The Douglas County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of an inmate found unresponsive in his cell Monday morning.

Forty-five-year-old Robert Craddock was jailed Saturday in a theft case. Authorities say he was observed lying on his bunk in a single cell room in the Medical Housing Unit at 9:41 a.m. He was unresponsive and the staff began performing CPR.

The Omaha Fire Department arrived and continued CPR. Craddock was transported to Creighton University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation into the cause of death is standard procedure anytime someone dies in custody. A grand jury will also be called.

This is a time of grief and the kindest thoughts are the ones that we want to remeber so if you cant say somthing nice then keep your mouth shut! Thank you to all that have taken enough interest in my step fathers death to reasearch the topic and leave your condolences. (:Pray & Believe:)

Cara, obivously you have never seen how bad the omaha jail was. there is a REASON it was closed. it is NOT a double standard. Mr Craddock was on a medical wing being supervised. omaha jail didn't have such a wing and wouldn't have done anything if it did. my heart goes out to mr craddock's family at this difficult time.

I hear completely different comments than I did when someone died in the Omaha jail. Then it was the jailers fault. This time "it was his time". Double standards.

You are so true people do just die and some people dont always tell the truth about thier health. The sad part about all of this is that it happened in the public and and now a family that is grieving his loss must pick up and move on with life. IT will not be the family in my family without out him. The funny part I do recall being a child and taking candy out of my moms purse, should I go to jail or has the statute of limitations run out. Yes I am sure that staff did a wonderful job in taking care of my uncle, so as a family we don't blame them. WE just want to know what happened. This is not a point fingers game, this is what it is a loss of life no matter what anyone else writes. He was what he was family, uncle, father, grandfather, brother, and a really good friend when you needed one. Robert Craddock made mistakes like all of us, like I said be for his just happened for all the world to see and now the world is judging. But as a child of God , we signed up for this. The Blessed

Many of you if not close to all are judging, not only Mr. Craddock but also the officers and medical staff. It makes me sick to read what most of you are writing. Bottom line is most aren't honest about their medical conditions; most don't take meds nor see a doctor. You expect the staff to work miracles and when this doesn't happen you point fingers and blame. IF he had not been in jail would the outcome have been different? Only God knew when it was his time to go. I commend ALL staff that works for the Dept. of Corrections. They work hard, harder than most of you will ever realize, they deal with things daily that the average person would turn and walk away from. UNTIL you walk a day in their shoes one should not point fingers. For the officers and medical staff, keep your heads up, be proud of what you do and don't let the average Joe get you down by their comments when they know nothing about what you do.

Yeah I am sure that a guard killed a inmate. That's the last place they want to be. MAny people are arrested with pre-existing conditions or high on dope, anything could've caused this. And in a jail there's millions of camera's everywhere, take a tour and see. They've offered them before. A jailer see's more criminals in a day than a cop arrests in a year so they say. And it's obvious they did their job if they performed CPR and tried to save the guy as stated. Most of us on here wouldn't even step in there if offered a tour, you'd be too scared. These people do it everyday.

GN, Here's a CRIMINAL? Arrested, yes. Tried, no. Convicted, no. Sentenced, no. Unless you know something more than we do, Robert Craddock was NOT a CRIMINAL. Do tell.

Posted by: GN on Aug 20, 2008 at 10:17 AM
I do not see what all the up roar is about. Here is a CRIMINAL who will not be back on the streets victimizing society. He made his choices and those choices landed him in jail.

Somebody asked why so many people die in jail? The only medical information the jail has is what the person who is arrested tells them.If they are mad or intoxicated they may not tell the jail staff of their problems. Many of the people put in jail have not been getting any kind of proper medical treatment to start with so their problems get worse and it is sad this is where they have to die. The City had to close their jail because everybody said Douglas County Corrections was a better place-- apparently not.

Sometimes people simply die.

