Police have arrested an Omaha man for sexual assault in connection with two incidents at metro stores. He also faces federal child pornography charges.

Police say tips from the public led them to 26-year-old Jason Putney, who was booked on two counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child.

One of the incidents happened May 22nd at the SuperTarget at 178th and West Center Road where Putney allegedly approached a 12-year-old girl, touched her on the buttocks and then took off.

Surveillance cameras captured pictures of the suspect. At the time, Putney was wearing a monitoring device around his ankle. It was one of the conditions of his bond on the federal child pornography charges.

Putney is also charged in connection with a similar incident that took place April 14th at the Wal-Mart at 128th and L streets.

On April 8th, federal investigators indicted Putney on three counts involving the receipt, distribution and possession of child pornography.

Seized from his apartment were a computer, two hard drives, a digital camera and two DVDs. A conviction on the federal charges alone could get him between five and 20 years in prison.

Last week, Channel 6 News contacted Jean, who didn’t want her last name used. She's the mother of one of Putney's alleged victims. “She's very little, she weighs 72 pounds, she looks like an 8-year-old. She's a tiny girl."

The pair was in the SuperTarget when they split up looking for some sidewalk chalk. Jean was just feet away when her daughter was allegedly groped. Jean told her daughter's story to Channel 6 News in hopes it would make a difference.

What it did was encourage a 10-year-old girl and her parents to come forward, saying she was groped by a man at a Wal-Mart back in April, five weeks before Jean's daughter was touched inappropriately.

"In a way, I feel like our judicial system failed,” says the father of the 10-year-old victim. “This person was put out on bond with an ankle bracelet doing these types of things."

"She's been very brave and is ready to move on. As she grows up, goes to middle school and high school and on through life, I want her to know that no one has the right to touch you that way and if they do, this is the process you go through."

The 10-year-old picked Putney out of a photo lineup Monday night. "It's not something you wish on anyone and having it happen to your own child is heart wrenching," says the dad. "I feel for the parents of the 12-year-old. It's a sad situation for Omaha."

Jean's daughter was also able to point out Putney on the SuperTarget's security camera video. “She was just crying, she was hysterical." The tape is what led someone to call Omaha Police and give them Putney's name.

Both alleged store incidents happened in the early evening hours. We're told the type of monitoring device he wore allowed him to go to work and then go home.

Channel 6 News spoke with federal authorities about monitoring devices and global positioning capability. Some monitoring devices have real time capabilities. The device Putney was wearing did not.

We've also learned there may be many more victims, including a 21-year-old woman who looks a lot younger.

Here's my question though. What about when someone knows that somebody destroyed property of theirs at a particular place that has security cameras, the guy is on the security camera, the person whose property was destroyed knows who he is, but the cops wouldn't do anything. I know it's different than catching a child molester, but shouldn't this kind of thing be acheived for ALL criminals?

Posted by: tweety on Jun 4, 2008 at 05:39 PM
My only concern is how did this guy do these things when he was supposed to be monitored...well the ankle bracelet only tells them where he is, right? Not what he's doing. Maybe they need a bracelet with a little camera on it. This guy shouldn't have been out where he could be doing this anyway.

So J form Bennington. So You are a financial advisor and have a high ranking position in each of these companies that have since moved west of there locations was because of crime.J as a business man why Wcouldn't it be that the income demographics is why the busines have moved. Since I live Behind the 72nd development and have talk to a couple of the people who managed at least 2 of these stores, have claimed that those businesses have been running in the the red for nearly a decade. Do you know what that means in the business world. When it comes to business the thing that matter most is where the numbers are at either red or black. I had a clothing store on north 24th street since 2003 and The only thing I worry about is Debt vs profit. No store closes cause of break ins and shoplifting. If a business has crime but is still very profitable, and is well in the black, that business will stay Just like Walgreens and other businesses that have been operating for a decade or more.

GOOD!! I'm glad they caught this dude!!!!

Posted by: SM on Jun 4, 2008 at 01:48 PM
I with Bo Ball. He might of made it out of the store, but he would have never made it to court! Who cares about him and his past... To bad hanging isn't still legal, we could fing him a nice lil' spot in the middle of The Big "O" and people from all around could come and watch.

