Two Omaha neighborhoods are dealing with vandalism. Car tires were slashed with a knife around 37th and Dodge while yards were driven through at 54th and A. For some, this wasn’t the first time their property has been damaged.

It's so bad many don't want to fix the flat tire knowing that until there's an arrest, the vandals will probably strike again. "This will be the third time for me,” says Larry Nelson. “I've lived here 40 years and ain't never had a tire cut until now."

"I’m sure a lot of people were late to work that day,” says another victim, Candice Bendig. "There's probably 12 cars, 13 cars that got slashed. Look down the street."

Nelson's had to replace five tires. "They got that back one Wednesday and then they got the front one last night.”

At about the same time, another Omaha neighborhood experienced an equally disturbing problem. Someone driving through a bunch of yards, only this is more long-term.

"I just wished they'd catch 'em,” says Dee Bayer, who didn't hear the driver tear through her yard around 1 a.m. “They can't have respect for anybody."

Burned rubber marks the sidewalk. For weeks, 12 different residents will be reminded of the damage every time they mow. "I keep threatening to buy a bunch of rocks, big boulders and put them in the corner,” says Bayer.

With the vandals in both cases still out there, at least neighbors can lean on each other. "I helped a lot of them,” says Nelson. “My back is sore from helping neighbors change them."

This type of crime pops up more in warm weather. Residents say they were told by police that this area will receive special attention.

Catch them, slap their hand, and let them go out that revolving door in juvenile court.I know this is America and we are a civilized nation and being too firm on someone for their criminal actions is unconstitutional but if we dont we all suffer as a free nation. Some one at some point will catch one of these punks and someones going to get shot.

My car go stolen. Luckily I got it back. I f I catch them they are going to be so sorry!! I am tired of this! I help my neighbors as well. I keep an eye our from 12-5am. I would not hesitate to hurt them.

What about a hard-to-see electric fence across your driveway? I'm with Bruce, I would love to catch these punks in the act. At least so far in our neighborhhod, all they're doing is destroying the park's playground equipment and blowing up the trashcans with M80s...or M-160s if there is such a thing. And no one's been able to catch them at THAT, either, and we're a family that usually goes to bed pretty late.

Bruce- Your idea sounds great, but in todays world if you did anything you'd be the one in trouble, you could even be sued by the kids or their families depending on what happends.

It really won't do much if the kids get caught, they will just get a slap on the wrist anyhow. I think alot of these out of control kids is the result of no discipline. Kids today get their way.

Unfortunately, I am afraid that catching these punks is very difficult. My neighbor and our pickup trucks had drivers side windows shattered last weekend (south of 24 & Q). There's not much that can be done. These punks have no respect for anyone or anything, including themselves. If they did, they wouldn't go around destroying other people's property. Go to school, get a job, get a life!!!

Just another example of bad kids and bad parenting.

Maybe it's time to push the Neighborhood Watch progam again. The police cannot be everywhere. Maybe if we took turns sitting on our front porch for an hour or two in the evening we could nail some of these vandals. I see posts all the time from people who get home from work at 1-2AM; instead of jumping into bed, sit on your porch or stoop for an hour or so. Most of us have to work during the day but it gets expensive replacing tires or reseeding a lawn and who knows what else these punks are doing so maybe staying up for awhile and taking the morning off isn't such a bad idea. Boulders are a good idea but chances are if they hit it with their car, they would sue you.

I would just stay up overnight and catch them and nail them.

Sounds like some bored kids need something constructive to do. Might I suggest jobs in auto care and lawn service to learn the damage they've done and to pay for the damage. I think we could throw in there replacing the tires and planting grass seed for their victims.

Buy those boulders, put'em in your yard, and paint them black!

No citizen it most certainly happened, but without any witnesses to describe any suspects and or suspect vehicles, there are no leads to follow up on. The way it has gone down in the past with these kind of cases is that these idiots will be caught in the act and then can be tied to all the other incidents. Citizen, if you have any info or ideas on how the police are supposed to give this "any attention" please share.

Something similair happened in our neighborhood in council bluffs saturday, they smashed out the back windows of 10-15 cars. Very frustrating.

Posted by: citizen on May 19, 2008 at 05:23 PM
And in OPD's mind it never happened, and won't get any attention.
