    Governor opposes increase

    A | A | A

The average cost of gasoline in Nebraska was $3.24 for unleaded on Thursday. That's up seven-cents from a month ago and 60-cents from this time last year. Lawmakers are considering a plan that would add to the cost.

The State Department of Roads could lose millions of dollars in funding this year and one way to make up for that would require us to pay more at the pump.

This comes at a time when motorist Adrian Block of Omaha says, "Prices are totally outrageous right now." Andrea Mitteis echoes the sentiment saying, "they're too high," but Maureen Borman notes, "there's really nothing you can say or do about it."

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman says people in Nebraska can't afford to pay more in gasoline taxes. Currently, the fuel tax is 23-cents-per-gallon and it will rise 2.5-cents in July. The legislature wants to add another 4.5-cents on top of that.

Governor Heineman says, "We have rising health care costs, rising gas prices, food prices going up dramatically. Now is not the time to raise the gas tax."

Some senators in the legislature say the state needs the money for roads but the governor says there has to be another avenue.

"We need to continue, for example, have the federal government be a full partner not a limited partner," he says. "If they come through with funding we're expecting, frankly, we'll be OK for the next year."

With or without an extra gas tax many watch how much they have to spend out on the road.

Andrea Mitteis says. "I don't know what grade my car takes but I get whatever is cheapest."

Adrian Block has turned to bus service to save money.

The bill to increase the state's gas tax is still being debated in the legislature.

Nebraska is tax happy! Their answer to everything is, "raise taxes". Here's a novel idea: efficiently & effectively utilize the money they already get and STOP the endless waste! Reduce Welfare & eliminate support for illegals. Help train folks for valued employment not just hand out money monthly. Nebraska can't keep retirees & college graduates in the state because of the job market, wages, cost of living, & high taxes. Wise up & take a good hard look at the budget, eliminate the "fluff" & waste rather than raise taxes of ANY kind or just change the sign at the border from "The Good Life" to "The Taxed Life".

Posted by: Jim Location: Papillion on Apr 3, 2008 at 09:52 AM
Leaders lead, Managers manage, Representatives represent, & Governors govern. Raising taxes is not the answer! Operate within a budget, not raise taxes to reduce the burden of balancing the wants, needs, & finances of the State or Nation. There is no denying that the roads need to be repaired. They must look within the current budget and eliminate waste to fund the things we need, IE…safe roads. I propose reducing Welfare, Medicaid and instead fund a Jobs training Program that will reduce (if not eliminate) the current generational Welfare Society. Further, stop encouraging and supporting illegal immigrants with our hard-earned tax dollars. Bottom line is if Nebraska raises the gas tax, even more Nebraskans will just fill up in Iowa (where the prices are lower) on their way to or from the casinos. If Nebraska were to expand their gambling laws to allow Vegas-style destination Casinos on the Riverfront, the end result could be safer roads, smaller classrooms, and lower taxes for ALL.

Leave the tax where it is. My God, we pay enough already! If the price truly reflected supply and demand, then why are the big oil co. making record prof. EVERY SINGLE MONTH? It is not about supply and demand, it is about $$ and the sooner we get a handle on it, and stop them from gouging us the better! NO NEW TAXES on gas!

Jake, 7 cents/gallon may be minimal but the point remains it is an increase in taxes. Why don't they increase the tax on luxury items instead of items necessary to everyday existence. Some good examples would be lawn services, country club memberships, boats, and luxury cars.

Posted by: To "Jake" in Regency Location: Omaha on Mar 29, 2008 at 04:07 AM
Considering you live in "Regency", you could probably afford gas at 10 bucks/gal and you probably own several gas guzzling vehicles. But most of us aren't gazillionaires and every penny added to the pump hurts a lot. I make a decent living, but it sure doesn't seem that way anymore. Too bad not all of us are as loaded as you are Jake...

Thank you Liz for paving the old pioneer trails here out west. Wow, the old wagon doesn't bounce around near as much. What's next? Running water??

Suggestions: Take responsibility. Those who live in NE should plate their vehicles in NE because it's the right/honest thing to do, creating the revenue that NE should already be receiving. Those who are self-employed should be paying taxes instead of using all types of deductions that end up causing them to be at a "loss" for years and years. Law-makers should look at repealing the "Earned Income Credit" that gives more money back to individuals that have paid in less than what they will get back in a return. Everyone needs to step-up and take responsibility for themselves instead of always looking for a short-cut or hand-out.

