A 12-year-old girl is shaken up after being assaulted in an Omaha SuperTarget. A man groped her and managed to get away before store personnel could stop him.
"She's very little, she weighs 72 pounds, she looks like a 8-year-old, she's a tiny girl," says Jean, the girl’s mother who agreed to talk so something like this wouldn't happen to anyone else.
Jean and her daughter were shopping in the SuperTarget at 178th and West Center when a man came up to the girl and groped her. She ran to tell her mom. "I said, your face? And she goes, no my butt, and she was just crying, she was hysterical and I'm just like paralyzed."
He managed to get away, but the girl pointed him out to police on the store's surveillance tape.
What may be most frightening is where this took place. The girl was in an aisle filled with games and activities for pre-teens and teenagers. Jean thinks the man was targeting young people.
"I can't imagine why somebody who's 24 would be in that aisle. I can't imagine any of my big kids being in that aisle for any reason. There's nothing unless you're a teacher buying school supplies or a parent."
Jean says the whole ordeal has changed her little girl, made her frightened and less sure of herself. She's still a little withdrawn and scared to be alone.
"When she got home she wouldn't sleep in her own room, she had to sleep with me and the next night I had to work and she wouldn't stay home by herself. I think she's kind of lost trust in people."
There are some signs of a recovery. The girl is using her MySpace page to warn friends.
Jean praised store management for taking the threat seriously, searching the lot and trying to track down this man. Police have not released the store security video.
