    Salute to retirees

Nine Omaha police officers, three sergeants and one deputy chief are all saying farewell to their days in law enforcement.

The retirement ceremony for the 13 officers was held Friday afternoon at police headquarters.

Among the retirees: a husband and wife team. Sergeant Don Barnes and his wife, Officer Jane Barnes, have a combined 44 years on the force.

Chief Eric Buske acknowledges the department lost a lot of experience through retirements but he says it hasn't affected public safety.

Buske says, "We have lost a lot of talent to retirements but there's still a lot of talent in the police department because we really work a team environment where experience and knowledge is spread among a group of officers working in a unit."

A new class of police recruits is in the works.

Hey Bob or should I say Bobby because the way you think you must be in grade school. When a police officer retires the public doesn't pay a single dime to them. In fact the public will be saving money because the people that will replace them will be paid less than they were making.

Seems like we're losing them faster than we're replacing them. So, WOWT, what's happening to the money budgeted for pay that's not being used for all of the empty positions? Is it going to something reasonable, like building up the retirement fund? Or is Mayor Fahey taking it for his pet projects?

to bob where did you get your math?? Not all of the cops are getting big bucks to retire. Besides in this town of ungrateful snots who would want to be a cop. According to most people who post our cops are lazy, tigger happy, donut eaters. Nevermind that every day they walk out the door with a larger than normal risk of not coming back. And don't spout the crap about "they chose that" Think about what life would be like if they weren't around--wild west anyone??

9 cops=about 1 million dollars a year for taxpayers in retirements payments. Yay. Thank the mayor for that one.

The "take the money and run" cops leaving can't hurt what we don't have-- public safety.