You want to have a way to raise more money for the state. Increase fines on law-breakers. I know that fines for speeding were just increased, but I think they need to be higher. Instead of having a flat rate for the first 15-20 mph it should be a minimum of $10 for every mile an hour over the speed limit whatever court costs are. So if you are going 10 over the fine is $100, 20 = $200 and so on, with no maximum. So if the state or city is giving at least 5 tickets or so a week for people going at least 100 mph on the Dodge expressway where the speed is 55 then that would equal about $450 or $2,250 extra per week. Punish the lawbreakers and leave the rest of us alone. At least in this situation it is the individual person choice.

I'd really like to know how anyone in NE legislature thought this potential gas tax was a great idea. Gee, maybe we would have more money for roads if we would skip the new stadium, oh and that dumb foot bridge that no-one will use. Or if they do use it, it will be to go spend money in Iowa where alot of things ARE cheaper! Instead of Fahey working so hard for money to pay for these unnecessary things why doesn't he put that time and effort into large private donations towards road improvement instead. Name some new road after the rich guy if that's what it takes to keep our taxes down. I think most Nebraskans like myself have already tightened up our wallets as much as we possibly can, when will it be enough!!! They've already got us with higher property taxes, the dumb wheel tax (which I was pretty sure was supposed to go towards roads as well) and now much higher gas than Iowa too, they must be crazy!! Iowa doesn't have all the answers, but they don't seem to have these issues.

Posted by: Essie Location: Outside Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 03:54 PM
According to the Nebraska DOT, in Jan 2008 we ranked 25th highest in gas taxes out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Iowa ranked 33rd. Personally I think the tax has been too high for too long so that's why I've been driving the 11 miles across the border to our eastern neighbors to gas up for the past 2 years. Oh, and Mike in CB try reading the headlines - oil companies have been posting record profits for the past 4 years now - our anger should be directed at the idiots in our government as well as the oil companies. 'Bout time to change my political party affiliation to "anarchist!" - the middle class might just stand a chance that way!

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 28, 2008 at 03:51 PM
Anonymous at 11:09 AM. I've never been anywhere where the roads were worse then Omaha. Most country dirt roads are better then our streets. You know we had better roads when we actually had American citizens doing the manual labor on our road crew. And, our taxes were less. Just because illegal aliens work for less doesn't always mean that we get more for our tax dollar. In fact I have to believe we get much less for our money.

Posted by: Jesse Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 03:46 PM
The increase in tax to approximately $.31 a gallon should put Nebraska in the upper 5 when compared to the current motor fuels tax in other states. What concerns me is that when your raise a tax, you are forcing an increase the cost of the supply which decreases demand. Thus, tax revenue decreases which at a low enough point will induce another tax hike by the legislature. Taxes are a necessary evil. I don’t like paying them as much as the next person. Nebraska’s road system funding doesn’t come out of thin air. Heineman is correct that the Federal government should be a partner in this. A lot of our intrastate maintenance and major improvements are generally centered on the Interstate highways which by its name (Interstate) implies there is a lot of flow through traffic from other states. But when you deal with the Federal government, there are 49 other states that want their roads fixed and improved. There are no easy answers in the end.

Posted by: Jake Location: Regency on Mar 28, 2008 at 03:24 PM
Why the uproar? If the possibility of an extra $0.07 per gallon is going to hurt you then you are living well beyond your means.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 28, 2008 at 03:08 PM
This is ridiculous. Cut worthless state agencies like the Mexican-American Commission and the Aviation Department (which replicates the FAA) and save some money rather then taxing us more!

Posted by: Kris Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 02:56 PM
Lets face it government is business. Sad but true, they just want to make a buck. I have no faith in government. But I tell you one thing. I work downtown and will head to CB to get my gas on my lunchbreak from now on. I hope everyone else does the same if they can!

Posted by: RM Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 02:12 PM
If the state doesn't have the money to build roads don't build them. We don't need divided highways all over the state and expressways everywhere we go.

Posted by: Bryan Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 01:27 PM
How about making I-80 a toll interstate like I-70 in Kansas.

Posted by: D Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 01:20 PM
You can expect everything to go up, not just gas if they pass this, and you can bet that it will be more that 4.5 cents per item.

Oh LIZ that's right, you in Omaha and Lincoln are subsidizing the roads out here in central and western Nebraska. Because there is sooo much new road construction going on here. lol Do your homework Liz. Wanna "give" us away to Wyoming, fine. Lowest taxes in the nation.

