A dangerous spot along the Keystone Trail in Omaha has cyclists, runners and walkers concerned.

“I think they keep a pretty good eye on the trails and somebody does report it when it is bad,” says cyclist Lisa Caveye.

The Papio Natural Resources District is taking responsibility after a mower crushed one side of the trail creating a one-lane passageway near the Dodge Street bridge. If walkers and bikers cross paths there’s not much margin for error between the retaining wall and the hazard.

The damaged concrete has been marked and a barricade warns riders peddling southbound who have less time to react after cruising under Dodge Street. “It might not be a bad idea for them to put up a sign that cyclists should dismount, either that or fix it," says cyclist Christine Smith.

That's the plan as the Papio NRD is getting bids from contractors to repair the concrete within 10 days.

There are other trouble spots along the Keystone Trail that emerged after the summer storms.

To the north near 87th and Fort Street the creek bank has washed out within a foot of the bike path. The city parks department is working with an engineer to come up with a solution. A parks planner and NRD expert recently inspected area trails and their report will help prioritize repairs.

Yes, Buildr's comments are amusing. I own three cars, but ride a bicycle to work. My road taxes go to pay for the West Dodge expressway, but I rarely drive on it, or anywhere west of 90th. I suppose my high health insurance premiums might also go to help pay for his heart bypass surgery sometime in the future. :)

Love the comment on the liability issue from buildr1 who cares if 1% use it. Maybe if the other 80% tried to use it in some way the obesity problem would not be an issue. As for given Kevin seeing I don't use the expressway but once a month maybe the drivers who use it everyday should pay the majority of the up keep. Its not an issue of whining, we all pay our taxes for things we barely use or may have negative feelings about it. So suck it up and welcome to good ole USA

@Buildr1: Obviously you aren't aware of the statutes protecting recreational land. Also, where's the cite for your 1% figure? If you haven't used Omaha's trails, you're missing out.

You build a trail along a creek and areas wash out sometimes what do think would happen? Shouldn't the mower company be the one responsible for the damaged concrete.

I'm gald I don't own & operate the 27 miles of liability that less than 1% of Omahans use ! I couldn't sleep at night if I did.....

Why don't some of the cyclists get together with some concrete patch and fix it temporarily. That seems a more prudent option then whining to local news agencies for someone else to fix it. After all, cyclist are the ones who use it the most...
