Three of four suspects are juveniles

Four suspects are in custody linked to a shooting spree that damaged homes and vehicles on Sunday afternoon.

The case began with a report of a carjacking at 30th and Parker Street. A 1994 Plymouth Grand Caravan was reportedly taken at gunpoint by three suspects. A shot was fired into the air as the vehicle was taken.

At 4:11 p.m., officers received a shots fired call in the area of 27th Avenue and Fort Street. An officer found that a house at 2723 Fort had been hit by gunfire and the incident involved a vehicle that matched the description of the van stolen on North 30th. Two vehicles in the area were also hit by gunfire.

At 4:59 p.m., police responded to a shots fired call in the area of 29th and Spencer Street. Again, officers were told of that van being involved.

At 5:31 p.m., officers received another shots fired call in the area of 27th Avenue and Fort Street. The reporting parties believed the same minivan was involved.

The Omaha Police helicopter located that stolen van at 31st and Sorensen Parkway. The helicopter followed the van to 42nd and Fowler Avenue where officers chased the suspects and after a short foot pursuit, all four suspects were caught.

One of those suspects is identified as 19-year-old Charles Toles of 2411 Spencer. The other three are juveniles, ages 14, 15 and 17.

All those arrested were booked for robbery or accessory, use of a weapon to commit a felony and unlawful discharge into an occupied dwelling.

Getting the guns off of the streets will never happen. What needs to happen is a law change that if any crime is committed with a gun involved is and automatic felony with the punishment either life in prison without the possibility of parole or execution. Take a page from the state of Texas. Blue Collar comedian Ron White is from Texas and his comment is that "My state has a death penalty ... and we USE it." Enforcement of the death penalty will dramatically decrease the unlawful use of firearms.

My thoughts and prayers are for the law abiding citizens of North O who have to deal with these "gangstas".

Hey Da Drank- Considering I cuffed up one of the guys the gang unit had a gun point myself, being one of the first cars to arrive, I don't need you questioning when and how I work. I do my job as do all the other officers up here in the hood. To kevin- I ask what should we be doing that we are not to get these kids with guns? 84 guns taken off the street in northeast Omaha alone since the first of the year, 53 of those in the last 8 weeks. Tell me how we are not doing what we can. Tell me where all these kids with guns are so we can go get more of them. It would be much worse if we weren't down here taking these guns off the street. It blows my mind that there are people out there that think the police don't care about the violence up here and are ignoring the situation. You really think we want to deal with the next kid that gets caught in the cross fire, or lose one of our own from these thugs.

Da Drank: To paraphrase, those that live by the gun shall die by the gun. How about this: try using your voice to bring order to disorder instead of dissing the police. Your "peeps" shoot more of their own than the police do. Think about that.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 13, 2008 at 08:16 AM
Da Drank: when was the last time an officer has put holes in your peeps? Oh you mean those that pulled a gun on an officer! Why didn't you say that. Tell your peeps to leave the guns alone and those results would be different!

Nice job OPD! You guys do a tuff job and I personally want to thank each and every one of you.

Posted by: Edgar on May 12, 2008 at 11:05 PM
Good job, OPD. The younger ones will be back on the street in 24 hours, unless they were the shooters. The driver may get a week in jail. It must be discouraging for the police for the thugs to get such ridiculous sentencing. Somehow, though, I think these kids aren't playing with a full deck and there isn't much they can be taught - just put them in jail where they can't hurt anyone else.

Posted by: Da Drank on May 12, 2008 at 10:14 PM
Thanks and peace out to Original Cop! None a my boys got shot by your boys. I know how you OPD like to be puttin' holes in my peeps for no reason. You doin' a good job there with your able 1, gang unit, T.R.U., victim's assistance unit, C.I.D., C.S.I., traffic unit, E.R.U., and other abbreviated peeps. Maybe if you stopped talkin' on here, and started workin', we could be proud to be payin' you that 20 years and out pension.

W, how do you "get rid of the guns"? The UK banned guns - and now their gun crime is higher than ever! We've already made murder illegal many years ago, but that hasn't gotten rid of that either. What a dolt!

Posted by: quality on May 12, 2008 at 08:53 PM
Good work OPD!! Unfortunately this is what you do daily--however most of it will never make the news until you mess something up. But--know most of us support what you do, thanks!!

No one said they were from that area, but you assume they are. Could be from any part of town and just going there to cause more problems. As far as them being 19, 14, 15 and 17 they should all be charged as adults. Big enough to do the crime, big enough to do the time.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 12, 2008 at 08:11 PM
HOLD THE PARENTS AS ACCOUNTABLE AS THESE KIDS!! THIS IS THE ONLY SOLUTION TO THE PARENTING ERRORS THEY HAVE MADE ALONG THE WAY.I dont see another way to solve the problem in North O other than this!