Of course you politicians could just spend less of our money and quit taxing us right out of Nebraska. My God, what is wrong with you people!?

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 28, 2008 at 11:16 AM
Brian, say you traded in a 20mpg car for a 30mpg car at $3 gallon. 300 miles used to cost you $45, not it costs you $30. even if they raised the tax by $.50, youd now be paying $35. 35 is still less than 45, you are winning.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 28, 2008 at 11:09 AM
iowa has better roads? hahaha. have you not been on the interstate in council bluffs? i was in iowa city, roads were 10x worse than Omaha.

Remember who these politicians are that support this type of legislation. Get them out of office, do not support them. They do not represent the public, they are out for their own pleasures.

Posted by: Juan Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 10:50 AM
Remember people-the politicians would take every dime you make if we were to let them. Cudos to the Govenor for being against the hike.

Posted by: Thom Location: Columbus on Mar 28, 2008 at 10:48 AM
We need to drill for our own oil in Alaska and off shore to get away from mid-east oil to get fuel prices down. The gas tax is nuts. The gas tax if anything should be cut not raised- Everyone is having a hard time and the gov't just hikes taxes when they need more money. Wait till gasoline hits $4.00 a gallon this summer. I guess Iowa will be hiking their gas tax soon too many states are. Life in Omaha and Nebraska is tuff.

Posted by: Bill Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 10:32 AM
I agree with the govenor - there must be a different avenue rather than adding additional cost at the gas pump. I myself am concerned over the quality of road work being accomplished. It doesn't weem like our road ways are holding up very long before they need repairs or replacement. There must be better roadway materials and methods that would extend the life of our highways. Lately, seems like the state finishes a roadway project just to turn around and rework the same roadway once again. Are we receiving substandard work and/or materials?

Posted by: Mike Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 10:20 AM
You know Iowa looks better everyday! No unreasonable gas tax (and I will be getting my fuel from C.B. if they do increase gas tax by 8 cents a gallon in July), none of the high property taxes we have to pay with no end to unwarranted tax increases in sight, they have better looking roads and a much better infrastructure than Nebraska or Omaha does. We should be more like Iowa and quit wasting taxpayer money. It's the wasted spending that is driving up all of our taxes, not need.

Posted by: Tom Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 10:09 AM
Everyone who lives close to the Nebraska border will drive to other states to buy their gas because it's cheaper. I do and I'll keep doing it. The fat cats are getting fatter with to taxes they impose.

Posted by: jw Location: omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 09:56 AM
Seems to me that we need to look into areas like welfare and ebt cards. Put a time limit on these freebies. Instead of paying generation after generation. That would free up some $$'s so us working class can continue to have our monies passed to the moochers during the time limit.

Posted by: Krissy on Mar 28, 2008 at 09:54 AM
Thats rediculous! Gas prices are high enough, the tax for gas is already high enough.

Posted by: mike Location: C.B. on Mar 28, 2008 at 09:54 AM
To those who think the gas companies are raking in the profits, check with your elected officials. Government (fed, state) profits more off of a gallon of gas than the oil companies do!! and they don't contribute to the production or distribution. Your complaints shouldn't be toward the oil companies but with out of control, promise the world to everyone, Government!!

Good questions what are they doing with all the other millions of dollars that they take from tax payers and now they want to take more millions from hard working tax payers. These politicians are not going to quit until we are destroyed. What do they care they are set up in their big houses let something bad happen to them and see what happens their little families I can assure you would not tolerate it.

Politicians are so corrupt they try to suck us dry especially the hard working people that are not on welfare But are not rich either. Why don't they spend their time getting lazy people off welfare to gets jobs so we don't have to support their lazy habits. Instead their finding ways to ruin our lives. CORRUPT,CORRUPT SNAKES is all I can think of these politicians all of them!

That's right. Keep taxing people out of Nebraska. The legislature doesn't get it. Nebraska is the 8th highest taxed state in the country. Where does the money go? The roads aren't anything to write home about and the kids aren't any smarter. Why would anyone want to continue to live in this state? Sounds like a good time to move across the river and save some money. Also a lesser chance of getting robbed, carjacked or shot. Omaha ain't that great.

Posted by: Liz Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 08:10 AM
We in Omaha and Lincoln are subsidizing the roads in out state Nebraska. It is time to give that part of the state to Wyoming!

I say, lets all STOP buying gas in omaha if this happens. Its just a couple minutes to go over the bridge. If we all ban together and STOP buying gas here, masybe they will think again.

