We Might As Well Hang It Up

It's been a successful summer for the Big O! First came the College World Series, then the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials.

But just as the city was taking a bow in the national spotlight a new AT&T commercial popped up referring to Omaha as Podunk -- a burg incapable of receiving good cell phone service.

That's an image the city has been fighting for years.

Even with all that's going on in Omaha some people who live outside the city still don't believe there is a city here at all. And now the phone people come along with their portrait of the River City as Hick Town USA.

Some of the folks at Val Couch's barber shop had opinions about that when we stopped by on Friday.

Val told us, "I think it's because a lot of people haven't been here before and for years we were the butt of jokes -- even in movies."

Sister Marilyn Ross said, "Recently my brother was in town from the east coast. He was delightfully surprised at what we have to offer in Omaha and the first thing I know he's giving quotes on how we're the number-three most livable city."

Omaha is booming. There's plenty to do here and our cell phones work just fine but dadgummit Zeke, yonder come them aspersions!

On the bright side, when all them thar smart folk set to a whackin' us wit the ugly stick, there's always the good Sister's wisdom of the comfort to be found in the serenity of our isolation.

"Does it make me angry? No. I don't want too many people coming here," she says with a hearty laugh to punctuate her sentiment.

That other sound you hear is no doubt the sound of the other cheek turning.

Charles, I totally agree. I saw the commercial again last night, and one would have to know where the Olympic swimming trials took place (and seriously, do many people pay attention that closely to it?) in order to catch on that they were trying to diss Omaha. As others have said, too, AT&T is not that great, anyway.

I saw this posted somewhere online. I honestly had no idea the commercial was related to Omaha until this article, and I still think that it's a stretch just because the girl in the commercial is obsessed with Michael Phelps. Besides, even if someone from outside Omaha would see that relation (and they wouldn't), they still would know that Omaha has good cell service. So, Omaha, you have nothing to worry about.

Rick, I totally agree. If you compare other companies coverage in Omaha to AT&T you will see they (AT&T) is a joke. I have Verizon (can I say that here?) and I have never dropped a call in Omaha in three years. Before that I had Sprint and they were fine as well. A co-worker of mine just bought the iPhone (proprietary to AT&T) and he wants to take it back because the service is so terrible (ex-verizon customer). Way to go AT&T!!

Posted by: Rick on Jul 27, 2008 at 08:06 PM
You know what the ironic thing is? I have AT&T service and for the most part its okay. But just ok. I lose signal in my basement in west omaha, and in the break room at my job. The commercial should say "she DOES have AT&T so she DOESN'T have any bars here" AT&T's own signal is not that great here in omaha. Mmm IRONY!

so belguim beer why do you hang around here then if we are hicks. Not everything in life has to be LA or NY glitz. There are major problems here but there are problems in other countries too--we lived in Germany when there were troubls with the youth there Stuff happens--in every city in every country,

It is extremely important to Omaha's survival that East and West Coast residents have a positive view of our city. We need people from California and New York moving here with millions in pocket from selling their hovels, and they've already been desensitized to paying high taxes! These people are Fahey's saviors, but thanks to one cell phone ad, he might be forced to give up plans to run again.

I agree with "b"... There is no reason why this should be a news story at all. Podunk towns have slow and uninteresting local news stories, just like this one. Ta-dah!

Posted by: BelgiumBeer on Jul 26, 2008 at 06:18 PM
The reality is that we live in a backward city with property taxes like nowhere and poor services, including schools. I hear the cliché that this is a ‘great place to raise kids and have a family’ and that is as far from the truth as it gets. Do you really think that Omaha is a ‘cool’ place? Try living in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) or Milan, Italy – forget about NY or LA. See what true diversity is like: have your kids at school interact with students from 77 nations… If you have lived in Omaha all your life then you are a hick. If you moved away from Omaha for a while and moved back to Omaha then you are not adaptable (and hence you are a hick). If you live here for other reasons than the cliché above then you know what I am talking about.

I will take little traffic, safe streets, and a small town like atmosphere anyday, and my skin is thick enough to be called po-dunk. We are improving on getting good arts and entertaiment offerings, and more sporting events. I wish I had the time and income to take advantage of them all, but some days there is almost too much to choose from. I love New York, but would be broke and overwhelmed by what it has to offer on an hourly, not to mention daily basis for arts, sports, etc. This fits me just fine for now. (that could change however, if taxes keep climbing)

The fact that tis was a lead story proves we are a podunk town.

Posted by: larry on Jul 26, 2008 at 09:36 AM
I would have to say it looks more like they are pointing the finger at themselves. It's not our fault that AT&T provides crappy service. Maybe that's why they are being bought!

