A second firefighter was arrested Monday in connection with a drug investigation by the Lincoln Police Department.

Fifty-four-year-old Mark Eberspacher turned himself in and was booked Monday morning after a meeting with police that was arranged through his attorney. He was taken to the Lancaster County Jail for narcotics-related offenses.

Firefighter-paramedic John Massie also faces charges for stealing morphine meant for patients and using it while on duty.

The 28-year-old Massie is charged with possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor theft. He faces up to five years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both if convicted.

Massie was arrested at his home and later released after posting $250 bond. Police say he stole the morphine from an ambulance on July 5th.

Both men have been taken off duty.

It's not about race, the fact of the matter is, someone needs to step up and make them accountable for what they did. We look up to them and our kids look up to them. The next time my child looks at a firefighter, what should I tell her? Not saying, that we're any different but we pay them to uphold the law and here we have more than one breaking the law. So right is right and wrong is wrong. So let's make an example out of them and yes we ALL make mistakes, but the rest of us would have to pay for them so should they.

It is obvious that you do not like firemen...your attacks are very personal and directed twards them. Maybe you need to take a look at yourself and be a little less critical and hostile twards others. And No, I am NOT a firefighter, in case you were wondering!

Hey Johnny... Quit WHINING about your small or inadequate PAY CHECK if you are indeed an Omahoa F.D person, quit feeding the whine about risking yourself for cheap pay.. Get a Life ! Most people work heck of a lot harder than a FIRE CITY OR STATE person does

We risk our lives everyday for you and what do we get?? A small paycheck, lot's of work with no overtime pay and little public respect. Maybe some of you should apply for our job. Maybe, just maybe, you will see why what we see and do can drive anybody off the edge. Get a life people!!

I hate to see anyone in this situation but one must admit that we tend to hold firefighters/paramedics/police to a little higher standard. After all, they are the ones who are supposed to be saving us in times of peril. Not really sure I want a paramedic on morphine to be carrying me down a ladder. And, as far as your comment about the difficulty of their job, I agree. You'll note that they (the bashers) do not give their full name. Awfully easy to pass judgement on someone when you can do it anonymously. If "John Doe" was to put his name down and bash the police/firefighters, etc., he might, just might, feel retribution. Yeah, I know, a cop isn't supposed to get info on a person without probable cause but if you believe it DOESN'T happen, then I have soome ocean front property in AZ for sale.

Every one needs to stop attacking Firemen and Policemen. 99.9% of them do a fine job every day protecting us and putting their lives on the line for us. I see some very immature comments here. This blog went the wrong direction!

Thank you, EJ. Firefighters are among the finest in society, and the fact that these two fell from grace doesn't warrent the scorn I see in many of these comments, in my opinion. If your job is as tough, dangerous and important as our firefighters and police officers, please let us know. Otherwise, I'm not certain why you think it's okay to show this level of disrespect.

TERRY, F.Y.I.I AM NOT A FIRE FIGHTER! I DO HOWEVER, HAVE THE UPMOST RESPECT FOR BOTH POLICEMEN AND FIREMEN, BUT I THINK IT IS VERY UNFAIR TO ATTACK ALL FIREMEN B/C THESE TWO THUGS MADE A VERY POOR DECISION.

If they were man of color??? REALLY? Do we have to pull out the race card every single time?

Posted by: llr on Aug 19, 2008 at 11:00 AM
One would think that all people employed as public servants...cops AND firemen...would be subject to mandatory random drug testing. Oh that's right, they have a union to protect them from that sort of thing the rest of us menials are subjected to...

Posted by: terry on Aug 19, 2008 at 01:25 AM
Real good Gary- Now we have to listen to all the firefighters cry and whine about your comments. They'll make excuses and say that what these guys did isn't that bad. Also drugs aren't a big deal for fireman cause they are exposed to 3 million degree temperatures everyday and toxic chemicals every 1/2 hour. Heck theyv'e already started posting responses trying to push the attention to this story off on the cops drinking and driving instead of the facts at hand. Typical hose-dragger mentality.

In many case in California..Public sevice employees are treated different in the eyes of the law. Thanks to the beaurocrats. Nothing will change... The creeps will walk.

Posted by: EJ on Aug 18, 2008 at 09:41 PM
GARY, I DISAGREE. I NO ONES EVER HEARS ABOUT POLICE OFFICERS DOING ANY WRONG BECAUSE THEY ALL COVER FOR EACH OTHER. I KNOW OF SEVERAL THAT DRINK AND DRIVE ETC BUT THE GOOD OL BOY SYSTEM SEEMS TO KEEP THEM FROM MAKING THE NEWS. UNFORTUNATELY NO MATTER WHAT THE OCCUPATION THERE ARE ALWAYS THE ONES THAT MAKE BAD DECISIONS.

Posted by: Gary on Aug 18, 2008 at 09:18 PM
$250 bond!? My goodness. Talk about a double standard. If these guys were police officers they would throw the book at them. If they are guilty I see probation and continued employment on The LFD in the future. Omaha has a couple firemen who were retained on OFD after convicted for drugs. Why not Lincoln? Firemen can do no wrong these days.

Heartbreaking is not the word I'm thinking...pathetic is more like it.

Posted by: Laura on Aug 18, 2008 at 03:55 PM
Wow. This is heartbreaking.

True facts: Why are we being so lenient to those that have sworn to serve our communities. If he's being Fined $10,000 but post bond for $250 (which isn't the equivalent of 10%) Even more so, he was probably 'Hi'while her was assisting people. I know about innocent until proven guilty, but would the consequences have been the same if he were a man of color. Our criminal justice system, tends to hide falsehoods and cover up scandals like this and I hope this doesn't turn into another incident of 'Authority figures abusing their power without repremand'. Make examples of these cowards like you would to the 13 or 17 year olds, who screw up! These are men whom are role modeled and this should not go untouched. "THEY WERE USING ON DUTY"
