    Exploratory committee formed

Former Mayor and Congressman Hal Daub has formed an exploratory committee as he considers a bid to run for his old job. Daub says Omaha faces serious financial challenges and needs experienced leadership.

Daub has most recently served on the MECA board which oversees the Qwest Center and other city venues such as the Orpheum Theater. As Mayor, Daub is generally credited with moving riverfront development forward after decades of inaction.

After first winning a special election to fill out the term of P. J. Morgan who resigned, Daub was reelected to a full term. In the later part of his term Daub and the Omaha City Council had a somewhat cantankerous relationship. Several members of that Council and Daub all lost in the ensuing election.

Daub has a Web site up in support of a mayoral bid. The Daub camp can be reached by phone at 339-DAUB.

Omaha will hold municipal elections in May of 2009.

Daub's entry in the race could potentially set up a rematch with Mayor Mike Fahey, a Democrat. Daub lost the 2001 mayoral election to Fahey.

Fahey is considering a bid for a third term.

The mayor says, "I think it's the height of democracy when you have more people involved in any race. I certainly welcome him in. Hal's a good public servant. I think the race will be more interesting with Hal in it."

Several Omaha city councilmen are also considered potential candidates for mayor, as is state Senator Brad Ashford.

Daub is pushing 70 years of age and just to refresh the memory of Omahans - he lost his last election and one week after he announced he was running for the U.S. Senate he withdrew. I wish he would have stayed in the Senate race and let the people decide if he was the man for the job. His withdrawal from the Senate race give me pause to think that he was aware he could not win. Please Hal - enjoy your retirement years. You have worked hard for Omaha and Nebraska and now it's time to retire and enjoy your life with your wife, children and grandchildren. Why would you want this crappy thankless job anyway? I wish you the best.

Mr. Daub is the definition of a visionary and he will have my vote in '09. At this point, the infrastructure and crime problems of this city need massive attention. Our streets are garbage and crime is out of control for a city this size.

Hal Daub is 67 years old. He'll be 68 next year and if he hypothetically wins, he'll be 72 by the time his term is up. Omaha needs a younger mayor. A Mayor is a spokesperson for the city and we need someone younger for this important position.

Daub is a visionary and has passion for Omaha. I am sure he has thought of his fture plans for Omaha and what his visions are, and what the citizens want. He will be a Mayor for the People and for the city. Unlike Fahey. To Fahey on his running for re-election, WISE UP FAHEY! You do not stand an ice cubes chance in hell of becoming reelected to be Mayor of Omaha again! So, save your campaign re-election money. You'll need it when you retire in Florida.

Ernie??? You want a mayor that wants to Sue GOD????? Me thinks there are better choices for the betterment of Omaha, and I don't mean Duab/Fahey either!

Posted by: Mary Location: Omaha on May 20, 2008 at 07:23 AM
Hal couldn't possibly leave Omahans out of the picture as Fahey did. We had NOTHING to say about ANYTHING. Decisions were made by him and then he TOLD us what is going to happen. We tax payers want a voice!!!!!

Ernie Chambers would be a good choice. He will fight for the people and not be influenced by greed and kickbacks. Ernie is the man to lead Omaha.

Omaha as well as evey other city in this country need new leadership. Same politicians, same lies. Its time for a political "oil change".

Daub for Mayor??? An ex congressman has experience in spending your money and he will spend about twice as much as King Fahey, Get a common housewife or a non- millionaire, that understands what a budget is! Just get anybody that does not understand politics, then you will have a Great Mayor! Good Luck!!!

