Trovato's restaurant, a Dundee neighborhood tradition for 52 years closed Sunday night. On the menu were special memories for the eatery that opened in 1956.

Colleen Reilly has served tables at 50th and Underwood for the last 12 years. "We've always kept staff here, this has always been a place that keeps staff and that’s the thing we're going to miss the most, we're going to miss each other’s company."

The situation is a tough one for Reilly and the other 27 employees at Trovatos. Jeff Camp has owned the restaurant for the last two years and understands the ups and downs of the food business.

"Absolutely, this is a terrible time for restaurants from an economic standpoint. We actually filed for Chapter 11 in March, but coming out of Chapter 11 is not as easy as it seems. You have to have your landlord's approval and this time we didn't so we're kind of stuck as far as that goes."

Five employees are family members and many loyal customers were on hand for the final serving. "It's very, very sad, such a regular place, we've been coming here for years and to see it close with nothing in the works, it's unfortunate," said Anne Macklin of Omaha.

"I can't say that we're moving from here to someplace else, but you can't rule it out,” said Camp, indicating that if he can find a new location, Trovato’s might reopen.

I've heard of it, never been there though. Not really a North of dodge person. Good luck to the owners!

Could this be fall out from the smoking ban? Sunday nights used to be standing room only before the ban.

I'm sooooooo SAD! I had no idea - we live in Dundee & just passed it last week saying how we would go there next time we got a adult night out. I just hate to see the mom & pops go! Trovato's is Dundee - they can't go anywhere else.

Dundee is changing so quickly now it seems. I still miss Dundee Hardware and the drug store at the corner. We have also gained a bank and an ice cream parlor. Hopefully another restaurant/bar will open there- but I am sure going to miss Trovato's.

WOW! Really sorry to hear this...in a part of town that so needs the businesses. I used to go there for the atmosphere and the weekend jazz! They had a white pizza that was to die for! Travato's is missed already...

I will certainly miss the white pizza! Also the low-fat veggie pizza...hopefully these recipes will find their way to another location...?

Best food in town, best bar in town, best music in town, best workers in town, best clientele in town. Never been so sad by a closing before.

It seems my good freinds, The Macklins, and Ms. Crosby made it to the last Trovatos feast. Ann, your words are so true. I've been in Omaha for 18 years now, and its always been Trovatos. And you got to meet Mr. Knicely on top of it all. How cool is that? Hope your meal was a good one.

I was very saddened when I read this story. I worked for John and Rena Trovato back when and I remember how busy it was then. Many regulars and a lot of new people would visit nightly. After John retired, they sold it. When the new owners started to make it "better" it just seemed like it was down hill from there. My mother also worked there and I know she will be saddened by this also. It use to be a wonderful place to go for the best Italian food in Omaha. But like so many of the older restruants, they have been overshadowed by the bigger and faster eateries in town. So sad.
