    Economic stimulus checks await
    Posted: 4:40 PM Mar 28, 2008
    Last Updated: 6:17 PM Mar 29, 2008

Hundreds of IRS offices nationwide were open Saturday for a program called Super Saturday. It was a first step for many to make sure they receive their government rebate check.

The rebate check is part of an economic stimulus package and it's in addition to your tax refund, should you be receiving one.

Eligible people will receive up to $600, $1,200 for married couples. Parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17.

You can refer to the chart to see when yours is scheduled to be sent out. Those mailing dates are based on the last two digits of your Social Security number.

Millions of retirees, disabled veterans and low income workers who usually are exempt from filing a tax return must do so this year in order to receive their rebate check. The stimulus or refund checks don't count as 2008 income.

So many people have so many questions about the economic stimulus payments that the IRS is working overtime to help them all.

This year at the Omaha office, 50 to 60 additional people have come in asking questions just about the stimulus package.

"I have no clue right now," says taxpayer Johnette Lewis. "I'm here to find out what kind of answers they can give me or if perhaps if I do qualify can they assist me filling out the papers."

The refund is a bandade to the problem it will still be their when the money is spent A the money you will pay in taxes next year wont matter much anyway And ron paul might be ok but we need to secure our boarders and quit giving all the illeagls everything for free

This is just a Gov't welfare payment. I'm giving mine back to the state. It needs it more than I do.

K, sit and spin. I heard from my financial department at school that the stimulus check we recieve, we will have to claim it as income on our taxes the next year, is this for real? Anybody?

to kay, first i was a single parent, because my husband chose to play. I was and am a full time employee, and have paid tons in taxes and the most i ever got back raising two kids, was state and federal together was $ 1,000 total, i paid for everything and went without for years and as of this date i have no savings and will never be able to retire. so dont judge all single parent households by the few you know about.

We do intend to "spend" our stimulus check on home improvement. I agree with jen though...WHY waste all that money to NOTIFY us of the check, when most of us with a junior high education can find the IRS website and determine by SSN when we might get the check. Actually, I don't care..am NOT waiting with bated breath for it. In fact, next fall when I have a knee replacement might be the perfect time to install the countertops, sink and floor! After all, for at least 6 wks post-op, it won't be ME that's cooking in there! By the way, IF you file a 1040, you will get a check. 100% disability of SSI or disabled veteran do not qualify. UNLESS there is a second source of taxable income. My father-in-law filed for the first time in 5 years (retirement) this year to get the $300 rebate.

Our money would better spent if they would stop giving the credit to single parent household. They hardly pay in a dime, but get back 5-10K for a refund. I should not have to pay them with my taxes because they are divorced or had children out of wedlock.

Abolish the IRS. Vote for Ron Paul.

if you have to decide between food and gas maybe you made some bad fincial decisions in the past. furthermore if you don't like waiting for your tax return adjust your W-2 and don't give the government so much money out of your paycheck.

To Marie, I am a disabled Vet and on SSDI and am able to receive a stimulus check. You should go down to the main office at 1313 farnam and talk with them about it.

First, Frank - good idea. Second - why did the government waste $42 million to send taxpayers a letter stating the checks were coming (uh, we know - its been plastered on tv & in the papers). Third - I'm happy that I'll be getting $$$ but there are waaaaayyyy more people that need it worse than me. Put the money towards programs that'll really help people....those that lost their job this year, those senior citizens choosing between food & medicine, etc. Not just give cash to people in hopes they'll go buy that big screen they can't afford. W just did this so he could pat himself on the back and try to salvage his "legacy." Once again, losing site of ways to REALLY help those in need. (PS. Lori: i got my NE refund over a week before my Fed refund, maybe check who's doing your filing).

Once again, if I only receive SSI funds(disabilty) can I still file to get the rebate? I have been told yes & no even by IRS volunteers. Can a veteran with disability funds file for this rebate? Will Liberty Tax help me with this for free?

Posted by: G Location: La Vista on Mar 29, 2008 at 09:55 PM
If the only income that you recieve is SSI, you don't qualify, which I don't think is fair. This $152 billion, from what I heard, isn't coming from the income taxes. Its coming from sales taxes that are charged for services, merchandise, gas, etc. People on SSI pay these taxes, but don't get any of this money. If you recieve any other kind of Social Securty check, you can get the rebate check.

Posted by: mb on Mar 29, 2008 at 07:26 PM
G from La Vista, disabled and those receiving SSI are NOT taxpayers. Their income is non-taxable which is why they do not file returns. However, it appears that they CAN file a return this year if they want to receive a rebate check.

I love it, I going to get some rims. Maybe a new flat screen tv. I know I have a way over due credit card, but the rims spin!

Posted by: G Location: La Vista on Mar 29, 2008 at 05:23 PM
I agree with Frankthat the money could be use better. Even if they took that $152 billion, and gave EVERYONE of us taxpayers, disabled and recieveing SSI or not, a good discount at the gas pump. I would at least be able to afford to get to my Drs. appointments without having to decide between gas and food for my family.

If you can't make the IRS sites today, stop by the local Liberty Tax office, and we do these for free also.

I wonder if that chart above means that our check will be in the bank on that day if we direct deposited?? Things are so unclear about amounts and time frame for some people I hope they send out letters of explanation.

Posted by: Frank Location: Wahoo,NE on Mar 29, 2008 at 07:49 AM
$152 Billion dollars for a one time payment to taxpayers. I myself would rather see them spend that money to build an oil refinery and reduce the price of Gasoline, that would then be an ongoing savings that could last for several years. Lower fuel prices will give people more money to spend on other things, which is what these stimulus checks are supposed to do.

I wish I could get one of those checks. I'm disabled and recieve SSI, so I don't qualify. I really could use the $300, so that I can finally buy some decent clothes and food for my family. I've even had to resort to digging in dumpsters for clothing when I see people throwing out good clothes. This is how I was finally able to get some decent clothes. How dare we get anything from the government without having to first beg for it.

We got our Fed refund three weeks ago. STILL waiting on the state of Nebraska. Maybe we should ask them for the INTEREST? Got an e-mail from the state saying we should have filed electronically...oops, made too much money so couldn't. They received our paperwork in mid-February, yet it take 12 weeks to get a refund? Welcome to the "good life"...
