Police have arrested an Omaha man for sexual assault in connection with two incidents at metro stores. He also faces federal child pornography charges.
Police say tips from the public led them to 26-year-old Jason Putney, who was booked on two counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child.
One of the incidents happened May 22nd at the SuperTarget at 178th and West Center Road where Putney allegedly approached a 12-year-old girl, touched her on the buttocks and then took off.
Surveillance cameras captured pictures of the suspect. At the time, Putney was wearing a monitoring device around his ankle. It was one of the conditions of his bond on the federal child pornography charges.
Putney is also charged in connection with a similar incident that took place April 14th at the Wal-Mart at 128th and L streets.
On April 8th, federal investigators indicted Putney on three counts involving the receipt, distribution and possession of child pornography.
Seized from his apartment were a computer, two hard drives, a digital camera and two DVDs. A conviction on the federal charges alone could get him between five and 20 years in prison.
Last week, Channel 6 News contacted Jean, who didn’t want her last name used. She's the mother of one of Putney's alleged victims. “She's very little, she weighs 72 pounds, she looks like an 8-year-old. She's a tiny girl."
The pair was in the SuperTarget when they split up looking for some sidewalk chalk. Jean was just feet away when her daughter was allegedly groped. Jean told her daughter's story to Channel 6 News in hopes it would make a difference.
What it did was encourage a 10-year-old girl and her parents to come forward, saying she was groped by a man at a Wal-Mart back in April, five weeks before Jean's daughter was touched inappropriately.
"In a way, I feel like our judicial system failed,” says the father of the 10-year-old victim. “This person was put out on bond with an ankle bracelet doing these types of things."
"She's been very brave and is ready to move on. As she grows up, goes to middle school and high school and on through life, I want her to know that no one has the right to touch you that way and if they do, this is the process you go through."
The 10-year-old picked Putney out of a photo lineup Monday night. "It's not something you wish on anyone and having it happen to your own child is heart wrenching," says the dad. "I feel for the parents of the 12-year-old. It's a sad situation for Omaha."
Jean's daughter was also able to point out Putney on the SuperTarget's security camera video. “She was just crying, she was hysterical." The tape is what led someone to call Omaha Police and give them Putney's name.
Both alleged store incidents happened in the early evening hours. We're told the type of monitoring device he wore allowed him to go to work and then go home.
Channel 6 News spoke with federal authorities about monitoring devices and global positioning capability. Some monitoring devices have real time capabilities. The device Putney was wearing did not.
We've also learned there may be many more victims, including a 21-year-old woman who looks a lot younger.
