It's been a big year at the Qwest Center, hosting March Madness and now the Olympic Swim Trials. Volleyball's Final Four comes later this year. Like the College World Series, national events mean visitors from out of town who are impressed with Omaha.

Omaha is certainly gaining attention in the sporting world, but how about the city itself? Most people seem to be pleasantly surprised about how Omaha is pulling off this event and what the city has to offer.

"I have to be honest I had to look at a map, I didn't know exactly where we were,” says Diana Sordo from Buffalo, New York, who has 16 family members here with her.

"People are friendly, they're fun, they're accommodating,” says Judy Casale, also from Buffalo. “It's been a great experience."

"It's very different than the Bay Area,” says Marisa Churchill of San Francisco, here with a friend. Good steaks don't interest them much. "We did find your Whole Foods and we're very happy there's a Whole Foods in Omaha,” says Cathy Huang of San Francisco.

"This is a great city to have it in,” says Sally Kastes from Clearwater, Florida. “I'm surprised, never in my life would I have thought coming to Omaha would be as nice as it is, but it's a great city."

City marketers take note, the plan of boosting Omaha's image through swimming seems to be working. "Thank you Omaha for a great time,” says Sordo.

Lori - you're doing an aweful lot of complaining about what the mayor does and does not do, why don't you run for mayor? Why don't you fix this city up? If you can't or won't do as good or better of a job, then you aren't allowed to complain. There's a reason you live in NW Omaha, because you can afford to spend money on a mulcher or a saw or something to cut your tree up, not all of Omaha has the disposable income that you do. Yes, I also live in NW Omaha, but I think with my head. You are the typical Omahan who isn't satisfied with the way things are being done but will not do anything to fix the predicament that they are in. All you have done is complain. You won't shovel the sidewalks because it takes too much time? Wow - that's showing off your "higher up" status than anyone else. Every other normal citizen would just bear it because it happens every year. Here's the alternative: you could wait until after the plows go by to shovel for the first time, see how you like that too.

Uh-HUH. No one can argue with the point I was making, in that Fahey PROMISES things and doesn't deliver. That sand should have been off the streets by the end of April at the LATEST. Instead, it's JULY and it's not swept up. Why don't the rest of YOU get off your butt and vote in a decent mayor? Lord knows I'VE TRIED. Why should I get a broom and clean the streets? Don't I pay taxes? Don't all of YOU? Personally I don't think the CITY should be hauling away tree debris. It's your house, it's your property, it's your TREE. Either cut it up and use it for firewood or rent a mulcher or get a friend with a pickup. TREES are not what we pay taxes for; STREET MAINTENEANCE and UPKEEP ARE. I suppose if your street isn't PLOWED next winter, you'll get a shovel and do it yourself. Because I know I won't...we have to spend too much time REshoveling the sidewalks the city plows shut.

To A - I think you are really narrow-minded. Have you ever been to the Safari part of the Zoo near Ashland? No? Okay, then don't say bad things about the zoo. You think that our zoo, even though some of the animals may be bored, is sub-par to others? I think i fyou stick an animal in an enclosed environment, they are going to be bored no matter how nice or expensive it is. Not everyone is into sports, but a good majority of people in Omaha are. A good amount of people enjoy the sporting events even if they don't enjoy the sport. I went to the Olympic swim trials and enjoyed myself and I don't know anything about swimming. You're way to narrow minded about not only Omaha, but about entertainment in general. You complain about everything Omaha has to offer, but I could find something wrong with everything other cities have to offer too. Omaha also offers free concerts pretty much every weekend, what's bad about that? I have never been able to figure out how someone can be so negative.

Steve, I'm sorry that you haven't enjoyed the benefits of living and learning in our community. I wish you success wherever you choose to go, isn't America a wonderful place. We have the freedom to live where we want. I wish you luck, because that's what we Omahans and Nebraskans do for others, we support them!

"People are friendly" - There is a reason that people aren't nice to you on the road - you're doing 10 mph under the speed limit while in the fast lane. Move over to the right two lanes and nobody would care how fast or slow you go. It's almost an unwritten rule that to be in the far left lane, you should do 5 over the speed limit, and last time I checked the speed limit on 680 was 60mph. Maybe you should have just been doing 65 and this wouldn't have happened.

