick.
It was a show of support that goes well beyond the classroom. "Go Bunnies!"
While on the visiting side, Aimee Limongi's had her eye on her husband Paul, Burke's head coach. "We know that he's busy, got lots of meetings during the week and helping the boys do what they can to win games Friday nights. We're here to support him tonight, but we're here all year long to support him."
Paul's been the coach for three years and as you'd suspect, his wife also has the football bug. "Born and raised in Nebraska, you grow up with Nebraska football and you are a fan of football," said Aimee.
Their girls, Cece and Sophie, caught the fever at an early age. "They like to give support to their dad also and cheer him on." And they had the outfits to do it. "Come on everybody, let's cheer, the Bulldogs are here!"
The Burke Bulldogs beat host Benson 41-0.
