Ralston fire officials say a short in a landscaping accent light caused a blaze early Tuesday morning that damaged a house. No one was hurt.

Firefighters arrived at the scene near 77th and Maywood to find flames on the outside of the house with heavy smoke inside. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and ventilated the residence.

A neighbor discovered the fire when she went outside to check on a noise she heard at 12:45 a.m. She called 911 and ran next door to alert the occupants of the burning home.

According to an investigator with the State Fire Marshal's office, the short in the landscape light ignited wood mulch and the fire spread to the house.

Damage to the outside of the home was estimated at $6,000.

I wonder if the lighting system was installed correctly?

James, the solar ones I am looking at require no battery OR wiring. They don't put out much light, but if we NEED a lot of light at night we turn on the porch and yard lights (for company or pizza delivery people). It's for looks more than anything else. I'm definitely not hardwiring ANYTHING that could catch fire, and I certainly wouldn't hire an electrician at union wages to install a $75 set of lights.

wow, those 12 volt transformers pack a punch for that, weren't they fused to cut off in a short? sounds like a product recall potential to me.

Einstein from Iowa, you don't need to be qualified and licensed to install landscape lighting.

Laura, change your minded, the solar powered charge a 1.5 volt battery and come on at dark(I have 8 in my garden), this incident probably was the low-voltage lights. Houdse powered thru a stepdown transformer, they have wires leading down the chain of lights. One wrong shovel, garden trowel mistake and bare wires together. just inspect the uncovered wires regularly.

If the person installing these lights was a QUALIFIED AND LINENCED electrician, this wouldn't have happened...Hint - QUALIFIED AND LICENCED!!!

I read these post and people are always saying mind your own business, that is what happens when you don't. You can be a productive member of society. If this neighbor minded their own business, this could have been a lot worse!

I never knew these could be that dangerous. We have been considering solar-powered landscape lights simply for ease of installation (as well as cost)...my mind's made up for sure now, after reading this story. No landscaping wiring for us!