Posted by: sherry on Jun 4, 2008 at 12:59 PM
This guy is only 20 somthing and he's committing these crimes. What will he be like by the time he is 50 somthing. It will only get worse. I hope he is locked up for a long time, but I worry about what might happen when he gets out. Hard to "cure" guys like this.

Posted by: Adrian on Jun 4, 2008 at 12:29 PM
I am so tired of paying taxes for all these people to sit in jail! GET REAL... send them to iraq! As for the chimos... give my husband 2 mins with all of them and theyll be takec care of! ;)

In my Scout troop, there was a young man who was always "covered up". Always respectful. Always a loner. And always a little odd. His father was definitely odd. I thought the entire situation stank to high heaven, but didn't have enough to report the father to CPS or even to the Scout executive. I did my best to make sure that boy had a good experience in Scouting - always in the presence of 2 adults. About 6 months ago, that Scout's name showed up in connection with a child porn arrest in Lincoln. Now, go back over some of the posts here ("Shanon", "Not a Criminal") and the like. See any similarities? This DOES NOT excuse Jason Putney from groping little girls nor from child porn and if he'd touched my granddaughter, well . . . but it might lend credence to the supposition that something BAD happened to Putney when he was growing up.

Im glad to see him caught, and to the comments about West O & North O... People! Things like this can happen anywhere, and they should be treated the same. people should call in the tips anywhere in town. Focus, on the fact that this guy could have continued to do things like this if he wasnt caught. Dont start with the N.O and W.O issues.

Posted by: Ed on Jun 4, 2008 at 11:39 AM
Weird, lots of shootings in North O, and a disproporionate amount of sicko molester types are popping up in Millard.

Posted by: Joe on Jun 4, 2008 at 11:29 AM
He needs to be executed for his crime. Also the judge that let him stay out on bail when he got the federal indictment for child porn. That judge needs to be punished for stupidity and voted out of his office.

Posted by: Dave on Jun 4, 2008 at 11:28 AM
As long as we continue to look at the city as just different neighborhoods, we are not going to work together to reclaim our city. There is crime everywhere in this town. It's not just a North Omaha thing. Remember, when you point a finger at someone, you're pointing four back at yourself. Pull together!!

Posted by: JJ on Jun 4, 2008 at 10:32 AM
IN REPLY TO "NOT A CRIMINAL" IF HE IS ONLY SICK HAVE YOUR KIDS KEEP HIM COMPANY UNTIL HE GETS BETTER. HOW IS THAT?

Posted by: llr on Jun 4, 2008 at 10:12 AM
He BETTER be held WITHOUT bond this time...obviously even wearing a monitoring device didn't stop him from molesting children. What a total perv.

Posted by: Jake on Jun 4, 2008 at 09:18 AM
First, I completely agree with Bo Ball! Next, I have said it once, I'll say it again: How long will we as a society put up with these creeps? The justice system is a joke! Punishment NEEDS to fit the crime. Put this punk in a room with a father or two. Justice WILL be served!

Posted by: Gunnar on Jun 4, 2008 at 07:56 AM
to NOT A CRIMINAL: you're kidding, right? Only help this guy needs is a punch in the face from an angry father. I have a daughter and that is how I would react to this dillweed.

Posted by: Bob on Jun 4, 2008 at 07:49 AM
So this guy had child porn huh, on his computer?!? stalking a kid or two online maybe?!? Does the Target family still think allowing their 12 yr old a Myspace account is still a good idea? Looks like his activities weren't limited to random public outings!

Posted by: Bo Ball on Jun 4, 2008 at 01:26 AM
This guy wouldn't have made it out of Target if this was my daughter he groped. His birth certificate would've been null and void.

Posted by: C on Jun 4, 2008 at 12:17 AM
yea, he worked with my best friend who has a baby and another one on the way omg why would he does this gez... this makes me so sick, im glad we got him! Thanks!

Posted by: shanon on Jun 3, 2008 at 10:47 PM
Umm,CS,I think that was the point I kinda made in my post.I think alot of people in west Omaha are going to recognize him aswell and if this is true this has been going on for along time because he was literally walking around everywhere for sometime now and his feild was in customer service.