    Posted by: 2 W on May 12, 2008 at 06:41 PM
So ur saying we should just build a wall & fence all the ppl of north Omaha? The ppl that work hard & go 2 school & have aspirations for the future...the ppl like U? The ppl that continuely live in fear of the same thugs u complain about from a distance...the same ppl that r afraid 2 come forward with what they see because they don't wanna b another Clennix Martin...they same ppl who r automatically afraid & suspicious of they police because they like U tend 2 lump all of north omaha ppl n2 criminal statistics...North, South West Omaha we r still 1 community. There shouldn't b any us against them mentality...the rich west O ppl against the poor North O ppl...the whole this wouldn't happen in my neighborhood argument..the only difference ppl from the better off communities shoot up malls & schools, but thats a whole other conversation...it shouldn't b a matter of privilage...we should b fighing 4 this city as a whole. If ur not part of the solution, ur part of the problem

The National Guard has enough to do, besides in this war that everyone is complaining about they have lost 1.7 people per-day since it started, shoot Omaha has that beat hands down! So far this year alone we have gunned down 3.2 per day! Just check out OPD's web site! They wouldn't lie! The war is at our front door and no one is doing anything about it! NO ONE IS COMING TO A CITY MORE DEADLY THAN A WAR ZONE!

Watch, they'll probably get a slap on the wrist probation sentence. They need to send a message and start locking these animals away for years.

Posted by: Kevin on May 12, 2008 at 05:14 PM
How weak is our law enforcement if we have 14 year olds running the streets with guns shooting people and they can't stop it? They need to get their act together quick before it gets out of hand. These kids need to realize that what they do now effects their entire life and need to be taught basic values of life and stop being idiots. Also, where are these kids parents? Maybe we need to send the parents and the kids to jail for a few years then maybe it will stop.

Posted by: Thom on May 12, 2008 at 04:37 PM
Kids with guns, Kids with guns, Kids up at all hours of the night, kids not in school.

Posted by: Amy on May 12, 2008 at 03:25 PM
I am so sick of hearing about young thugs doing ignorant things. Ohhh thats right, I bet the OPD somehow made them do this too... wake up North O, get a hold of your community.

Posted by: W on May 12, 2008 at 03:10 PM
when is the wall going up to seperate the violent areas from the rest of us? Get rid of the guns and then we will just have scared bullies that will have to use fists instead of guns. Can't have drive bys without guns.

Posted by: Dave on May 12, 2008 at 02:39 PM
What a shocker, juveniles form "that" area again. Oh but wait I am sure they were all "turning their lives around" what a joke!! List all their names convict them in a federal court, and put them in a 6x9 cell with a guy named BUbba(no offense if your name is Bubba)and see how big and tough they are then. Regardless of ages they ALL KNEW what they were doing was WRONG

Posted by: Anonymous on May 12, 2008 at 02:35 PM
probably just another 4 people trying to turn their lives around

Posted by: Bob on May 12, 2008 at 02:25 PM
They must have some pretty strong drugs up there. I'm sure these boys were on the brink of turning their lives around though....

Posted by: The Original Cop on May 12, 2008 at 02:12 PM
Excellent job by my officers down here as well as the gang unit and Able-1. Arrests are made and guns are taken off the street nearly everyday down here. So to all you naysayers, that is what the police are doing about the violence.

Posted by: HL on May 12, 2008 at 01:23 PM
We saw the heliccopter circling, and my first thought was that there had been another shooting. Pretty sad state of affairs that not only was that my first thought, but that it turned out to be true. At least no injuries or fatalities from this one, but that's probably sheer luck. When is it going to stop, people? When are CHILDREN (yes, 14, 15, 17, and 19 are still children) going to be taught to respect others and not use violence as a crutch? Unfortunately, that's not likely to happen as long as society keeps glorifying thugs and the gangsta lifestyle, treating violence as "entertainment" (Grand Theft Auto, "Hostel" or "Saw", anyone?), and promoting the me-first-and-only, gotta-get-it-all-right-now mentality. I'm at a loss to understand why there's so much hate. How does shooting someone or their property make you a "man"? It doesn't. There's a big difference between respect and fear, so how about going for the respect rather than taking the coward's way out.

Perhaps our Nebraska National Guard could get some additional training in North O. My gosh.

Posted by: cece on May 12, 2008 at 01:11 PM
I say great job and thank you very much OPD. I bet the punk kids that terroized this entire area of town have parents that thought their kids were in church while this was all happening. Throw the book at them...leave them in jail for 20 years. Why don't we let the prison system take a crack at raising them.

Posted by: Rich on May 12, 2008 at 01:02 PM
This is when the parents should be held accountable as well as the young thugs. But there isn't a problem in North O according to the parents because their kids wouldn't do such a thing. Good luck North O, because if this is any indication it will be a busy and violent summer.

Posted by: Jen on May 12, 2008 at 12:57 PM
They will probably let the 14,15 and 17 need to be charged as adults. My 10 year old knows right from wrong so I don't want to hear the sob story of them being too young to understand what they are doing.
