Newest jobless numbers show Nebraska continues to have the second lowest unemployment rate in the entire country. The jobless number for July 2008 is pegged at 3.4% in Nebraska. Only South Dakota has a lower rate at 3%.
Still, the July 2008 number is three-tenths of a percent higher than the jobless rate in July one year ago. Nationally, the jobless rate stands at 5.7%, a full percent higher than it was one year ago. While the national number reflects a softening economy, Nebraska's Labor Commissioner says the state's economy remains strong. While the jobless rate in Nebraska has edged up slightly there are actually more jobs now in the state than one year ago.
