Some residents in Fremont are moving ahead with a plan for a special election on a proposal targeting illegal immigrants.

Residents have gotten approval from City Clerk Kim Volk to circulate a petition to force a special election on a proposal to prohibit the harboring of, including renting to, and hiring illegal immigrants.

City Attorney Dean Skokan says the petition is similar to a proposed ordinance that failed to win City Council approval last month.

Petition organizers had to get approval from the city clerk before circulating the petition.

People... these third world "people" who are moving into these old peaceful small towns are disrupting normal small town living. Cars in the yards up on blocks, illegal status people doing what it takes to survive like in their home country, not caring for their surroundings, increased police presence due to drinking, lewd conduct,theft, robbery etc.. this is not how small town America is or ever has been, thats why its lasted for so many generations. And it will not be accepted. Lets get rid of these meat packing plants in rural America and get back to true American values and small town living as it should be. Theae people are changing american way of life and its needs to stop now.Many of you may say this is racism but it is not! These are the facts.Everyone think about it, whats our world going to be in 15 years from now? Lets help them in their own country. Not ALL are like this but MOST ARE.

@Jose: Hey, it's "Colombia". All: This petition is a waste of time, as the courts will strike it down. As I've posted before, in California they have people with clean credit checks get rentals, then turn around and sublet for a fee. That's what will happen here. BTW, I asked a roofing company who was bidding on a project for my mother's house if all his workers were legal. Never heard from the guy again. Wonder what would happen if we ALL did that . . . Would we never get our roofs fixed, or prices skyrocket as we suddenly saw a drop in unemployment for Americans as they all became roofers? Just food for thought.

The Mexican army shoots illegals that cross their Southern border. And yes by far the vast majority of illegals are Mexican. That's not a racist statement, it's just a fact. Last September Mexico's President Calderon demanded the U.S. surrender her sovereignty. The Mexican government has admitted to instructing citizens wishing to leave Mexico how to cross the U.S. border, how and where to sign up for welfare, and even used the Mexican army to hand out maps and survival kits for the trip. So stopping illegal immigrataion especially from Mexico is a matter of national security, much more than anything that is happening in the Middle East.

To Jose...Viva La Mexico? Well if Mexico is so great, how about going back there? I am appalled that so many illegals come here because they say they want a better life. Ok, why then are they saying things like Jose is, waving and putting out Mexican flags. Not very American if you ask me. I do not see any other nationalities waving their flags. They are so glad to be here, doing things the right way, learning English and becoming American citizens. My ancestors were not from this country but when they came here, they did not wave around the flag from Russia. They learned English, became citizens,got jobs and got NOTHING free.

Foreigners are welcome as long as they do the proper thing and become citizens. Illegals need to go back where they came from. They don't pay taxes and don't obey the law. The first step is to go after the employers that hire them.

they did try guess what nothing happened so they are trying to force the issue. If it starts at the local level then maybe the state will pay attention and if the state pays attention then maybe the feds will. Just a question--why should the children of an illegal get a school break for college when my legal american born child gets turned down because funds aren't available. I make $500 too much to qualify for help, medically or financially but illegals get lots of help. By the way has anyone read what the rules are for being a foreigner wanting to live in Mexico. Read them then compare with what we do here.

One more thing to Give Me a Break- You stated that most of them do pay taxes and you wonder where that money goes at the end of the year?! Well, let me tell you. All of these taxes that they supposedly pay should qualify them for some sort of a tax refund if they were here legally. And I agree with another poster, Give me a break is either here in this country illegally or is trying to help someone who is. And to be honest, they are here illegally so I and most of the people here have no sympathy for any of them. And as far as the children that they create while they are here stealing from the rest of us, too bad. If people are here illegally and then produce children, the children should not have legal status. And if and when the people are caught, the children go right back to the country with their parents. We have to work for everything we have and follow the laws of OUR country. Get it OUR country, not VIVA LA MEXICO!!!

