Police are investigating a shooting that injured two people late Thursday night. One was hospitalized in critical condition but he is expected to survive.

Authorities received the report of the shooting at 4022 Wirt Street shortly before midnight.

Officers found one victim in the home. The other had already been taken to the hospital by private vehicle.

The victim at the scene, 19-year-old Adrian Smith, told officers that he and 28-year-old Derrick Hayes, were standing on the front porch with several other people when someone approached and began firing. The gunman then fled on foot.

Smith suffered a superficial wound. Hayes was critically injured but is expected to survive.

Edgar: That's OK; I don't like them very much, either!

To Biff: ditto ditto ditto : right on the mark. However, the ACLU won't like you.

Citizen, people have to WANT to be rehabilitated in order for it to "take", and for the most part, people just do the court-order thing to avoid jail or the nasty charge on their record, not because they really want to change. How about educating people to not have babies before they're in a good marriage in addition to emphasizing the importance of a good education? Society could use a few less kids having kids.

Guess what T, even though some of you fools refuse to believe it, the crime rates in Omaha are down. We do identify the most active "bad actors" and target them as much as we legally can. That's what gets me the most fired up and responding on these posts is when people like you opine about the fact that we are not doing anything, yet you have no idea what we do! As bad as is may or may not be, it would be a hell of a lot worse if you didn't have dedicated officers up here in the hood taking 80 guns off the street this year alone and putting as many bangers in jail as we can.

To "T"- Just what is it that you think the police are not doing about the violence? Over 80 guns taken off the street in Northeast Omaha since the first of the year. Several recent arrests on homicides. Do you honestly think that we know where these guys are and where they are going to shoot up next and choose to ignore it? What's your solution? Please tell us how to handle this because we obviously can't handle it. I'll do what I can to implement whatever you come up with. Let's hear it!

We need a mayor like Rudy - he took a city that was riddled with violent crime, undertook active polcing (identifying the really bad actors and targeting them for arrest) took the heat from the liberal press and community activists and cut the crime rate dramatically.

    sad sight everyone getting shot

Judging by the comments posted it's safe to say that most people commenting don't understand the dynamics of interactions between people involved in the different types of violent crimes that occur, specifically in the Eastern part of the city. Most of what we see is a result of "chickens coming home to roost" and is a direct result of our society's policy towards spending to imprison people as opposed to spending on early childhood education and schooling. Our society develops the criminal network with our high prison population and the ignorant "zero tolerance" policies we have. We can't imprison EVERYONE FOREVER. We try to and then we don't want to give them a second chance. What do we expect them to do without second chances and no true rehabilitation? We, society, are the one's who create these monsters and then we have to live with the results.

Seems you, along with a lot of other people, don't understand personal responsibility comes along with getting by in life. Not laying around, shooting each other up, then expecting the authorities to come along and have the answers to everything.

A shooting in east Omaha is like a roadside bomb in Iraq. It's not really suprising anymore. Sad.....

Yeah, I'm sure they just approached and started firing. I'm sure some words were exchanged. Its funny how all these stories the victims sound like they weren't doing anything, just minding their own business, but usually they take themselves to the hospital instead of having cops and an ambulance come to the house, usually in fear of being guilty.

And who will it be tonight? Let's all pray. Where are their parents and families? Come on people; do something good with your lives.

Fahey and Interim Chief Buske are doing such a wonderful job responding to the shooting incidents in Omaha - NOT! I am starting to feel that Mosul is safer than Omaha. The mayor fiddles while the city burns.

I am sure that these were upstanding citizens and were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sorry, people don't just come to your house and start shooting. I am sure there was a reason behind it, and I am sure the details will be released in the upcoming days.
