Hit-And-Run Crash

A suspect is in custody in connection with a hit-and-run accident Wednesday that left a Nebraska City woman critically injured. Aaron Anson was arrested late Wednesday afternoon.

The incident began when officials were notified of a white Mustang that had been stolen from Syracuse, Nebraska. A state trooper noticed the vehicle traveling south on Highway 50.

The trooper turned his cruiser around to get behind the Mustang as it began to speed up.

The driver of the Mustang then tried to pass a southbound Mazda pickup truck on the right. The Mustang cut back in front of the Mazda and clipped the front bumper of the truck.

The impact sent the Mazda spinning into the northbound lane of Highway 50 where it collided with a northbound pickup driven by 49-year-old Kimberly Cotton of Nebraska City. Ms. Cotton was critically injured and flown to the hospital by medical helicopter. The driver of the Mazda, 60-year-old Steven Williams of Papillion, was taken to Midlands Hospital with minor injuries.

As the two pickup trucks collided, the driver of the Mustang fled the crash scene.

Authorities lost track of the fleeing vehicle but it later turned up at 156th and Fairview. Stop Sticks were deployed at 84th and Fairview but the Mustang driver maneuvered around them, turned north on 72nd, then east on Capehart and eluded pursuing officers once again.

The Mustang turned up in a parking lot at 36th and Highway 370 where it hit another vehicle and headed north of 36th. The driver eventually ditched the car in a wooded area near 36th and the Papio Creek.

Authorities then found Anson walking in the area and took him in for questioning. He was later arrested.

Rick Hall said his Ford F250 was hit when the Mustang raced through the intersection of 36th and Twin Creek.

"I tried to steer clear and avoid him, but there was no way I was going to be able to do that," said Hall. "He was flying. He was flying."

Aaron Anson was booked into the Sarpy County Jail on the following charges:

  • Leaving the Scene Personal Injury Accident
  • Leaving the Scene Property Damage Accident
  • Willful Reckless Driving
  • Theft by receiving Stolen Property
  • Driving on the Shoulder
  • Flight to avoid Arrest