What I really don't understand is why on the original proposal people were saying how incredible rediculous it was to have to pay a whopping $5 to register to rent to purchase a home/ apartment. Seriously, make the $5 refundable for all I care. As long as I don't have illegals living in my country and have my hard earned tax money paying for their free services. I pay for illegal immigrant's schooling and hospital bills when they visit the emergency room with no insurance and what do I get for being a legal tax paying American citizen. Oh! that's right... higher taxes and insurance costs. If every city instituted some kind of check like this we might not be spending millions building the giant and wonderfully ineffective 'Border Fence.'

The Nebraska Legislature voted down a bill dealing with illegal immigration. If you want to do something about it, contact your representative and let him or her know how you feel. We need to criminalize the hiring of, and leasing to, illegal immigrants.

Jose- If you are not here legally, please don't post and this is the United States of America, not Viva La Mexico. The problem is people being in our country illegally. That is fine if you want to come here and get a better life, but you need to go through the proper channels. Illegal is illegal and this country owes illegal aliens nothing. I am so sick of walking into a store and hearing all of that jabber, and driving down a street and seeing them in their big fancy American cars. The illegals come here, they are given a free ride, allowed to drive without a license and or insurance. Everyone just looks the other way and it keeps getting worse. To get a clue and give me a break, YOU GET A CLUE AND GIVE ME A BREAK! WE have to follow the laws,then so do they. If they want to be here, do it the right way or get out. And to Fremont, way to go! Adding more laws to the books is not the answer. Enforcing the laws already on the books is the answer. Why don't you guys up in Freemont try that approach first.

Good luck to Fremont. This is a worthy effort to save your city. My father came here many years ago from Denmark, through Ellis Island, and worked hard. At that time, it was legal to help settle the country. We're full now, and can't absorb any more. Overpopulation is becoming a real menace, and with the environment such an important issue, the country cannot provide water and food indefinitely for increased numbers of people. Omaha is a sanctuary city, so perhaps the illegals will come here to flood our schools. Cultural issues can eventually be ironed out, but I sure don't want to have to pay for these folks who continue to procreate and cost me in taxes for schools, hospital visits, law enforcement, etc.

I agree with all the posters about people coming into this country illegally. Everything is handed to these people on a silver platter. They get false driver's licenses, stolen SS #, free medicaid, welfare, etc. Some do not pay taxes so their takehome pay is such that alot of them can afford brand new vehicles, etc. They are breaking the laws by coming into the U.S. illegally and if the rest of us have to abide by the laws of this country, so should they. My grandparents came here from Russia many years ago and they did it the right way PLUS they learned to speak English. I am tired of the bleeding hearts saying that they are here for a better life. Oh really..they come here and send alot of their money back to Mexico to their relatives. It is hard to feel sorry for their children that are born here. The parents put them in the position they are in and did not think about them when coming here illegally.

This is a waste of time. As it is written today, this won't stand. There is a line of people and entities ready to sue the moment it hits the books if it does. And if so, more tax dollars will be needlessly wasted on legal fees defending a losing battle. What is the sense of that? This is a federal issue and the only way it can truely be solved is by the feds.

Mexico is a country that has been drug down into the toilet and I for one hope that they don't bring ours down too...I don't want illegals from anywhere in our country, but most here are poorly educated Mexicans & why on earth would we want to allow them to stay & import a new lower class? I think Nebraska should QUIT giving the Illegals (of all backgrounds) free school, healthcare,& all of the other "benefits" including in state college tuition. They aren't supposed to be here...why should we bend over backwards to help them & meet their needs when we aren't meeting the needs of OUR citizens first. My niece went to school w/ a boy in 3rd grade who spoke NO English & the teacher didn't speak Spanish...how did that NOT affect the 22 other students who were entitled to an education not one hindered by someone who doesn't know the language of OUR country. I would deport them all. We may have to pay more for a few things at first, but it wouldn't take long for us to save BILLIONS because we were no longer educating & taking care of millions in the healthcare arena for FREE. Adios... Nebraska should take a page out of the book of the Sherriff of Phoenix. The illegals there are fleeing like roaches.

