A Carter Lake man remains in critical condition at the Nebraska Medical Center following a crash on Interstate 80 in Council Bluffs Saturday morning.

Police say 30-year-old Shannon Hammermeister was speeding eastbound on I-80 when he lost control and hit a guard rail near the 24th Street exit around 1:30 a.m. Hammermeister was thrown from the vehicle.

I'm sure many of his relatives are thinking "I wish he hadn't been speeding", that doesn't make them any less devastated about the situation. My mother died in a car accident because she wasn't wearing a seatbelt. As someone who wears a seatbelt EVERY time I get in a car, I obviously wish my mom had been doing the same. That does not make it any easier that she's gone, it probably makes it harder. All I'm saying is PLEASE put yourself in other people's shoes before you start making comments like that. Think about how his friends and family feel right now. They don't need your negativity or "told ya so" attitude, they need our support and prayers. I just pray that none of them are reading these comments.

Prayers are with you. Keep it up Shannon! You can do this! We love you all!

Our thoughts and prayers are with Shannon, Melissa and the rest of the family. Hang in there guys, we all love you no matter what other people think or say. Stay strong!

We all know how he "should have" been driving. Lets just stop. Now is not the time for this. He needs our prayers and support not critism...not now.

I AGREE WITH MICHELLE.. EVERYONE DOES MAKE THERE OWN MISTAKES.. AND YOU GOT NASTY COMMENTS KEEP THEM TO YOURSELF.. SHANNON PULL THROUGH MAN. THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

My thoughts and prayers are with Shannon and his family. I pray also for the heartless people who make inconsiderate comments like those below. I pray that the Lord may fill their hearts with compassion.

If you can't see the truth, then you're a fool. Anybody with minimal frontal lobe activity(about 1/2 the divers on I80, I'm guessing) knows that people are plain stupid when it comes to driving, then they wreck, then they kill somebody, then they boo hoo about it, then they go to jail, then they get sued even though they're already broke, then their spouse leaves them...... You all get the idea. Stop acting stupid and understand what posters like "E' are trying to tell you.

This is to his family from mine! Our prayers go out to all of you! I know Shannon and he is strong, he can pull through this! Mel, stay strong, honey!

If you don't know the situation keep your nasty comments to yourself. Everyone makes mistakes even you quick to judge people. This man has a beautiful family and did not deserve what he got. He should be in your prayers not your criticisms. He has been going through alot the last couple of months so please give the guy a break!!!! Pray for him and his family I am. Melissa and her beautiful children need support right now not negative comments like that. So I will also pray for you and your ever so perfect families that something this tragic never touches your lives. God bless Shannon and his family!!!

I am a very close friend of the mother of Shannon's children. This is a very tragic time for her and their children, I pray for Shannon's recovery 100%. I know the tragedy of losing a loved one to a horrible car accident, my daughter is now a single mother because of one. It is absolutely heartbreaking and something you don't get over. I pray for Shannon and his family that he will come through.

You people are quick to judge. You are just the perfect right? Never would harm a soul!??? Well you are now. Keep your mean thoughts to yourself. My thoughts & prayers go to this family. They are going thru alot right now and don't need negative comments from you heartless people. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all. Shannon, I hope you recover quickly. Melissa, stay strong.

I hope that Shannon recovers quickly, and has learned to slow down. We all can learn from this, slow down so you can get there alive!

E's comment's are harsh - but you all have to admit - driver's like this put us ALL at risk - and our kids! If they don't care enough about themselves not to speed, that's one thing - but the hurt they cause their OWN family (yes - its called personal responbility!) shows a lack of maturity and common sense - thank God he didn't hurt anyone else's child when he made this choice.

Posted by: Too Bad on Aug 17, 2008 at 09:08 PM
Good that he didn't take anybody else with him, though. Irresponsible drivers kill more kids than anything. Here's to a speedy recovery, bet you'll think twice about speeding again.

"E"-You had to have known that by presenting a cruel statement and an inaccurate place of blame, you would be held accountable by other people reading it. i dont think anyone has made any remarks that say speeding isn't a problem or that it doesn't happen "across the border." Your heartless comment was followed by one that had no validity or relevance to this tragedy. The accident was in cb where there arent any stadiums that would have opened up more resources to watch for people speeding. EVERYONE has made a bad decision at some point in time-even the perfect "E". I hope the people in your life don't have to see that you would want them fighting for their life if they ever make a mistake. My thoughts and prayers are with Shannon and his wife, children, and other loved ones.

Posted by: E on Aug 17, 2008 at 05:58 PM
So you guys think that the bad drivers instantly turn good when they cross the border? If this happend to a fmaily member of mine that was SPEEDING I would have the same thoughts. I am sick of all of the bad drivers and the speeders that put us all at risk.

Posted by: Mandi on Aug 17, 2008 at 12:29 PM
"E".. I hope to God that none of your family members go through what Shannon and his family are going through right now. NOONE deserves something like this. NOONE. God have mercy on YOUR soul.

Posted by: a on Aug 17, 2008 at 09:52 AM
got what he deserved? he made a mistake but this is not a deserved punishment....for him or those who love him. This man is someones child, someones husband, someones father, and someones friend. It could have easily been someone you care about-would they deserve it then?

Posted by: K on Aug 17, 2008 at 08:42 AM
E, maybe you should read the article again. It was in CB not Omaha. Read before you make such comments. You are in our prayers for a speedy recovery Shannon.

Hey E...What stadium are they building in Council Bluffs?

Posted by: E on Aug 16, 2008 at 11:22 PM
Got what he deserved! I am tired of the speeding in this area! How about fewer stadiums and more police on the road!

Posted by: joemac on Aug 16, 2008 at 09:22 PM
this man has been through alot ...he's strong though ..strong as they come

Posted by: Tired of speeders! on Aug 16, 2008 at 08:50 PM
Such a shame, and all he had to do to get their safely was drive the speed limit...When will people wake up and learn? Hopefully his mistake will keep ONE person from speeding on I-80.

We know Shannon and were sad to here about the crash. We were returing home last night when we heard the sirens. You always hope it some you don't know. I send our prayers and thoughts to him and his family.