I hope the people that said these great things about our city, never get on this web-site and read these comments. If they do they will never return and we will no longer be ranked 2nd or 3rd or whatever it is. The Headline will read more like this in the future, "Only City to go from the top 5 to out of the Top 100 in one year, Welcome to Omaha!"

Posted by: A on Jul 4, 2008 at 02:07 AM
I lived at and was born there (response to To A posted at 8:37 pm) and I have yet to see what those "wonderful" things you posted have anything over the same things that other more popular and vacation oriented cities have. The Henry Doorly Zoo..? I continue to support that place merely because I feel for the poor animals that are housed there. The pachyderm enclosure is far from adequate, and why do those poor big cats pace the cages as they do? Because they are bored out of their minds. I've seen far better in the zoo's elsewhere. Once again you bring up so many sports based activies, but not everyone is into sports as this state so fondly wishes to believe. Museums? Lincoln has better. SAC Museum? Try the Lexington battleship at Corpus Christi and the many others resting at port, also we don't have the only military based museum you know. Omaha has nothing worth mentioning over what true vacation desinations provide. And that's our problem.

In response to the post dated 01:53 PM. Those studies you refer to do not examine things that Omaha is weak at. I never said it didn't have strengths but there are several things that make this a pretty poor city to live in. Just because they're billing us doesn't mean that they are going to do a good job. It will just be like the streets where they do a temporary fix and within months we're right back to where we started. Pointing out a couple of bridges, is at best, misleading. I see you didn't really address any of my points, save the representation one (when that amount of money is to be spent, a direct vote should be taken). I'll be working all over this city during my rotations so I'll get to see how uneducated many Omahans are. But, you'll be guaranteed that I (along with the best of my class) will be jumping on the first flight out of here after graduation.

You must not live in the same Omaha, Nebraska that I do. There are MANY, MANY family destinations. The Henry Doorly Zoo is among the best in the nation. We have the SAC museum, the Omaha Childrens Museum, the Durham, the Rose, and Mahoney State Park and many beautiful local parks just to name a few. We also have major college baseball and basketball in Creighton and football with the Huskers and hockey with UNO. The Qwest, the Holland and the Orpheum all draw top entertainment. What (other than a theme park) is missing?

Maybe one of the visitors finding Omaha so nice would like to buy my house so I can leave? I'm moving to Missouri, home of decent property taxes and no State income takes on Social Security beginning 2009! It's been something, but I can't say a real pleasure living here!

I'm proud to be from Omaha. Just because some of you pesimists aren't sharp enough to see the beauty Omaha has to offer means we should be as pathetic and sad as you all. Thanks WOWT, great story, glad to know our hardwork is paying off.

I've lived in northern and southern Florida, Illinois, Louisiana and in England -- never in my wildest dreams would have I have imagined settling in Omaha. And I can tell you that I wouldn't change it for the world! Others have said this...and I echo it, there is no place like Omaha. Every town with a large population has issues -- crime, homelessness, graduation rates -- the difference is how Omaha addresses it...as a community. You don't see that in many cities and we are fortunate to still have the community feel that so many cities strive for. I'm not going to crucify anyone for disagreeing with me...that's the beauty of the freedom our country provides...but, I will also not be impacted by their negativity! I, for one, am incredibly proud that the Olympic Swim Trials are in Omaha and that people find Omaha a great place to visit!

Posted by: To Steve on Jul 3, 2008 at 01:53 PM
You complain about how bad our city is but you chose to go to med school here, so we must be doing something right. There was a new study out today that rated Omaha as the 3rd best place to accumulate a nest egg and another ranked us 2nd on the outlook for the future and our abilty to weather the current financial storm. TO say the infrastructure here is not being fixed means you must pay no utilities or drive downtown or out west. MUD had added a huge fee onto our bills so they can replace all of the sewer and water lines in the city. Downtown is getting all of the interstate bridges reworked and west O has the expressway. There are even talks of a light rail or trolley system going in downtown. The stadium was not voted on because we vote in representatives to do that for us, and the recall failed. PS: please let us all know where you will be working at because with such a close minded attitude I would NEVER want care from you, take two Advil and call me in the morning.