I am raising a daughter; working full time in a hospital pharmacy and part-time in a big retail store. I have insurance for my daughter and me through my hospital job. I am a US citizen born right here in SW Iowa along with the rest of my family. Why is it that illegal immigrants get free health care; food stamps; free housing and everything else free? I work my tailend off and still barely make ends meet. I am lucky though. I don't have to go through all the business of becoming legal and I do love working right I wouldn't want to be an illegal immigrant at all. I love being an Iowa American hahaha!! Well, if the United States would stop catering to the illegals then I would have a better chance at enjoying a 401K later down the road. All the US needs to is stop giving them everything for free. Make them work for it and earn it.

This is the most heartless string of comments I have read in a long time. Fine, there a lot of hispanic illegal immigrants and those are the individuals and families Fremont residents are targeting. They're not thinking of illegal immigrants and people who have overstayed their student or travel visas. I can think of a whole lot of other people in this country who are not here illegally who receive FREE everything from our government. I have a bigger problem with welfare recipients and people who don't pay their medical bills or even bother to get a JOB than I do with illegal immigrants and their families. The final issue I want to address is the children of illegal immigrants who are now US citizens. What about them? They are better off here, since they're citizens, with their families. There is NO reason to not create an avenue other than deportation and arrest for people living in this country.

I work in a VA hospital and I would like to know why all of our signs there are now bilingual. Isn't there a law that says if you are going to serve in the US military, you HAVE to speak English? Thankfully they have taken down the billboard at 48th & NW Radial that was a recruiting poster for the US Navy and it was all in SPANISH. And to "Jose"...my ancestors came over from Germany about 150 years ago and they did it LEGALLY...Ellis Island and the whole nine yards. AND they learned English and got jobs. They may have spoken German in the home but on the street and in the workplace and marketplace, they spoke English. And they ASSIMILATED. Four generations later, you wouldn't know I was German except by my name. And I DO not call myself a German-American, I am an AMERICAN. As were my ancestors, who came here LEGALLY. And to "Embarassed", there are county hospitals to care for the indigent. That's what we pay taxes for.

I am a Fremont Native and am ashamed at the current situation. I work in a very large hospital in Omaha, and have interaction with all races and ethnicities. I believe that you need to become a citizen before being allowed to live in this country. However, the reasons that people have used in favor of this petition are ludacris. When hispanic people come through our ED, they usually pay cash when they leave and are usually sick when they are seen. I see many other people that are citizens checking in their 3 children with a cough because they can, we pay for it. Also its unfortunate that we complain about people that work harder for less money. One comment was, "a fair wage" is all Americans want. How about a fair days work. Why do we deserve more money? If you want to work, you will. Get a job and quit crying about the money. Let's focus on our horrific welfare system that allows people to have several kids and not work. That's what makes me ill, that's who is robbing us.

Look, those who came here illegally have no American rights-period. I'm not racist, but there is a BIG difference in coming to America legally and just walking in without permission! I can't go to your country and walk in unannounced, can I? I'm sorry their government is so messed up, but how is that America's fault? And I know plenty of young kids who would do the same jobs as the illegals. They just want a fair wage for a good day's work. The backlash has begun. I hope they have luck with this!!.4 yrs ago I was rear ended by an "Illegal" immigrant. Lucklily there were witness' standing by so he wouldn't take off.Long story short-no insurance,3 allias'fled omaha before his court date,didn't pay his tickets.So who paid here MEEEEE. My insurance went up because... because-they don't want to cover the loss!!No insurance company wants too.So all of us hard working AMERICAN citizens who have real ins. and real tags on our cars have to pay for the worthless ones who come up here to take advantage of our system and on top of it all,WON'T learn the ENGLISH language.If you want to be an American Citizen-learn english,do what it takes to become a real citizen,pay your taxs,get REAL insurance and stop saying NO COMPRENDE ENGLES when someone says something to you you don't want to answer.There are many of us who speak and understand what your saying in "Spanish"-were not all blind to your games!!!Enough said

We have all the resources to help other countries. If we could just help Mexico's economy a little we wouldn't have such a problem according to some. The majority of illegal immigrants would stay in there own country the people there are more friendly everyone of us need a reality check and be in their shoes for a week the lifestyle there is harder and we are by far lazy compared to them. Majority of them just want more for their family just like anyone of us. They do pay taxes out of their paychecks they just never get any money back like most of us when we file taxes. Was I the only one that heard of all the unclaimed dollars because they don't receive a tax return?

