Tiffany Spies traveled the world on a mission. The 18-year-old wanted to make a difference and in May, she packed her bags and joined eight friends on a trip to the Dominican Republic.
While on the trip, Tiffany suffered a devastating accident but it hasn't changed her inspirational view of the world.
Tiffany suffered 13 broken bones in her face.
"Never give up," she says. "And take joy in the little things."
That's a bright outlook considering what happened.
"The rock was kind of in the ravine and I just landed face first. They said I split my face in half."
Tiffany slipped in the jungle while playing with children.
"They said I broke every bone in my face except one. They said I was one bone away from the grand slam and if I would have broken that bone I wouldn't be here today."
Tiffany then survived a grueling air ambulance ride and a 17 hour surgery. Her face has since been reconstructed. She has 18 plates inside her head.
She says, "I was just excited to go and of course you never think something bad could happen."
Tiffany's mission isn't over. She'll return to the Dominican Republic to the children she loves and misses. She hopes that through telling her story, others will be inspired to work through the hardships in their lives.
