A local group is reaching out to the family of Amber Harris, the Omaha girl kidnapped and killed in 2005. Boys To Men is helping to fix up the Harris home.

Boys To Men teaches disadvantaged youths the skills they need to get a job. The young men were hard at work Tuesday on a little home improvement at 16th and Spencer while learning a lesson in the process.

“What we're doing here at the Harris house is giving them what we call a community hug,” says Carlton Tucker of Boys To Men. “We figure if anybody needs a hug, it’s the Harris' and what we're doing is some general repair on their home.”

The crews are focused now on power-washing and painting the outside and will be also be replacing the windows, kitchen cabinet and flooring.

“I do believe what they're learning is to give back,” says Tucker. “It's not always taking, but sometimes you have to give back."

Twenty-three people are currently in the Boys To Men program.

They keep talking about this program but they give no information on how to get some more young men involved and off the streets, if anyone has a phone number to this program or any other info on where to go to get more young men involved, please share.

As others have said, there are programs that help the elderly or disabled. Maybe the Harris's could not afford to do some of those things to their home. So what? They have been thru the worst thing a parents could go thru. Melissa Harris has been the glue that held that family together and even organized vigils, etc for the community. so I feel they deserve some nice things done for them. People need to find something else to really gripe about.

This is a great idea. to just me....these people were on a mission to find a killer and would be very hard to work or put some little TLC at home. This is a good thing for anyone. Sometimes good people who try do the right thing deserve it as well.. These people have had a rough few years let them enjoy this. Amber would be so happy for them...God Bless

"less able bodied" I'd rather lose all my limbs than a kid. Good job to all involved.

What a wonderful program, however I would like to see the program help those who were truly in need such as the elderly, disabled or low income single parent.

cece, there are programs in the communtiy that does these home repairs and painting for the elderly and disabled. One was just recently done. It was the 'Paint-a thon'. There are other programs that have volunteers that make repairs to their homes. It's nice that there is a group that helps out a family that has been through one of the worse things that anyone can go through. Loosing a child to such horrible circumstances.God bless all of the volunteers at 'Boys to Men' and to the Harris family.

Glad top see that the community can pay it forward, while they will never be able to replace Amber....we can let the Harris family know they are cared for and about deeply!

I don't want to take anything away from what this family has gone through. This is a very nice thing to be done. However, I would rather hear that this was being done for someone less able bodied. The elderly or disabled.
