Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson announced legislation Monday to name Omaha's new FBI headquarters in honor of the late Nebraska Senator and Governor, J. James Exon.
Nelson and Sen. Chuck Hagel are co-sponsoring the legislation to name the FBI field office now under construction at 120th and L after Exon.
Nelson is quoted in a news release as saying, “I can’t think of a more appropriate person to name this building after than Jim Exon, and not just because he served the people of Nebraska with distinction for more than a quarter of a century. It was his vision and pioneering legislation more than a dozen years ago when he was in the Senate that made sure the FBI has many of the tools it uses today to police the Internet against child predators and child pornography.”
Senator Exon and his family are more than worthy of this honor,” Senator Hagel is quoted as saying.
"We just want to again say thank you, this is an honor befitting a great statesman and of our father,” says Exon’s daughter Candy Wolf.
The new field office, being built by Noddle Companies of Omaha, will provide the FBI with more security and 112,000 square feet of space which is about double the amount of space available at its existing headquarters at 10755 Burt. It will be ready for occupancy in the spring of 2009.
Exon served two terms as Nebraska’s Governor from 1971 to 1979 and three terms as U.S. Senator from 1979 to 1997. He passed away June 10, 2005 at the age of 83.