Posted by: M Location: Omaha on May 19, 2008 at 09:29 AM
I might vote for Daub just to anger the current leaders. I do not believe that Daub was a wise leader when it came to spending or covering up a problem of hazardous waste. I do think he allowed people to vote on the Qwest was a positive note on his part. But I too would like to see someone new to choose to lead. Someone not catering to corporate greed but seriously trying to make a better city. Does someone exist like this? Yes. Is there anyone who wants the job?? Not without an agenda unfortunately. I do believe that NOTA None of The Above should be incorporated in all of our elections nationwide, this would help get everyone involved, if they really thought their opinion mattered. Our country is suffering from BAD LEADERSHIP, I have yet to hear one candidate know running speak without an a personnal agenda in the background. People they owe favors to, our just a lack of real concern for the world we live in, not the fairy tales they weave about their greatness or plans.

Steve Jackson.. And Fahey is not an example of useless politics? They are both unfit.

Well since no one wants Daub or Fahey for mayor any suggestions?????

I'll vote for ANYBODY vs Fahey!

Posted by: Dracula Location: Omaha on May 17, 2008 at 08:16 PM
Count Daubula is wasting his time and money by running for Mayor. This city needs someone who is honest and actually cares about Omaha and not their own agenda. Daub is not that person. Fahey isn't either.

Posted by: Steve Jackson Location: Omaha on May 17, 2008 at 11:52 AM
I surely hope that Omahans do not vote for this guy. We've had more than our share of his useless politics. Really, I wish he'd just fade into oblivion as a bad memory in Omaha's Mayoral history.

Posted by: J Location: Bennington on May 17, 2008 at 08:21 AM
@"To J, 2:30": You must have a short memory. Daub annexed a LOT. Fahey's one big annexation was Elkhorn. He even campaigned on the reduction in annexations. You must not read my posts on a regular basis. Fahey is NOT my hero. Nor is he my mayor. :) Too bad Brad Ashford just dropped out. I follow Omaha politics very closely because I grew up in Omaha, I have family in Omaha, and what Omaha does affects the rest of the county.

Posted by: Joe Location: Omaha on May 17, 2008 at 07:11 AM
GOODBYE FAHEY!!!!!!!!!! You were the worst mayor in the history of the city! You fired people to save the city money and didn't think about the safety of the citizens when you did it. Get rid of Fahey or the city will end up like Detriot, full of crime. It already has an extremely high murder rate for a city its size. FAHEY is GONE!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Jeff on May 17, 2008 at 12:07 AM
ricochet000, you say Daub spent a lot of money that we didn't know about until after he left office? Well, Fahey is still in office, so when do you expect we'll find out about all the spending he's hidden? We already know Fahey's postponed massive debt for Omaha until after he's left office. That debt is growing bigger, and the next mayor will have to deal with it because of Fahey's unethical actions.

Posted by: laura Location: omaha on May 16, 2008 at 10:51 PM
Well Mickey then I HOPE you voted for Dave Friend last time around. I think he would have made a GREAT mayor. Thanks again to the Nebraska GOP, who promised him all kinds of support to run and then abandoned him. Poor guy...his campaign commercials a few days before the election looked like they were shot in his basement with a camcorder. No match for the elite, Madison-Avenue style commercials Fahey & his rich cronies paid for to run for MONTHS before the election. I take it McCain-Feingold only applies to races on a national level. Too bad they can't pass something like that in Nebraska for LOCAL elections. Actually, Tony Raimondo moving here is NOT that bad an idea...maybe he could buy himself a condo in the Old Market to establish residency and then we could all write him in!

Posted by: J Location: Bennington on May 16, 2008 at 09:14 PM
As re the streetcars/development: you've already got the development downtown. The proposal is to connect Creighton, downtown, Old Market, maybe the zoo. Ok, what's left to develop? And don't you need someone to ride the streetcars, developed or not? If they won't ride a bus, why would they ride a street car? Are the streetcars to ride or to provide scenery for new buildings? I'm not following that line of logic. I'm not sure $55 mil worth of tearing up the streets will generate $55 mil of new development that will actually benefit the citizens of Omaha. HDR and Kiewit maybe. Taxes? No, there will be incentives to shield those. I really can't get past the lack of riders and the whole mass transit thing to the development benefits envisioned.