Posted by: J Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 06:56 AM
Have you ever driven by a road construction site and seen a NDOR truck sitting there with some guy reading the newspaper or doing a crossword puzzle and wonder why the heck we are paying them to do that all day long???? With better management we could put roads money into the roads, not salaries of an inflated employee count.

Nebraska wants to bring new jobs into the state, and continues to make it impossible to compete with the rest of the states. Sure, they give tax breaks to business to come into the state, but you know who pays for that. Taxes are one of the main reasons that I no longer live in Nebraska. I am now a resident of Alabama. For example, my car taxes in Nebraska were $300 and the same car in Alabama is $75. And Alabama has better and more paved roads than Nebraska.

Posted by: Bill Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 05:10 AM
My wife and I will continue to buy gas in Iowa. We live close enough that it is worth the 5 mile round trip. That is another reason for us to move out of Netaxme. Seems like everytime you turn around, someone else wants to take money out of your pockets for some stupid thing - right Mayor Fahey?

Posted by: No One Location: Omaha on Mar 28, 2008 at 02:48 AM
We have got to have the biggest bunch of MORONS sitting in the legislature. Ok yea, lets raise gas taxes at a time when gas prices are at an all time high. The reason gas tax revenue is down because like myself, people are going over to Iowa to get gas where it's cheaper due to lower taxes. GET A CLUE PEOPLE! Maybe it is time for a REVOLUTION!!!!!!

Posted by: Chris Location: LV on Mar 27, 2008 at 10:22 PM
That's right, Gary, now's the time to stop giving money to people illegally receiving welfare. The government maintains a pool of illegal recipients just so they can cut them in times like this. Seriously, Gary, if our government knows who the illegal recipients are, do you think they'd still be paying them, until someone throws up their hands and says, "It's been long enough we've been paying these illegal recipients!"

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 27, 2008 at 10:18 PM
Legislature: "Ooops! We already spent the money we raised through gas taxes to fix the roads. Time to come up with more taxes!"

I truly doubt that anyone will notice another 4.5 cents given that gas prices have been regularly up and down 10 cents and I see still just as much traffic out there. Road construction has stalled. You can't count on the feds to fund things. Go ahead and drive to Iowa with your 15 mpg SUVs "on principle". With gas at $3.259 for regular, you'll lose money. If you really object - try riding the bus, trading in the Suburban or Hummer or letting your kids walk the 6 blocks to school.

Hmmm, Council Bluffs has casinos, low taxes, fairly good roads, crime consistent with nebraska. Maybe our state leaders will catch a clue and allow casinos in Nebraska. Everyone worries about them, but go to Council Bluffs and the majority of cars are from nebraska. There are other means of revenue without taxing the people who can least afford it. I agree with others, raise fines for speeding, DUI's, etc. Our taxes are already some of the highest in the U.S. Lets not make it worse. Thank you to the Governor, at least someone in Lincoln is not out to screw the people.

Thank you B. The gas tax is a USER FEE. It has barely increased during the last 20 years and because of that our roads are in disrepair. Roads are already subsidized by general funds. If drivers paid the TRUE cost of driving, then we would see more mass transit because in the long run it will be the most economical and better for the environment.

Posted by: Brian on Mar 27, 2008 at 06:39 PM
Ouch! $6,000 a year for school. I can take a couple more pennies on gas. I bet Nebraska is going for the highest taxing state. Not sure if it is the highest. Can't wait!!!

Posted by: Brian on Mar 27, 2008 at 06:37 PM
Casino revenue would help? Like the money wouldn't have already been blown on somebody else's pet project. By the way...all of you conserving gas...you'll pay for it anyway...drive less or buy more fuel efficient cars means we buy less gas...which means gas tax revenues go down...which means...they'll raise the tax again to offset that. We can't win people.

Posted by: John Location: Omaha on Mar 27, 2008 at 06:27 PM
An increase in gas tax would also make food prices and everything else go up. It would also give Nebraskans more incentive to buy gas and do their shopping in Iowa. Instead of raising the gas tax, how about a tax on recreational vehicles. Motorboats ATVs, dirtbikes, Trucks used for non-business related purposes. Such a tax would help decrease our depedency on foreign oil, hopefully encourage motorist to drive more fuel efficient vehicles, and perhaps motivate people to drive less. Which hopefully will help decrease the smog in Omaha and Lincoln. Go Heineman.

