Two Omaha neighborhoods are dealing with vandalism. Car tires were slashed with a knife around 37th and Dodge while yards were driven through at 54th and A. For some, this wasn’t the first time their property has been damaged.
It's so bad many don't want to fix the flat tire knowing that until there's an arrest, the vandals will probably strike again. "This will be the third time for me,” says Larry Nelson. “I've lived here 40 years and ain't never had a tire cut until now."
"I’m sure a lot of people were late to work that day,” says another victim, Candice Bendig. "There's probably 12 cars, 13 cars that got slashed. Look down the street."
Nelson's had to replace five tires. "They got that back one Wednesday and then they got the front one last night.”
At about the same time, another Omaha neighborhood experienced an equally disturbing problem. Someone driving through a bunch of yards, only this is more long-term.
"I just wished they'd catch 'em,” says Dee Bayer, who didn't hear the driver tear through her yard around 1 a.m. “They can't have respect for anybody."
Burned rubber marks the sidewalk. For weeks, 12 different residents will be reminded of the damage every time they mow. "I keep threatening to buy a bunch of rocks, big boulders and put them in the corner,” says Bayer.
With the vandals in both cases still out there, at least neighbors can lean on each other. "I helped a lot of them,” says Nelson. “My back is sore from helping neighbors change them."
This type of crime pops up more in warm weather. Residents say they were told by police that this area will receive special attention.
