A police officer Tasers an unruly suspect and the suspect later claims he didn't deserve the shock. It's a situation that could end up in a lawsuit. With that in mind, the Plattsmouth Police Department has added video and audio to the weapon.

Ignore police orders and getting hit with a Taser shouldn't come as a shock. The Plattsmouth Police Department recently had its first Taser incident since being equipped with five Tasers with cameras and microphones nearly two years ago.

“A lot of people are gonna see it before it hits the courtroom and it's going to show exactly what happened,” says Plattsmouth Police Officer Jon Hardy.

There's no way to edit the recording. In this incident, the suspect had pushed over a main street garbage container. The tape shows the officer immediately called for an ambulance as a precaution.

Police Chief Brian Paulsen says the video and audio helps protect taxpayers if a suspect claims police brutality. “He's not going to come back and saying he wasn't doing anything wrong, this isn't a guy standing on the corner being Joe Q. Citizen, this is a guy who's acting defiant and already damaged city property.”

After being Tasered the suspect was arrested for public drunkeness and disorderly conduct. If there's any argument that police went too far a judge or jury won't have to rely on eyewitnesses alone.

Douglas County does not have the cameras because the cost is $500 apiece. Sheriff Tim Dunning says it's too expensive to equip 110 Tasers and he says it's all or none, because a defense attorney might question why some Taser incidents are caught on tape and some aren't.

The Omaha Police Department has 100 Tasers and doesn’t plan on equipping them with cameras in the immediate future.

Wow, some people here crack me up. Everyone always questions what happened and who's word they should take. These cameras will answer all those questions. A lot of people always say that they were there and he did'nt desrve it. Most of them are friends of the criminal. You could hear in the background noise that not only were the police yelling at him but other people around him that knew his name. arley watson most likely deserved it. He is a career criminal and he committed a crime, resisted and was disorderly. and your actions were caught on video. Good luck suing for police brutality.

Amos, get out and enjoy the sunshine. Staying inside has made you bitter.

Amos, I make regular donations to the police and firefighters. As you see I am for getting criminals off the street, and if money was no object then yes I would spend it. Yes, I'm sure money is an issue, that's why they have budgets, and training is part of that issue. Yes you are correct that using a gun is more of a liability then a taser, but if people are going to be idiots then they deserve the treatment they get. The police identify themselves, and if you are going to be stupid and try to evade them, then I guess you deserver to be shot or tasered. If you break the law, then you are subjected to the consequences that come with doing wrong. Any tools that we can put use to prevent/eliminate crimes is money well spent in my book. Yes I make regular donations, and give them the option to spend it as they see fit. They are the professionals.

Omaha can use income from the Graffiti Van to buy the cameras. Then they can actually enforce the law by recording and tasering the graffiti artists.

OK anonoymous please pony up the $$$ for the cameras. How about a fundraiser. Will you run it?? What about the other equipment that police officers need before taser cameras?? How about training dollars-that can reduce liability. Plattsmouth has had 1 taser deployment in three years. Money well spent??? Again, they do make cameras for handguns. Isn't there more of a liability with shooting someone than tazing them????

False Police Brutality claims cost a lot more than 100 grand. Tazer cams are worth their investment

Posted by: Amos on Aug 19, 2008 at 11:41 AM
OK, $500 for each Taser with 100 Tasers as the sheriff and OPD chief state they have. SO $50,000 each for the sheriffs department and police ($100,000). Man, where does it end??

What does it cost the taxpayers when the idiots that need to be tasered, and they end up filing a lawsuit? If it's in the budget, and it removes the possibility of stupid lawsuits, then I'm for it. While I think the cost is high, with most technology the cost does come down with time. If you're not on the cutting edge of techology, then you can get some pretty good things to use at a lower price point. Sometimes it pays to wait. I'm all for getting criminals off the street, and if this is another option available for the police officers to be able to prove they are doing there job without undo force, then why not let them get it. Unless of course you are a criminal, and don't want them to be able to prove they did the right thing when arresting you. As they say a picture is worth a 1000 words.

This cost is totally justified & JUST for this reason..."oh poor me I am so hurt & didn't deserve it" so it is his word vs the police officers (who should win anyway), and then the ever popular "poor me" lawsuit. That camera will save that county & police dept THOUSANDS from suing scum.

Come down to Lincoln and work for UNLPD.

I can't see the justification for taser cameras due to the cost. $500 for a camera on an $800 taser...cost prohibitive for agencies that have alot of Tasers. You have in-police car cameras and now cameras officers can have on their shoulder mic. What next, cameras for service weapons??? There;s only soo much money out there in police department budgets. If you're in a rich city, you can get the stud equipment. If anyone can tell me where that rich city is, please do and I'll lateral there.