Posted by: Brad L. Location: Las Vegas on Mar 27, 2008 at 06:20 PM
As a born/raised Omahan living in Vegas, I can safely tell you that casino revenue won't do much good. Have you seen the prices here? In fact, go to http://www.vegasprices.com. Doing the math there, you'll see that the average price for regular is 3.32/gal, 3.54/gal for premium, and 3.96/gal for diesel. Roads here are horrible, and well behind compared to the growth here. Casino revenue isn't helping much because the NV DOT needs that for the roads just to break even! What's needed is more (read: better) mass transit. Unfortunately, Omaha, Vegas, and other cities just aren't built with that kind of infrastructure. But it's going to be needed soon, lest those left who can afford to drive are those who invested in oil, like our President, VP, and Exxon/Chevron. It's a sad state when our elected politicians want to fleece us.

We are getting totally fleeced by the big oil companies as they are putting up record profits all accross the board and now the government wants a little piece of that action too. How conveniant. A bag of shredded cheese that used to cost $1.50 not too long ago now runs about $5.00 Pretty soon we will all starting trying to flee to Mexico for relief as opposed to everyone trying to get in here for the great American dream. If you would enjoy paying $4.00 or $5.00 a gallon for gas and $6.00 for a gallon of milk...stick around. I guess you could always start a work from home business...and live off your own personal garden and livestock... fun.

Posted by: B Location: Omaha on Mar 27, 2008 at 05:53 PM
As much as we all hate taxes, this is something that needs to be done. I do have to question why the increase is so drastic. I understand that construction costs have increased along with everything else. The bottom line is that we need to maintain the roads now to avoid even larger bills in the future.

This will no doubt be blamed on Mike Fahey.

Who are the lawmakers that want to destroy us til the end. Are these "Lawmakers going to ask our bosses to give us a raise so we can pay for this insane gas prices I THINK NOT.

What has happened to the millions of dollars we have already paid in taxes that were supposed to be for the roads? The amount that has been paid to the state and federal government is not what we have received so far. Perhaps too many fact finding trips for lame duck senators and too much graft has finally caught up with them!

This bill is insane!!! Is the mayor on the Ne. Dept of Roads as well ???

Maybe instead of raising the gas tax, these lawmakers should earn their pay and find ways to cut spending. The easy way out is just raise taxes.

We could reclaim a lot of money from the welfare system by putting a time limits on it. Also, kicking people off that are illegally on it. Think of all the money we 'give' away every month there. We could finance some of those road projects, the new stadium, help out the school system, etc. Time to take a hard look at what we give out and make some changes. Welfare is there for 'true need' not for subsidizing a lazy life-style. Get a job and help us pay for something!

Can the lawmakers in this state see no other options but raising taxes? We're all hurting in this economy. Ordinary citizens are forced to cut spending. Why can't government do the same?

GOOD JOB legislature kick us when we're down. Thank you gov. for trying to help!

Is our legislature going mad? Run a follow-up article showing what the taxes are in NE for a gal of gas compared to ALL other states. I would wager (if it were legal in NE) that we are in the top ten already. We DO NOT want to be #1 in that category. You want another avenue? Enforce the speed limit and make the fines about 3 times what they are now. We keep hearing how people are making so much more money than they used to. So, a $100 fine is nothing. Slap them with $300 for 10 MPH over and see if that works. If 25% of the people slow down, it will also decrease accident stats and gas will go further (50 mph vs 60, etc). EVERY night when I go from 680 to the Kennedy, I am passed by virtually every car even though I am doing between 60-65. That includes the police. ENFORCE the speed limit and you'll have plenty of bucks to spend.

Raise the gas tax? Nice, why not forget about the new stadium and put that money towards the roads. Private donations or not. Shoot, within a few months I will not be able to afford to get to work, let alone eat. Way to help out the economy

If the fools in the legislature raise the gasoline tax, I will drive accross the river for all my gas purchases. Incovenient or not, I'll do it just out of principle.

Our governor doesnt care about the working man who is strugleing to make endsmeet as long as he get a good bonus's at the end of the year. Give the working man a brake. Dave heineman is just as nuts in the head as mayor mike fahey.

Are those guys totally nuts? The Governer is right! Now IS NOT the time to raise taxes. Nebraska is really good at getting in their residents pockets as it is and gas NE gas tax is one of the highest. Enough is enough , people! Do that and I'll not buy another gallon of gas in Nebraska. Period!
