Apparent Scam Nets Thousands Save Email Print
Caller claimed to be grandson

An 87-year-old Lincoln woman is out nearly $18,000 after a man led her to believe he was her grandson and needed money.

Police say the unidentified woman received a phone call Monday from a man claiming to be her grandson. He said he had gotten into an accident while vacationing in Canada.

She didn't question it because he knew her grandson's name and other information. She didn't recognize his voice but believed a bad connection was to blame.

She wired him nearly $18,000 and was trying to send more when her bank told her she may be the victim of a scam. She later called her family and learned her grandson had been in Omaha the whole time.

My grandma has over a dozen grandchildren and is a little hard of hearing. Do you think she can recognize everyone's voice? Don't be so hard on this poor lady.

Maybe it's time to think about getting some financial help and someone to watch over this lady's funds. I agree with RM and Old Stor...at some point they've got to learn.

Wow if only the scammer would put his time and efforts researching that information and family connection to good instead of evil!

Yeah. 18 large? I would have called my family. At least to make them aware of what was going on, before I sent that kind of money. Silly lady!

Ummm to you too. The lady is 87 years old, and she was worried about her grandson. Common sense would tell most people she would react immediately to that situation. That's why the elderly are often tagets of scams like these. A few people obviously don't have common sense, hence my reply to you. Hope they catch the slime, I'm sure they will.

It doesn't seem to matter how many redundant stories that local TV stations and newspapers run about scams like these. It doesn't matter how may time Neighborhood Watch tries to educate people about these scams. Someone, probably someone whose family is trying to deny clear signs of the onset of senile dementia in an older relative, will fall for one every now and then.

Scamming the elderly hope hell has a special place for him. At that age some people start losing some of there common sense.

Wouldn't it make sense to call your family first before wiring that much money to someone you don't know? I feel sorry for her, but let's use a little common sense.