Posted by: A on Jul 3, 2008 at 01:23 PM
To "To A" I agree, yet they will label people whiners when they themselves are committing the same "travesty". People have their own opinions, and most of that opinion derives from experiences that one faces as they live in this ahem "wonderful" city. For many this place holds more burden then hope, and with the addition of worthless items such as a stadium etc it only adds to that negative pressure. If this state would work on things that would help it's people instead of hurt them even more, only then will people speak about Nebraska and Omaha without venom in their tone. Be honest, this state/city have little in the way of actual family destinations. There is very little reason for anyone from any other state that has theme parks etc to travel and spend gas money to come here. If something like that existed, and people did travel here more often then naught, then maybe we would lose that backroads Hick reputation everyone here despises.

*my views of the city* I dont get it...I freaken hate this city. People arent nice...ok maybe they are towards the out of towners, but I walk/drive around in public and people aint nice, their rude, the worse drivers, etc. Omaha just wants your money so yea they will be nice. Try living here. After the storms not a single neighbor came to help, not one. I say this to Delancey that put the citizens here has the ability to work together in crisis, hahahaha yea in a few parts of omaha. Id leave if I could without looking back. Oh, the zoo is great though.

My husband was stationed in NC and I loved the East Coast. Yes there is crime everywhere but Omaha has a serious gun violence problem. When we moved here last year I believe that there was a shooting a day for one whole month in the summer. That is scary and it seems to be happening again this year. To Delancey, that city in NC that "Mayberry" was based on is Mount Airy and it is a beautiful little town if you ever get out that way, check it out.

Posted by: Jon on Jul 3, 2008 at 12:11 PM
It's all political. The complaining will stop when we get a republican mayor. If you look close, all the negative coments probably come from the conservatives.

Posted by: Lori on Jul 3, 2008 at 12:06 PM
I think you missed my point. The point being, had last winter's sand and gravel been swept up back in APRIL as the Mayor made such a big deal of promising, it wouldn't still be ON the streets in the first place at the end of June to end up smeared all over the streets. And by the way, they did send a street sweeper down there this morning...I followed it into work.

An interesting collection of comments. Yeah, I know, I live in Bellevue so what do I know about Omaha? Get real. I work in Omaha, I spend $ in Omaha, I shop in Omaha. I, too, John Q., have lived other places and chose Omaha (Bellevue) as my final place to live. For you complainers, go live someplace like Turkey and see what you have to say. ANYPLACE you live is going to have issues; some the same, some different. You have to choose what you can live with and what you can't. Bottom line is that if you have too many "cons" and not enough "pros," it's time for you to pack up the minivan and get the hell outta here. Sure, you have the right to your opinion, but c'mon; some of you sound like you would complain if the hung you with a new rope.

Posted by: Delancey on Jul 3, 2008 at 11:31 AM
To Carol in NC...Omaha is a city and has the same issues as cities all over America and the UK for that matter! People are homeless and there is crime. What makes Omaha different than most cities is it's citizens ability to work together during times of crisis and extreme pride in their community. I haven't seen that in the UK or on the East coast of the US. Enjoy your time in Omaha Karen, but don't forget that you're not in "Mayberry". Which as I recall was based on a town in North Carolina!

Thanks for coming! Glad to have you. Hope you got a chance to visit the Zoo, Downtown, several malls, and many of the GREAT places to sit down and grab a great meal. We work hard to create such a great enviorment. We have our flaws; including a large amount of youth involved in gangs, homeless, and people that just don't care about their fellow man. But, like any city, we are trying to overcome them. I hope you have a great time, and hope you come back. I can assure you while our City Government is not always the most popular, they are working hard to develope a great city for us and you alike. Please take advantage of the numerous amounts of activity and culture, shutting the negativity some here have out of your mind, and continue to enjoy a great city. The CWS, the Volleyball championships, Swim Trials, and the first round of the NCAA March Madness tourny are all here for a reason. Omaha is a great sports city, as well as a good culture city. Enjoy your stay!

