A 74-year-old man is headed to jail for sexually assaulting three children. Doug Henning was sentenced on Friday.
Henning asked the judge for compassion, saying he missed his wife of 51 years, he missed his home and he wasn't well.
But prosecutors said that all psychological tests point to denial and the judge agreed.
Chief Deputy County Attorney Tricia Freeman says, "I think that even the judge identified the fact that he refuses to accept responsibility for what he has done."
Court-ordered evaluations came back with a diagnosis of pedophilia and the state argued that Henning was a sexually violent predator, who abused three girls in his Sarpy County home.
His attorney, Steve Lefler, did not deny the test results.
Lefler says, "The written reports that the judge had available to him would lead a logical person to believe that was correct."
Henning cried in court Friday, asking for anything but prison.
The judge concluded that incarceration was the only safe solution, sentencing him to nine to 15 years.
Ms. Freeman says, "I'm satisfied that he is going to prison and he can't hurt anybody. It's bittersweet because there are still three little girls that are devastated by something horrible that has happened to them."
The father of one victim told us Friday that the state did a good job prosecuting the case but he wishes Henning was given more jail time. He said that he would like to see mandatory sentencing without parole in Nebraska. He also told us that his daughter is getting help and doing better.
