Channel 6 News caught up with Marsha Smoot of Bellevue who shares her story about how Bariatric surgery not only changed her life, but saved it.

Going for a walk, spending time with her daughter, just about everything is now easier for Marsha. When Channel 6 News interviewed her last year before Bariatric surgery, activity meant playing cards.

"I had an unhealthy love affair with food and it was affecting my health to the point of being extremely dangerous."

Now, after losing 140 pounds, the sleep apnea machine and other necessities for diabetes and asthma are no longer needed. "I knew that I'd feel better, I would never have dreamt so many health issues would be resolved, just unbelievable."

Then there's the emotional change. At a family wedding, Smoot felt so bad about herself she just wanted to disappear. "I actually left early."

The operation at Creighton University Medical Center gave Smoot a second chance and gave daughter Christa her mom back. "I'm just glad she got the surgery."

Reminders of Marsha's old life are never far away. She has a copy of the story we did a year ago and watches it every once in a while for a reason.

"I save that just to remind myself, you don't want to go back there. This was a tool to get you where you are today and from here on out it's up to me."

Marsha says she has no regrets and has not had one complication. She truly feels the operation saved her life.

Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention and treatment of obesity.

Marsha's not saying the surgery is right for everyone. She says it really is an individual decision, but does suggest people with serious health issues at least consider it as an option. Talk to your doctor first.

I think that bariatric surgery might be the only way for me to lose weight. I had a traumatic knee injury almost 10 years ago, causing me to gain 50 lbs, and most forms of cardio exercise are now impossible for me. I'm in a Catch-22...my ortho would like me to lose some weight before a knee replacement, but with one bad leg it is very hard to exercise. But I'm not really in a position to do a gastric bypass or lapband, and I don't know if my insurance would cover it anyway, since mild high blood pressure seems to be my only adverse affect from being overweight.

I too have problems with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholestrol, asthma, arthritis, etc. To those of you who think that all of us can lose weight by watching what we eat and exercising, that is not always true. Did you know that the medication that is taken also causes weight gain? I wish I could lose weight on my own, however I have not been as fortunate as some of you. And also the company I work for which is a prominant insurance here is Omaha does not consider this operation (lap-band or gastric bypass) as medically necessary, even though my doctors have appealled this decision three times for me, however they continue to pay for hundreds of dollars worth of perscriptions each month. Go figure, the surgery would benefit me, and it would also benefit them because they would not be paying as much for perscriptions, office visits, etc.

Congrats! The surgery is a tool that works for many. I would love to sit on the couch eating bon-bons. Instead I sit at my desk at work and race from activity to activity in the evening skipping meals and scarfing what ever is handy. Surgery wouldn't work for me, but I applaud those who take the step to do so when it will help them.

Over 6 years ago I had bariatric surgery and lost over 200 pounds. It has meant a completely new life and much more enjoyment. One caution, its not a "quick fix" and it does take a huge "mental adjustment" and change in your lifestyle. And yes, I have been able to keep almost all the lost weight off for these years. Congratulations and good luck.

Ok, whatever happened to eating right and getting up off your lazy butt and exercising? Losing weight is not supposed to be easy - it's suppose to be hard so you won't turn around and eat yourself into an oblivion after you've lost all your weight. Walking or running on a treadmill once daily for 30 - 45 min and not sitting in front of the TV eating Bon Bons works too....

She gives others of us hope that it can be done. I pray she can stay healthy.

Having the lap-band surgery myself, these types of procedures are a "life-saver". Like the woman in this story, it gave my children back their mother. I have not lost the amount of weight as she did, as the lap-band is slower(53 lbs in a year myself), i still feel and look better. WAY TO GO!

Way to go!!! I hope you now find all the happiness that the health issues hide from you. Great job Mom, doing not only for you but for the well being of your child. She needed you to do this as well!

Good for her, if should couldn't do it by herself, then this was obviously the right answer for her. I hope she continues to stay healthy & on the right track.