Being mad that someone is just complaining about something ridiculous is a little less of a problem than people blaming the mayor and dumping on Omaha for stuff that is not that big of a deal.

Posted by: To Steve on Jul 3, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Name 1 city that doesn't have problems, then start dumping on a positive note of this town. Trust me, I'll help you pack your bags when you leave. Don't find it funny WHY you are here, cos OMAHA HAS A LOT TO OFFER!

NO WAY! Someone in Omaha is complaining about something minor as if it was the end of the world?! Lori, how hard is your life if THAT is seriously such a problem for you?! Of course, Fahey's fault, like he really worries about that. No, HE DELEGATES minor stuff like that. Call the Mayor's hotline, I bet you haven't done that. You can complain and find some stupid reason to whine like a 3 year old, yet Im willing to bet $$$$ you didn't even call it in! If you call it in, guess what, it get's done. I emailed the Mayor himself, told him of some streets that were in bad shape, guess what, they got addressed. Get off your butt and grab a broom if you are SO WORRIED. Maybe you should realize the magnitude of the storm and the cleanup that is needed is a LITTLE more important than making it so you don't have to do the speed limit again. Kleenex please, Im crying at the difficulty that Lori's life is...

Posted by: Fahey's Fault on Jul 3, 2008 at 11:01 AM
Can you believe Fahey caused a terrible storm like this! Just to make it so we were without power, you know he's sending the power to his home, running those super computers that control the enviorment, just over Omaha of course. Oh yes, and let's not forget him causing all the cable outages, TREES!?! NO FAHEY!!! Let's ALL blame Fahey. Especially because that's all people seem to be able to do. Fahey did this, Fahey did that, yet, when given a chance to cause a recall election, 8K of you show up. Seriously, just move away, for the sake of sanity for those of us that can see past our noses, please just LEAVE. Wowt runs a story about people who DON'T LIVE HERE talking about how great Omaha is, and you people ruin it because you got some SERIOUS anger issues. Some of you need some serious help. Therpatist are pretty good at helping you lose such ridiculous anger. That anger is causing you to ignore reality and create your own. While fun for you, a severe annoyance on the MAJORITY! 8K, HA!

Did the thought cross your mind that MAYBE the city has a little bit BIGGER issues than you having to SLOW DOWN on Nw Radial Highway?! Really, if that is your biggest problem conisder yourself fortunate, meanwhile some of your fellow Omahan's don't have power yet. So continue to complain about something so trival.

Just to remind these burning optimists of where they live. 1) Yes the property taxes are high. The cost of living is lower but the taxes are not. 2) Only 55% of public high school students graduate. 3) Violent crime is out of control. It it going down nationally but here it keeps rising. 4) The stadium issue was decided without input from it's citizens. While I think it was nice it's still taxation without representation. 5) The infrastructure here is terrible and it appears that little is done to fix this for the long term. I could go on and on but these really illustrate why Omaha NE is worse than this article portrays. And yes, I'll be leaving as soon as I graduate medical school so don't throw out the leave card.

I have visited Omaha for the CWS and I am also now in town for the Swim Trials. Your downtown "Old Market" area is nice but I do see A-LOT of homeless people and it seems that everyday that I've been here there have been shootings. You tend to lose your Small Town charm with those couple of Big City issues.

To Karen: Do you complain like this at your job? The old saying "If you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all" might be applicable here. "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" might also apply, and "don't let the door hit you on the way out".

Posted by: A on Jul 3, 2008 at 02:39 AM
Everyone has a chance to express their opinion. And for those of you whining that people are doing just the same because they don't enjoy this boring city should take your own advice. You do realize that you are sounding the same as they are right? You are whiny Omahans just as well. This city isn't the greatest, and yes I have been elsewhere. There's no real entertainment beyond bars and sporting events which surprise, surprise, not everyone enjoys. There are no parks that stand out, and with the gas prices you people point out the obvious. Yet you're wonderful NE happens to be one of the most taxed of all states. Kinda levels the playing field. This state is hopeless as long as it's higher up's keep going on with their good "christian" morals and not their heads, allow things like casinos that will pay taxes into your state instead of relying upon and drying up your people's savings. Have we regressed to the middle ages?