Posted by: vlc on Jun 3, 2008 at 10:03 PM
I would think that this was a gradual escalation of his actions which could eventually have resulted in the molestation of a child. He is a sexual deviant who needs jail time for his crimes and some serious therapy also. He is acting on impulses that he cannot control and would probably get worse. Glad he is off the streets.

Posted by: first name on Jun 3, 2008 at 09:51 PM
my boyfriend worked w/ this guy and always said he was a little off his rocker. thank goodness he is off the streets for now. maybe he can get some help!

Posted by: mTm on Jun 3, 2008 at 09:43 PM
Agree with Bill. JMD will taake the case to increase his TV time. JMD will say he was beginning to get his life together. He'll them blame the girls, the parents and spin it to where his client is a victim. We all know that all of JMD's clients are the victims and he's Superman.

Posted by: mTm on Jun 3, 2008 at 09:40 PM
Do away with this loser before he does something worse.

Posted by: CS on Jun 3, 2008 at 09:21 PM
Shanon - As nice as you make this guy sound, one doesn't just turn into a pervert one day out of the blue. I would be willing to bet he's been behaving this way for a long time. Losing his mother, if this is true, is sad, but not an excuse to go around town getting a cheap thrill grabbing little girls. If he was any kind of normal human being, he would have a normal adult relationship and leave the kiddies alone.

Posted by: shanon on Jun 3, 2008 at 08:24 PM
Wow,I knew Jason 4 years ago and ran into him recently in the grocery store.I would have never in a million years seen him as this way and I am shocked! He was a loner and walked everywhere and always was covered up which I found odd in the middle of the summer, but as well he was very respectfull and a hard worker.I know he was very close to his mother and she passed away and it was very hard on him but I cant see what that would have to do with this.

Posted by: ANON on Jun 3, 2008 at 07:34 PM
CASTRATION! Him and the rest of the perverts. Castrate them and then you can put them back on the streets by costing the taxpayers way less money then putting them away for years. How much does it cost to have the urges removed? How much does it cost to house feed and clothe them for 1-10?

Posted by: Keith on Jun 3, 2008 at 07:14 PM
What a sicko; I hope they convict him and give him maximum, consecutively-served sentences for every count. To Steve in Ponca: I always get a chuckle when I see your posts. After all, Ponca is the original "yuppie suburb" of Omaha -- for the Florence folk who found that the rabble were getting too close to them, so they headed to the hills. You crack me up. But then, I am usually amused whenever I encounter a mixture of ignorance and arrogance such as you are.

Posted by: steven on Jun 3, 2008 at 05:51 PM
this is great to see that they caught this sick individual. they need to put him in jail for a long time especially since this is not his first offense, i pray he gets a lot of time for this so he can not hurt anyone else. if i met this guy, believe me he would be unrecognizable because a chimo is the lowest form of life. rot in hell, you worthless waste of space, where you belong

Posted by: K on Jun 3, 2008 at 05:07 PM
Glad he was caught before he took it a step further. The story says sentence is a minimum 5 years which means he'll be out in 2.5. But hopefully he'll have a "real time" monitor after that.

Posted by: T on Jun 3, 2008 at 04:45 PM
As I suspected, this is not the first time this guy has "interfaced" with the court system. Want to bet he pleads out, is sentenced to a few years, then is paroled early?

Posted by: Bill on Jun 3, 2008 at 04:23 PM
I have a feeling James Martin Davis will take this case. Was he trying to get his life back together. T

Posted by: Fred on Jun 3, 2008 at 04:21 PM
I think people like this should get no mercy from the courts. He is an adult and shouls know right from wrong. I have 4 biological children, and 4 " step " children, and if I ever saw someone touch one of them in a bad way, I can only pray the cops get to him before I do. I dont think i could show mercy.

Posted by: larsen on Jun 3, 2008 at 04:10 PM
Does this really have anything to do with West o or North O? As a father of 3 young kids i am really glad this guy was caught. Now to set an example by giving him some serious time would make this story a positive for All of "O".

Posted by: Been There on Jun 3, 2008 at 04:02 PM
To Steve-This guy was not firing a gun at these girls-he's a perv, from West O. Anyone would turn a pervert in-would you turn a gangster in who's threatening you or your child, because when you do there's another one at your back door.Don't speak untill you've walked in their shoes.Crimes have no boundaries!!!