Posted by: Steve on Jul 26, 2008 at 09:12 AM
Who really cares what the idiots on the East or West Coast think of Omaha. Do we really want them moving here? I DON'T THINK SO. I really don't care what they think. I would much rather live here than in NYC or California. On the subject of AT&T, they did install a tower two blocks from my house.

Posted by: B on Jul 26, 2008 at 09:07 AM
Obviously it's AT&T's problem. I can tell you for sure that Sprint works great.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 26, 2008 at 08:39 AM
There are problems with cell reception in western and central parts of the state, and remember the ad says Nebraska, not Omaha. They are putting up more towers all the time. But it is a STUPID ad with a bunch of dumb girls who look like they should be in highschool.

Check your "in city limits" populations around the country and you will find the the population of Omaha inside the actual city limits (430,000), not the surrounding area, is actually larger than the actual city populations of such places as Miami, Minneapolis, Pittsburg, Cincinatti, Kansas City,MO, St. Louis...They may have larger metro areas by being surrounded by dozens of smaller towns, but our actual city is larger.

I know the commercial they are talking about, which I thought at first viewing was idiotic, since it's for a cell phone company that has excellent coverage in Eastern Nebraska, & which is about to merge with a great cell phone company that has excellent coverage nationwide. Still, I did laugh...a lot of people hate that we are "Cow Town USA" but you know what, I kind of like it that way and I'm sure lots of Omahans feel the same way. Think about it...when watching a Husker football game on a nationwide network, what do they show? CORNFIELDS and the tractor testing facility on EAST UNL campus. Face it, folks...we're not Manhattan, we never will be (God willing), & for a lot of us, that's just FINE. Anyone see the episode of "Family Guy" when Stewie visits Nebraska? He's in a trucker cafe, asking if anyone has seen any good movies or read any good books. Everyone is silent until he asks "So, what's new with CORN?" & everyone starts talking at once. Sorry, that's US. Period. DEAL WITH IT

I can understand ATT's commercial. I have ATT for cell phone service and have found their service lacking. When my commitment is up with them I plan to turn in the phone and get a better service provider. Perhaps I can right now since they admit that their service here stinks.

I am a native of Omaha now living in Arkansas. I've visited Omaha several times since moving and have NEVER had problems with my cell phone. I'll be there again in a couple of weeks and I am not anticipating any problems with my phone whatsoever. I don't know who these people are that made this commercial, but they have the WRONG idea about Omaha.

I love the delicious sarcasm of this piece! Omaha is a fantastic city; we may not be able to brag about having Disney World just north of Dodge or lay claims to building "Mall of America Part II: The Apocalypse," but Omaha is a darn good city with a rich and unique artistic community and I'm proud to claim it as my "stomping ground!" Now if'n y'all excuse me, I gots to go watch me some NASCAR, drink me some Pabst, and meet my third cousins later in Farmer Jed's field for th' cowtippin' contest - first prize is a fancy AT&T puffy ballcap stuffed with CORN - yee-haw!!

Born and raised in the big O and still proud to admit it to anyone. Is it a metropolis NO but a very fine place to live and raise a family. I will never turn my back on the place I went from child to adult. As you notice I still have my eye on my city.

The key to success in Hollywood and on Madison Avenue is fabrication and truthbending. They feed off of the ignorance and perception of the viewing public. People will believe whatever they see on the big or little screen. I will take Omaha with it's good work ethic and hospitality any day over a trash dump like New York or Los Angeles.

I, too, had visitors from the east coast about a year ago. My friend was asked, prior to her visit, "why would you want to go to Nebraska? Isn't it just corn and cows there?" She was pleasantly surprised. We visited our fabulous zoo, the safari, and downtown. Now, she has plenty to tell people about more than cows and corn. And, this my friends, is why we chose to live in Nebraska!

I saw this commercial the other day and I was the only person in the room that took offense to the fact that MY cellphone company called my hometown Podunk. It's a tag that Omaha and the state of Nebraska as a whole are never going to shake until we as a state start to make the necessary changes to be one of the more respected in the country.

BOYCOTT AT&T! It's time for us to show those stuck up execs how large the Omaha market really is. BOYCOTT AT&T!

Posted by: Zeph on Jul 25, 2008 at 08:35 PM
Omaha is a big town. But in the grand scheme of things, it is small. Get some perspective of what a "big city" is and travel to Chicago,Denver or Minneapolis. Then you will understand why they call us hicks. If you don't like the sterotype, then move to one of the above mentioned cities. Please get out more.

Posted by: Jen on Jul 25, 2008 at 08:26 PM
Big deal. I don't mind "Podunk"; I kind of like that. Better than being known as Murder Capital, or Gangland, or Smog City, Slumville, or Plastic-Self-Absorbed-Deep-In-Debt-Poseur-Land! I'm not surprised at AT&T's depiction, actually. Their cell service here sucks canal water. Had them for a carrier briefly, switched to another carrier many years ago, and have been much happier since!