It's not about Hal's vision or concern for the future. It's about Hal. Hal NEEDS to be in some position or another. OH, his reason for dropping out of the Senate race? He didn't think he could beat Johanns because of notoriety and campaign funding? Hey Hal, I thought it was about CHANGING Washington, vision for the future.....not jockeying for position.

Daub did a crap for job when he was mayor before, why the heck would anyone want him back. He did nothing to benefit this city. The only thing he got out of it is a divorce and a new wife. Whoooooo Hoooooo re-elect mayor daub to go with all the other losers in omaha!!!

Posted by: This is all the Big O gets? Location: elsewhere on May 16, 2008 at 03:03 PM
Mayor Fahey should not seek re-election and Daub should not run for mayor either. Omaha needs some new people that want to be mayor for Omaha rather than for themselves. Omaha needs a new mayor who has the ability and the desire to exercise fiscal responsibility to guide this city through a pending debt that approaches a with a B $billion. I think there are many qualified people for the job, but they don't want to deal with the mess Omaha is in and the grief that goes with the job. Because of all of the reckless antics of the past two mayors and city council, being the next Omaha mayor will be a dirty job. Omaha loses with either Fahey or Daub as its mayor.

Posted by: Tony Location: Omaha on May 16, 2008 at 02:35 PM
Let's elect Ernie Chambers for Mayor! ANYONE is better than Fahey or Daub! We can't take 4 more years of either one of those two.

Posted by: To J Location: Omaha on May 16, 2008 at 02:30 PM
Fahey is annexation happy or did you forget Elkhorn was his baby alone? Daub is no better or worse (both candidates leave a lot to be desired) than your self-professed hero. We need an OPEN and honest mayor, know any 19 year olds who could campaign on such a platform? I'm sure they would win by a landslide and generate a much better voter turnout!

Posted by: YES! Location: Omaha on May 16, 2008 at 02:19 PM
I love the suggestion that 'T' made, we VOTE 'None Of The Above' in the next election. Wouldn't it be a real hoot if NOTA won!! That would be the only reason to go vote as neither of the proposed candidates (Fahey/Daub) are worth the effort and the NOTA vote would show the local political parties that we have had enough of their lame offerings. It's time for real change instead of the status quo we have so complacently endured for all these years. We need a real VISIONARY who can guide us through the landmines put in place by our last two mayors WITHOUT the need for secrecy and closed door meetings. We need someone who is upfront and on OUR side, who doesn't support corporate interests over our own basic needs such as public safety and good streets. Neither Daub or Fahey fit the bill, that has been sadly proven over and over again. So vote NOTA in May! Don't think choosing one bad apple over the other is your only option!

Posted by: County Resident Location: Outside Omaha on May 16, 2008 at 01:58 PM
I do not get to vote, and I am not a Hal Daub fan, but I bet the addition of the Elkhorn voters upset with the annexation, and the Omaha voters (especially in South O) upset with the stadium decision, coupled with the West Omaha voters who are feeling ignored by Fahey, will make it difficult for Fahey to win relection.

Posted by: BJ Location: Omaha on May 16, 2008 at 01:46 PM
Welcome back, Mayor Hal Daub. We need you. Good-bye, X-Mayor Fahey!

I am one of the citizens who was called a CAVE (Citizen Against Vertually Everything) Dweller, when he wanted to put the Police firing range right behind our playground. At one of the town hall meetings he called to address the reasoning for putting this Police Facility in this particular area, we were told if we listened to him first to hear his reasonings, he would then respectfully listen to our questions and concerns after a short intermission. When everyone was back in there seats and waiting for quite awhile, someone spoke up and asked when Hal would be returning. We were then all told that he had to leave as he had other obligations. What a liar, once a liar always a liar. I just wish that I could vote for mayor, cause it sure would not be for Old Hal!!!!!!!1