Reading this story, then reading several of the comments, especially well paid Karen's, all I can think is, you must be those people who KILL a good vibe everywhere you are. You all probably bring up a horrible story of devostation right in the middle of upbeat conversation huh? Maybe that's why you have to spend your nights at home online, no one wants you around because you kill the mood with your misery. "Misery loves company" that phrase fits a good chunk of the population here...

Shocking, wowt runs a story that is a source of pride, something every Omahan should be like "ROCK ON!". Instead, that whinny Omaha nasal complaining comes out. My gosh, we must have it really rough here, "they dont pay the high taxes we do to entertain them", MOVE! For crying out loud, if it's SO EXPENSIVE here, MOVE! Try LA, REAL LOW COST OF LIVING THERE! My gosh. The NATIONAL average for gas is over $4, NOT IN NE, it's lower, and you still complain! You all need a rude awakening of reality, sadley that will never happen, cos you all stay here your entire lives. If you opened your eyes and realized a few things, you'd see Omaha was 3rd on a list of best places to live for a reason. Sadly, we could have been 1st but the people that did the list talked to a few of you, and got the impression Omaha has a problem with complaining. Especially about stuff that really isn't that bad at all. Any reason to complain for some of you, that is your lives...COMPLAINING! Sad, REALLY sad.

Omaha's really good at whinning and pretending they have it the worst. This past weeks storm was a good example, some well off folks were complaining hardcore all over the news because their DVR's, computers, and IPODs didn't work anymore. Poor you, get over yourselves. I love the city, but the citizens here really are babies. Seriously, go visit somewhere else for once, and realize how good we have it here. Go to Flint Michigan, go to any town outside New Orleans, or any other town struggling, then come back and tell me it's SO TERRIBLE here. You won't because you will see REAL problems. Some of you have the most pathetic complaints about Omaha, you want the City to clean your toliets too? Or will you just pay someone, then complain about Omaha on here some more? Boo hoo, you all have it so rough, we had the 1st round of the NCAA March Madness Tounry, what, NO CHAMPIONSHIP! Oh wait, I think theres a 2 sport limit for Championships in 1 city, cos we have 2 more. BOO HOO spoiled babies!

But could we GET a street sweeper to go down NW Radial Hwy to clear the sand and gravel that washed there during last Friday's storm...because ANOTHER of Mayor Fahey's "promises" to get the streets cleaned of the winter salt and sand, fell by the wayside? I feel sorry for any motorcyclists traveling that route...there's enough sand and gravel there to de-ice at least four city blocks next winter! I'm actually thinking it would take a city truck with a BLADE to clear that stretch. Tourists here have NO idea what it's like to live here year-round...potholes, street debris, parks not mowed...what have these people seen but the Old Market and downtown? Fahey's "pet projects", as it were. We're still watching winter sand wash into our storm sewer, and it's still coming..even though we've had PLENTY of rain.

No Steaks Huh? I am really glad they found the Whole Foods. It must have been the Nuts and Berries Fairy,or their Garmin. You know California is going to drop off into the ocean some day and then they are going to wish they were back in Omaha.

Rebecca, I see no benefits living here. The only reason I am still here is my employer pays me darn good money,

It's kinda funny but the big coastal cities people think we're totally "in the middle of nowhere" - yeah, we have a Whole Foods, and a Sullivan's, and more than one emergency room, and stoplights and movie theatres and even our own baseball team! I met a guy in Cape Cod once who whipped out a map to find Omaha when I said I was from there, and said he'd always wanted to go "rough it" by living out in the middle of nowhere. He seemed really stoked about the idea!

That's only because they don't have to live here.

"Anonymous", you don't HAVE to pay the high taxes here. You choose to live here. If you want to you are free to move. For some people the benefits of living here outweigh the taxes and other negatives.

People from out of town like this city because they can go home and dont have to pay the high taxes that we have to pay to entertain them.