My uncle passing could not have been seen by anyone except God. When it is you time it is your time. I thank everyone that have posted condolences for my family it much appreciated. Yes, as a family would have wanted to be by his side when he went. But this is not a movie, this real life. In real life people die in all kinds of ways. I am a tax payer and yes tax payer fit the bill for every inmate in jail , not just my uncle. What's hard about life sometimes, is that you want so bad to make somethings of yourself and have other look up to you. My uncle in his own way was that for a lot of people in our family.Since his passing my dad and family in York Ne, have received so much love and concern. Wanting to make sure they are okay. It's people like them and those who have sent there love out even threw posting that make this not has hard. Just remember one day Dave you will want someone to care and love your pain. Not judging or say ignorant things. Just what the bible says Love.

To Dave, yes, maybe he should of been in jail to pay for his crime. That doesn't mean he should be died in there. You and your entire family must be perfect and NEVER commit errors. Yes stealing is wrong and you should do the time if you do the crime but he should have been treated medically. To many deaths are occuring in jail. Why aren't these security guards doing their job it's not like their rocket sciencetist or anything.

I am sorry for your families' loss. May God Bless you all!

Posted by: Dave on Aug 19, 2008 at 11:16 AM
Hey if he had not been in jail maybe he would have died at home thats all I am saying. Its no different then all the people on here saying the people at the jail are responsible for his death. They aren't just like if someone dies oat their home of natural causes, which I ma sure this will also turn out to be,do we hold the family responsible too? No we don't so why should the city or jail be held repsonsible?

That is right Milah and David, and to Dave stealing and him being in jail has nothing to do with his death. So your saying if you go to jail your going to die? Get real! Oh i'm sorry your probably one of those perfect ones. Yea right!

Posted by: lostadadthisway on Aug 19, 2008 at 07:42 AM
some of you people have no heart, and alot of you need to remember that it is "innocent until proven guilty"

Posted by: Shawna on Aug 19, 2008 at 07:27 AM
Isn't the whole purpose of them putting someone in the medical unit so that they can monitor them so this type of thing doesn't happen?

Posted by: Donnie on Aug 19, 2008 at 06:59 AM
Milah, I am truly sorry for your family's loss.Your words were a perfect response to the insensitive comments that have been made not only regarding your uncle, but many of the families that find themselves the center of media and public attention. God bless.

Posted by: TIM on Aug 18, 2008 at 09:27 PM
Thank you Milah, and Dave that was shallow. Reports say the charge was theft by unlawful taking a class C misdemeanor. Class C being the lowest level of misdemeanor. Traffic violations can be higher levels.

Posted by: Cathy on Aug 18, 2008 at 09:23 PM
Milah is correct. Judge not, lest you will be judged. Check out your closet and that of your family members....you might be surprised at what you find.

Posted by: David on Aug 18, 2008 at 08:48 PM
So if you end up in jail for any reason - it is okay if you end up dead? That is the saddest reasoning i have ever heard of. Why do people keep dying in jail? I mean- damn- if they are guilty of any crime at all- maybe it would just be better to execute them on the spot. This is just running with Dave's outlook on this whole thing. Maybe we are not as far away from the workings of Iran as we would like to think.

To answer everyone thus far about this posting. Yes he had family he had children, brothers sister and host of other family that now have to deal with the loss of his family. As his niece, it shocks me how people judge. or jump to conclusion about a person life. Never that we all make mistakes and all have problems. Some more out in the open than others. It is horrible to to say that he has now passed on because of what he may have done. Life is fleeting and time is short. No matter who you are life is life and family is family. People loved him cared for him. So before you someone else post such negative comments. Think what if it was someone you loved. We all sin and fall short of the glory of God.

Or some such thing. Too bad for his family, and kids if he had any.

Posted by: Dave on Aug 18, 2008 at 03:17 PM
Not to sound shallow, but maybe if he was not in jail for THEFT in the first place this would not have happened? I am sue JMD will be on the phone and the taxpayers will foot the bill for yet another criminals demise.