Is it any mystery WHY they can't get folks to the polls when all they get to vote for is between Fahey and Daub? The political process shouldn't be choosing between bad candidate #1 and bad candidate #2, neither has the best interest of this city at heart as they continue to run the city finances into the ground (remember we had $12 Million tax fund overage before Daub started). It's no wonder that both Fahey and Daub brag about what a great job this is, they have been riding the backs of the Omaha TAXPAYERS for way too long. Is there ANYONE else who can tell it to the people like it IS and not run behind closed doors to circumvent the public's input into major projects and issues that impact our city? I will vote for anyone ELSE who makes that pitch during their campaign! In my humble opinion, it doesn't matter if Fahey or Daub wins the election, either way the Omaha taxpayer loses. To protest the lack of viable candidates, we should write in 'None of the Above'...

Posted by: To J from Bennington Location: Omaha on May 16, 2008 at 11:49 AM
J, steetcars and MAT bus routes are totally different animals. Developers won't spend a dime along a bus route because it could be moved. Sink steel into the ground and the development will follow. I know that both Daub and Fahey are in favor of the streetcars, so that's a wash for me.

Posted by: Lori Location: NW omaha on May 16, 2008 at 11:35 AM
At least the potholes were fixed and the streets plowed of snow in a timely manner when Daub was mayor!!!!! Our street hasn't been plowed "right" since Fahey took office.

Posted by: Tim M on May 16, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Lets see. We voted this bum out and he thinks it would be a good idea to run again? I don't think so Daub.

Posted by: ricochet000 Location: Iowa on May 16, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Daub is all about the wealthy. He was when he was mayor before and he always will be. Omaha is better off with Fahey than that egomaniac...He would be the WORSE thing that could happen to Omaha...Check you note before you support him people...He spent A LOT of money when he was mayor that you didn't know about until after he was gone...He left Omaha a absolute mess financially...He is not the right man for the job...

Posted by: John Location: Papillion on May 16, 2008 at 10:19 AM
Go Hal! Get Adolf Fehey out of there! I am sure the people of Elkhorn would agree. Hal was a good mayor and would bring respect back to the office. Fehey is only in it for Fehey. He doesn't give a rat's rear for what the people of Omaha or the surrounding communities want. His way or the highway. Good luck Hal!

Posted by: Sylvia Location: Omaha on May 16, 2008 at 09:30 AM
I would vote for Hal Daub again. At least he stays in town. His vision for the riverfront has been impressive, although some people think any money spent is too much. Guess we could wind up like parts of St. Louis if we choose to ignore progress.

Posted by: Kris Location: Omaha on May 16, 2008 at 09:23 AM
I would love to see Daub as our Mayor again. At least he respected the people of Omaha enough to let them have a vote for or against the Qwest. Fahey just does whatever he wants without any thoughts to the people who is "supposed" to be serving. I would vote for Daub in a second.

Posted by: Anonymus Location: Omaha on May 16, 2008 at 09:12 AM
We would be very blessed as a city to get Hal Daub back in the mayoral office, most of the negative posts tell me that the posters don't really know him nor Mike Fakey well, (miss spelled for good reason) being deeply involved and schooled in mayoral politics, trust this, Mike Fahey is horribly dividing this city and Hal Daub can and will reunite it!

To those who want Daub because of streetcars in downtown and midtown: you've already got MAT running those cheap routes in those same locations and no one is using those now. Omaha is not maintaining the streets it has now - that's one of the reasons Daub got voted out before. So, you think tearing up the streets and fixing $55 mil worth of steel in them so you can't move a route that doesn't pan out is a good idea? When people aren't using the MAT lines doing essentially the same thing now? How about an Ollie the Trolley system on the proposed routes FIRST, see if it works, for a whole lot cheaper? As for the rest of the Daub thing, the other 2 reasons he got voted out: he didn't play "nice" with the City Council, and his arena/convention center/hotel plans were financially unworkable, although conceptually good. Oh, and he was annexation-happy, putting a strain on the ability of Omaha to provide services to its citizens.

