In a matter of minutes Sunday afternoon, trees came down and power was cut to half of Plattsmouth by a powerful thunderstorm.

Most of the damage and most of the power outages occurred in the northern part of town. Moments after the storm passed, many residents ventured out to survey the destruction. Underneath some tree limbs sat a pickup belonging to Mark and Shelley Joslin. “It's hard to take right now,” said Shelley. “Yeah, it's sad."

Mark said there wasn't anything unusual about the storm. “Silver dollar-sized hail, high winds and heavy rain. And sure enough about 10 minutes later, the wind just picked up and the rain was just straight across, heavy rain."

The storm only lasted 20 minutes, too fast for most to react. "I wish I would have parked it down the road a little, that's what I thought. I probably should have put in the garage or something."

Other downed trees were strewn around town. Nebraska Public Power District crews got right to work. Cody Gunnels was among the majority. His power came on about an hour after the storm, but he had a much bigger problem on his hands.

"I came out to move the truck because the storm started hitting and went to get in it and I heard a crack and jumped out and seen a big ol’ tree limb through my window."

Although it may cost them, everyone was thankful no one was hurt. "It's all money that I guess I didn't plan on having to fix a windshield, but it is what it is I guess. I guess that's what you get when you live in Nebraska."

Hail larger than golf balls was reported near Auburn, Nebraska. Half-dollar-sized hail also fell in Nemaha and strong winds with speeds of 60-70 mph were clocked near Fremont. The roof of a barn was damaged in Shenandoah, Iowa.

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down in the Story County city of Huxley, Iowa about 7 p.m. Sunday. There were no reports of injuries or damage. Grundy County officials also reported a tornado touching down. Utilities reported power outages to nearly 9,000 Iowa customers Sunday night, including nearly 4,000 in Des Moines.
