"Bring it back because my wife needs a set of wheels"

A Michigan couple living in Omaha because the wife needs several transplants suffered another blow Wednesday when a thief stole their pickup.

"I need a liver, two kidneys, small bowel,” says Joni Dibble. “I have small bowel syndrome and a pancreas."

Dibble doesn't get around much on her own. When she eats, it's been intravenously. The method, called TPN, beat back her illness for 11 years, but time has forced Joni and her husband of 30 years to Omaha.

"The sooner you get there, the better off you are,” says Dan Dibble. She needs multiple transplants to survive and after Wednesday morning they also need a ride.

"I got upthis morning, had breakfast and got ready to take her to dialysis and there was a van parked where my truck had been,” says Dan. “It was gone."

Their forest green 1997 Chevy Silverado extended cab truck with a topper, bronze running boards and Michigan license plates, parked a few feet from their hotel room had been stolen.

"This has been a big kick,” says Joni. “It's devastated Dan and I. It's horrible to lose our transportation. If the pager goes off right now, we don't have a way to get to the hospital."

Dan, who carries the pager, has a plea for the thief. "Bring it back because my wife needs a set of wheels."

If Joni is able to get a transplant in the next two months, the couple would likely be here for six more months.

"I can't believe it,” says Joni. “Our truck, we saved and saved and saved."

"It's like being in the middle of a desert,” says Dan. “You're on your own. I have to depend on somebody or something. I can't afford to buy a vehicle right now."

If you see the pickup, call police. The Dibbles would be grateful.

Tracy- OPD has a high volume of calls, especially with officer numbers so low and so little to go on, police can only do so much. At least if they pull it over they'll take it back for you. Other than that you can't ask for much more of them.

Don't they have insurance? File a claim. My experience: If your vehicle is found, it then towed to the impound lot and you must pay the fee to get it out. The fee could be $150. Triple whammy for them to pay 3 times; in different ways. I'll say a prayer for them.

I agree with everyoneelse. Step up Omaha Dealers. I used to be in the business, I know how it works. You make enough money on almost everyone else and donate vehicles to people like coaches. Have a heart, I know its hard, but don't just loan them a truck, give them one.

Lets hear all about those "Midwestern Values" and "Heartland Values" and all the other catch phrases people throw out there regarding Omaha. Give me a break! This city has as much crime, if not more, than any city in the US.

This would be a good opportunity for Huber to clean up their soiled name - they could let these folks use a loaner car.

This is awful. But don't they have any auto insurance? I'm sure someone would step up with the deductible amount if necessary.

I'll side with Dave on this one, but think that should also apply to anyone that steals.

This is very sad. If I had a car to donate I would. Does anyone know how to start a fund to help these people in getting something to get them around town? I feel really sorry for these people. Who ever did this needs to be ashamed of themselves not just there are out of towners but b/c they did this

I am very sorry for this couple. Unfortunately, it happened in Omaha, where the police do not go after car thiefs. I know from personal experience that the police will only file a report a then do NOTHING. Even if their vehicle is found, the police will do NOTHING to try and find the person that stole it. They will simply file a recovery report. Nothing is being done to stop these thefts from happening. Until the Omaha Police start actively looking for car theifs, this will continue to happen.

Kevin...the reality is that this thief did hurt someone! His actions has caused stress upon this family and cannot help in Ms. Dibble's recovery. His thoughtless and criminal actions has also cost them valuable time getting to the hospital when organs are available. So yes, his actions whether intended or not did hurt someone and I hope he is caught and jailed for his actions.

Karma...it will come back to the thief. I am so sorry that this low life made an already difficult situation for this family even more difficult!

NE is a great place, except for the few jerks that don't want to make an honest living. These people have enough on their plate. RETURN THE TRUCK AND GET A JOB AND BUY YOUR OWN.

Posted by: Kris Location: Omaha on Mar 27, 2008 at 09:35 AM
Come on Omaha Car dealers, you get a bad rep all the time, step up to the plate and donate a new car to this family in need at a very difficult time in their lives for them to keep.

This is disheartening and makes me embarrassed to say I am from Omaha. If I had an extra vehicle, I would gladly give it to them.

Posted by: R Location: Omaha on Mar 27, 2008 at 08:47 AM
Why isn't a car dealership around town willing to loan them a rental? That is messed up.

Posted by: Meg Location: Omaha on Mar 27, 2008 at 07:44 AM
    Sad, just plain sad!!!!!!!!

Posted by: BJ Location: Papillion on Mar 27, 2008 at 07:32 AM
Check with the tow lot. Maybe they were parked in a tow away zone. We all know how our towing companies are here in Omaha.

Posted by: Kevin Location: Omaha on Mar 27, 2008 at 06:53 AM
Dave- that's a bit much, this is your ordinary car thief, he or she didn't try to hurt anyone, and while I do think they should be caught, death is a ridiculous thing to wish upon them. My prayers go out to this couple.

Crime is running rampant in this city. I guess no one is home in the mayor's office. Oh wait...he is out at the ballpark!

So Sorry...but welcome to Omaha, the crime capitol of the Midwest...

Posted by: Chris Location: Bellevue on Mar 26, 2008 at 10:26 PM
That's awful. I hope the thief feels remorse or a good Samaritan cam step forward. Omaha's been great at this in the past.

Posted by: Aubra Lewis Location: Omaha on Mar 26, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Come on Omaha. Let's show this couple in town for some transplants some of our generosity and hospitality. Maybe a rental?

Posted by: Anon Location: NE on Mar 26, 2008 at 10:13 PM
Welcome to Omaha! Please know that this is not what this city is made of. Give it time and the heart of Omaha will pour out to you. I pray for you and your health and well being. I'm sorry for your trouble.

Posted by: Dave Location: Omaha on Mar 26, 2008 at 09:54 PM
Who ever stole the truck is worthless scum and I hope they die a slow painful death very soon.

Posted by: shanon Location: omaha on Mar 26, 2008 at 09:54 PM
    welcome to omaha!

Posted by: Concerned Omahan on Mar 26, 2008 at 09:49 PM
I wish I could afford to buy this couple a new truck. I am so sorry for their experience here in Omaha. Please know that the criminal who stole your truck does not reflect the true character of the people of Omaha. Thoughts and prayers are with you for healing!