This is just like adding more gun laws. It does absolutely no good. Laws only work on law-abiding people. Illegal immigrants by definition do not fit into that category. How about you actually enforce the current laws before you get all worked up about making new ones. If you know someone is renting to an illegal immigrant, how about turning in the illegal immigrant? And how exactly do you know they're illegal? Are you going to check each and every person in Fremont? Or is there some sort of racial profiling that you'll have to do? The mob mentality that is coming across on this comment board is quite disturbing coming from rural middle class America. Grab your torches and pitch forks! Let the witch hunt begin! if we the people stop the illegal immigrants then they would stop coming to our country - as an black american we were not asked to be brought to this country we were forced and when we try to speak our language we were beat to death, so why do we have to push 1 for english and 2 spanish, i just don't understand very confused about helping hispantics to get all they can from our countries.

Good for them. About time someone is taking up a effort to get rid of them. And don't say they are doing the jobs others will not, tell that to the plumbers, electricians and hvac guys they are replacing with illegals. After some of the work I have allegially seen done in new construction I would not enter those buildings in fear of dying. Its a matter of the greedy business owner charging for top class work from the customer but delivering 8th class work from illegals. For those of you will new homes, I allegially fear for your safety.

"give me a break"-no you give us a break. i am so tired of people thinking-just because we want laws to be upheld that we are not careing people. i am tired of paying their health care costs-when they have all their illegal, ill-legtimate children. or when they shot each other, or when they drive with no insurance and get hurt and hurt other people. we pay for extra teachers to try and teach these kids english when their parents refuse to learn. businesses spend money on translators. you have to start somewhere and i commend the Fremont people for not giving up and doing the right thing for their city.

Give me...what part of the definition of "illegal" is escaping you? There are other hard-working people who go through the proper channels (and yes, they may seem cumbersome to some) and become LEGAL citizens. They're fine...it's the law-breakers that are the problem. If they're breaking the immigration laws, then it seems to me that they probably don't have much respect for other laws, either. Reference numerous cases in other states involving murder, rape, etc......we don't need that here!

We would make it illegal because we don't like criminals taking away the American Dream from US citizens. Take a look at the Drywall industry in Omaha over the last 30 years. Look at the number of unionized companies then compared to now. Look at what has happened to wages being paid. THEN, look at the demographics of the workforce. It is no coincidence that this is also the profession that employs illegals the most behind farming. Sorry, but some of us care more about the American Dream for legal US residents BEFORE the so called "American Dream for non-Americans."

Amazing, if people are against this we are "bleeding-heart liberals" Maybe the people against this realize that it will cost soooooooooo much money and will accomplish NOTHING!!!! This is a federal problem and Fremont has set up a task force to work directly with the state and FEDERAL government to see what a city can do to stop the illegals. I am against illegals, I just don't want all of my tax money wasted on something that will do nothing.

GMAB, hard working or not, you have to come here LEGALLY to have any chance of living the "American Dream". It's not about being "redneck or racist" it's about arresting individuals who are harboring illegal (keyword there, ILLEGAL) immigrants.

you either are not informed, or an illegal yourself. illegals proves many a problem for the LEGAL U.S. citizan. 1)they receive free health care. 2)they receive free schooling. 3)they do not pay taxes, as most the time they are paid under the table. 4)they steal ssn's due to they are illegal to get credit and housing. Any law bidding tax paying citizen is paying for them. and dont give me the "im prejudice" stuff. my wife is a LEGAL immigrant from the phillippines, and im a veteran of the U.S., and a proud (2x)citizen. illegals should all be round up and shipped back and told to come back the legal way. no exceptions.

Give me your reasoning as to why American taxpayers should support through their hard earned $$$s the increased free medical, additional police force, education, etc. of people who cannot or will not obey our laws? Your uninformed labeling of Fremont as 'Redneck' is unfortunate. Do your homework - find out how much we spend on supporting illegals in this country - do you really think our tax pocketbook is bottomless or would it be better to spend those dollars on better schools, healthcare, etc. for the people who have earned (LEGALLY)the right to be in this country? I'd like to see them ALL deported and soon.