Posted by: Reality on Jun 3, 2008 at 03:26 PM
He seems like a good, clean cut kid from the picture. I thought it could probably be a misunderstanding until I saw he was charged in April with some crimes involving kids. He kind of looks like that John Mark Karr (the psycho who said he had something to do with JonBenet's murder).

Posted by: anonymous on Jun 3, 2008 at 03:26 PM
a good thing has happened here. We got a bad guy off of the streets. quit being hateful to each other. nobody cares where you live. get off your high horses. thank you opd for doing a good job!

Posted by: cece on Jun 3, 2008 at 03:17 PM
Steve in Ponca...shame on you for being glad that crime is happening anywhere. You only aid in the stereotyping of North O vs. West O.

Posted by: Clark on Jun 3, 2008 at 02:22 PM
To Steve: When a community works together and looks out for one another, it makes a big difference. All in Omaha could learn from this example.

Posted by: Biff on Jun 3, 2008 at 01:54 PM
Steve from Ponca: I, for one, am not naive enough to think all of the crime is in North O. Having said that, you gotta admit there are some pockets of town in which "even if you ask, I won't tell" is the mantra. If the truth hurts, Steve, wear a helmet.

Posted by: NOT A CRIMINAL on Jun 3, 2008 at 01:54 PM
WHY WOULD A 26 YEAR OLD DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS? MY BET IS THAT HE WAS MOLESTED WHEN HE WAS A CHILD AND IS NOW ACTING ON IMPLUSES THAT HE CAN'T CONTROL. HE NEEDS HELP AND PROFESSIONAL COUNSELING, NOT JAIL.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 3, 2008 at 01:32 PM
for you guys to say west o steped up and north omaha needs to. wow People in North Omaha are dealing with MURDERS If You give Info in a Murder case you have no choice but to testify in court. You tell me who are you more scared of a child molester or a Mur

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 3, 2008 at 01:26 PM
Hope its the right guy, guilty until proven innocent?

Posted by: J on Jun 3, 2008 at 01:20 PM
Steve from Ponca - I remember when North O had retail shopping. I remember when the stores closed because of break-ins and shoplifting. Now they're all out on 72nd & Sorenson. The Target there has a security guard when you walk in. Same with the Home Depot. I could mention the problems at the movie theater, the Target and the I-Hop there last summer. Don't recall a whole lot of North O community outrage that these entertainment/shopping/dining outlets are being threatened by the same original activities that forced their removal 3 1/2 miles west. I'd be upset; there are a lot of good people in North O, Florence and yes, Ponca that don't deserve to be forced to drive to West O for all their shopping and entertainment because of a few bad characters. I think that community involvement is what is needed to *remain* a community, and that is the point that some people were trying to make.

Posted by: Les on Jun 3, 2008 at 01:14 PM
Hopefully he won't get off w/ a slap on the wrist. Remember the softball coach, Mike Govig, who had TONS of child porn on his computer, all he got was 5 years...

Posted by: BJ on Jun 3, 2008 at 01:13 PM
This young man needs help. The internet and easy access to the porn world is really hurting our children. I know its a choice to look or not but hormones run rapid in our young people and this really needs some kind of control. The federal Government needs to step in on this industry. Or god help us!

Thanks to the Childs Victim Unit with OPD, and to the person who sent in the tip! This creep in off the streets!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 3, 2008 at 12:00 PM
West O did give the information. I called in and gave it and I live in West O, and so does the suspect.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 3, 2008 at 11:31 AM
I'm really glad they were able to get him... I was worried they didn't take the tips I sent in seriously. Thank you OPD.

Posted by: Steve on Jun 3, 2008 at 11:15 AM
To Steve from Omaha..."nice to see West O stepping up & providing info.?" WHAT ? ? ? What makes you think it was WEST O that gave the information? "North O should follow in their footsteps?" YOU are THE TYPICAL stereotype person who thinks it's all North O's fault that crimes go unsolved. Both of these instances happened in WEST O & I'm actually quite glad it did based on the fact that you yuppies think that crime has no boundaries. I feel sorry for the girl, glad this thug punk got caught & now we can all take a deep breath & relax. But as far as your comments go, STAY OUT IN WEST O YOU YUPPY ! ! ! Quit crackin' on North O ! Your day will come :)