Posted by: Greenie Location: Omaha on May 16, 2008 at 07:16 AM
Are people forgetting that Hal Daub lined his own pockets while mayor with the Rick's Boatyard Cafe deal? I fear he will do so, again, if elected mayor. Fahey has kept spending down on everything but the gradiose stadium, which I oppose. I think he would be more fiscally conservative than is Hal Daub, though I do not like either of them.

DAUB is only for the rich people??? Oh PUH-LEEZE, "NOOOOOO"...how can you say that with a straight face when all the REALLY rich people have lined their pockets for 8 years (and still are) under FAHEY?! I agree with Jack; the bad feelings with Daub and the Council were because Daub wanted to actually wanted to accomplish things for the city. I think Daub could actually accomplish some things with this council...I know there are several considering running and frankly, I'd take Daub over Suttle any day. Sad thing is, if Daub wins, it pretty much means the last 8 years were a farce and never should have happened. Which, I truly believe, it IS.

Fahey Had NOTHING to do with the stadium. That was all started by Daub. And if everyone was so sure the stadium is a good thing, why didn't they try and build it with bonds, and let the public vote. BEcause he knew their would be no community suppoert to build it. If you are lead to believe its not your money being spent(like FAhey has done)then why would anyone be against it? Because they know it will eventually fall on the taxpayers

I have met Hal and his wife- even wound up having lunch with them while he was mayor, both very fine people, he much different in person than his pubic face. (better). I hope if he becomes Mayor again he puts a different type of person in as his chief of staff and also for other administrative offices- some of these were the most arrogant people I have ever encountered- they made you feel foolish for calling them on a public service issue. I think his staff is why he got beat by Fahey.

Wanted: ANY 19 year old who will run for mayor of Omaha on the same full public disclosure platform that won the mayoral election in Oklahoma for another 19 year old. I don't know about anyone else but I am tired of the no-account options in Daub and Fahey. If that's the best that either party can come up with, we need some younger blood in office that doesn't have the biased agendas that these two have. Really, between Fahey and Daub, who is considered the lesser of two evils? Now you know why we can't get folks to the polls, no new or exciting choices, just the same old bulls butting heads on the shakiest of platforms. We deserve better!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's get Hal back in there. We love you, Hal!

He's got my vote!!! Welcome Back!!

Posted by: Kristin Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 02:35 PM
I would never vote for Haul Daub!!!! We need to make this Democratic state!!! If we would have voted in Casino's we would have money to pay for the ballpark and not making us suffer with taxes!!!! NO MORE REPUBLICANS they are making out country broke!!!!!!

Posted by: ron Location: omaha on May 15, 2008 at 02:08 PM
Are you kidding me?????????? He is just as bad as fahey no thanks.

Posted by: Midlander Location: Metro on May 15, 2008 at 02:03 PM
    ABF (Anybody but Fahey)!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 01:36 PM
The best news Omaha has heard in some time! I think Hal Daub is the breath of fresh air that Omaha really needs right now. Hopefully he can fix all of the blunders of current Mayor Mike Fahey!

Posted by: Rachel Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 01:02 PM
    Hooray for Daub!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: DorkMan Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 12:54 PM
Good for Daub, let's get rid of Mr. Fahey and all of his "insightful" ideas that are going to tax us for years to come.

Posted by: ricochet000 Location: Iowa on May 15, 2008 at 12:48 PM
That's all you need Omaha is a bigger egomaniac in office than Fahey...If Daub runs and you elect him. I will laugh. HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Posted by: Jon Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Now, this is a surprise! Considering the way he just managed to be around when the quest center board was cooling their heals on the cws thing, creating a political nightmare for Fahey...I believe I predicted this in another comment, and got rudely shot down!

