At least a half-dozen motorists wound up with flat tires after driving over debris that spilled onto westbound Interstate 80 near 84th Street Tuesday morning.

Pieces of scrap metal and wood with nails in it apparently fell from a passing vehicle. It's not known who was responsible for the mess. Police were quick to remove the debris.

Many got out to change their own flats. Others waited for help. Some received aid from the Nebraska State Patrol's Motorist Assist Program.

Isn't this considered a road hazzard? And if so, when you buy the tires, doesn't anyone spend the $6 per tire for road hazzard insurance?

I agree, with livid. Tires are expensive what a careless person. How would he like it if he got all four flats on his car.

CDL licensed drivers are required to strap down their loads and adhere to all safety guidelines as defined by the state. It would be nice if all drivers would extend the same courtesy! It would be even nicer if all companies (especially small ones) would hold their drivers accountable, and not cut corners on safety. It only gives the rest of us a bad name!

aren't cameras trained on all the major interstate arteries around town? can't big brother look for the culprit on the tapes and make 'em pay for all the damages??

This has to be the most ridiculous story I think I have ever heard on here. It's like a cat being stuck in a tree and then all these people write in and want the tree taken down or something. Like it's someone fault the cat climbed it. Running over stuff in the raod stinks, but its part of driving a car. Get over it and pay attention while you drive.

I wish the police and troopers would enforce Nebraska's law which requires all loads be covered (pick-ups, trailers, commercial and non-commercial vehicles are covered by the law). The other pet peeve I have is I wish they would ticket operators that drive their construction equipment on city streets to and from jobs - this equipment is not licensed for on-road use and is to be transported on a truck when going to and from job sites. The past three days I got stuck behind these guys when driving down Maple.

This bring a point that there should be regulations in hauling material. Oh wait, who would enforce it? The cops couldn't do it.

You think that debris from the truck that hit the power pole out west could have flown all the way to I-80 and 84th St? Or, or, maybe I loosened everything up when he hit the pole and it fell out while he was on the interstate. I find it hard to believe that nobody saw the stuff come off the truck.

I can't believe nobody turned in the vechicle that lost all that debri on the road. That person should be liable for all those repairs.

The same thing happened a while ago on Hwy 6/31 to a few people I know. NOT fun.

Happens all the time out where I live on Hwy. 36, which is the route to the county landfill. Haulers are supposed to secure their loads and cover them. Rarely is there enforcement of that law. Also rare is the ability to identify those haulers, since the vehicles are patched together and the plates are either missing or unreadable. I repair one or more tires monthly due to roofing nails and the like left on the highway. For those who were caught up in this mess: I feel your pain and hope you can "nail" this guy.

Numerous times I have seen debris on this stretch of the interstate. People, please use common sense when hauling- cover it up or strap it down.

i would have been livid had i been one of those motorists. tires are not cheap!
