A Heartland family is grieving over the loss of their 19-year-old daughter, Melissa Rodriguez. Her alleged killer is her estranged boyfriend, 19-year old Mikael Lloyd.
Melissa’s parents recently sat down with Channel 6 News and shared their memories of their daughter and her plans for an unrealized future.
Melissa Rodriguez was ripped from her parents’ lives, now they’re left with only photos and memories.
"She wanted to be a lawyer, and she wanted to do creative writing, and most of all, she just said, "I just want to help people mom.” said Angie Rodriguez, “Melissa just took life and always wanted the fullest out of it."
Melissa's body was found Thursday in an open grave at Graceland Park Cemetery at 42nd and L Streets.
Police believe Mikael Loyd, an estranged, had murdered her and left her body there.
Her family is devastated.
"That hurt. That hurt to lose one of those, especially this middle one. She was such a good kid." said Adam Rodriquez, Melissa’s father.
Melissa’s family says Loyd was abusing her and she had recently taken steps to leave the relationship.
They say police issued a warrant for Loyd’s arrest earlier this month, but didn't catch him in time.
Angie Rodriquez said, "I called every day to the police station to tell the police where he was, and because of his rights, they couldn't get him, and then he was out and now my daughter is gone."
The family wants justice but for now, they're stuck left living a nightmare.
"We have to get through putting our daughter to rest, and that's going be the hardest thing that I will have to do in my entire life."
Loyd faces a first degree murder charge. Police originally picked him up on a domestic violence warrant pertaining to his alleged treatment of Melissa.