Posted by: Terry Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 12:07 PM
Gee, what a shock. Daub thinks he is the king of the world now. Go away Hal.

Posted by: RM Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 12:02 PM
    Another spend spend spend mayor.

Posted by: Hal No ! Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 11:54 AM
Hal No ! I would vote for Bill Callahan for mayor of Omaha before I would vote for Hal Daub.

Posted by: West O on May 15, 2008 at 11:41 AM
    No, please no!!!

Posted by: W Location: midtown on May 15, 2008 at 11:25 AM
No more Fahey. I will be voting for anyone except Fahey. And it is because of more things then just the stadium.

Posted by: Stephanie Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 11:14 AM
Anyone will be better than Fahey.

Posted by: UNKNOWN Location: OMAHA on May 15, 2008 at 11:12 AM
I don't remember did this guy ever do anything good for our city. And is he going to

Posted by: Steve Location: Ponca on May 15, 2008 at 11:11 AM
Get Fahey The Clown out of office & vote for Daub if he decieds to run. At least he's done more than what Fahey has accomplished. Can't get any worse, can it?

Posted by: c Location: omaha on May 15, 2008 at 11:00 AM
I would respectfully ask Mr. Daub NOT to run for Mayor.

Posted by: Tired of Politics Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Mr Daub is FORMER mayor for a reason. Would just be "more of the same" if re-elected. Save your money and time, Mr Daub. What a great choice the voters would have; Daub or Fahey! Come on, let's see someone else throw their hat in the ring. People are getting sick and tired of the "same ol same ol.

Posted by: Jack Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 10:28 AM
The reason Daub and the city council had such a bad relationship was because he was MUCH more concerned abiut the community as a whole, unlike Fahey that just wants to fill the pockets of his buddies who own land near the new stadium and his construction buddies who will get all the contracts to do the building.

Posted by: llr Location: omaha on May 15, 2008 at 10:05 AM
Great. Just great. These two will duke it out and nothing will change in Omaha, at all. And I thought Fahey said a long time ago he wouldn't run again? He spends too much time out of town as it is. Maybe Ken Stinson should run for mayor. He already seems to have more inside political strings than anyone else in town.

Posted by: T Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 10:05 AM
Daub and Fahey are both big spenders, and the taxpayers will be paying for their lagress for the next several decades, while our roads, parks and city services will all go downhill - I will be voting for none of the above

Posted by: Levi McHarnus on May 15, 2008 at 10:03 AM
Yeah that is what this city needs.

Posted by: D Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 10:00 AM
The only helpful advice I can give him is not to waste his money running. Anyone but him.

Posted by: No Worse Location: Nebraska on May 15, 2008 at 10:00 AM
He sure couldn't do any worse than the current mayor.

Posted by: Bill Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 09:53 AM
Anyone is better than the person we have in office now. At least when Hal was Mayor, we were allowed to vote on the Qwest Center. This mayoral election may prove to be very interesting.

Posted by: Jen on May 15, 2008 at 09:48 AM
I hope Mr. Daub decides NOT to run again. We need new leadership in the Mayors Office.

Posted by: Paul Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 09:47 AM
I'm starting the recall process already if anyone wants to sign the petition.

Posted by: CM Location: Bellevue on May 15, 2008 at 09:42 AM
Sure glad I don't live in Omaha; would not enjoy having to make a decision between the two.

Posted by: Richard Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 09:41 AM
What financial challanges is Daub going to resolve, he would be lying to all of us if he thinks hes going to lower taxes. Let me tell you something, taxes are there for a reason! I credit Fahey for the qwest center and our soon to be new stadium. Daub needs to realize hes a loser and just to save his money!

Posted by: NOOO Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 09:37 AM
If this guy runs again, I hope he gets beat reallly bad. Daub is nothing more than a snake in the grass. He did nothing for the city of omaha and I would revote Fahey. Daub is only for the rich people and feels nothing for the majority of omaha citizens!
