The Omaha Police Department put out the call looking for a few good men, women and minorities to help fill their ranks and got more than a few. A record breaking 1,500 people applied to join.

OPD had a goal of 20 percent of the applicants to be women. It came close at 15 percent. A look at the numbers shows 929 actually took the test. Of that group, 274 are minorities and 156 of the minority applicants are women.

Police say women play a vital role on the force. "One thing good about women on the police department is we do respond to some sensitive calls with some females and a lot of times those females are more comfortable talking to a female officer, so that is a big part of it," says Omaha Police Lt. Darci Tierney.

Currently the OPD has 747 active officers with 151 of them female. So who are they looking for?

"We like to have people who have common sense because that's a big part of our job, talking to people, problem solving, so those types of skills are very important to us," says Lt. Tierney.

The women we talked to say their male counterparts are respectful. "Most of the male officers are really supportive, not really what I thought it would be,” says Lt. Tierney. “There wasn't as many obstacles as I thought once I got into it."

Wednesday was a special day for Officer Kelly Nownes, one of three officers honored. She saved a man's life last July 16th when 65-year-old James Clark was found brutally beaten and stuffed inside the trunk of a vehicle.

"We just followed what appeared to us at the time to be drag marks on the ground,” says Officer Nownes. She says it was all part of the job, a job she's always dreamed of doing. "I've always wanted to be a police officer. I've always kind of wanted to help people."

"It's definitely a great job for females,” says Officer Nownes. “There should be no worries about joining. We welcome every female who wants to apply."

Lt. Tierney encourages women to apply and if you have any questions, they have female officers on hand to talk to. They also have tips to help you prepare for the recruitment process.

If a woman's gender makes her the best for a job, hire her! If a black man's race makes him the best for a job, hire him! Not everything can be quantified by tests, but we still use tests to justify avoiding the tough decisions and putting the wrong people in jobs for the "right" reasons. Quotas are a joke. Just like when that idiot Walter Mondale said he'd pass over more qualified candidates to pick a woman for the job. That was the most obvious abuse of quotas I've ever seen, and the voters appeared to agree!

Good luck for those who do want to get on. I heard 40 positions. Figure 20% female, 20% minority. That leaves 24. Then there previous law enforcement applicants (ie NHP, Elkhorn,Lincoln) who will be guaranteed a certain % of those 24. So less than 20 applicants are chosen out of 900 who tested. Getting on doesn't sound that easy to me with that many applicants trying. Especially when more than 1/2 the positions are already filled before the process even starts.

Deceit, it's obvious you never watched the news in the Omaha area. Recently retired Chief Thomas Warren IS black. There are many black, latino and asian officers on the force. I personally don't know about native american. From what you wrote, I see you really do live in a "State of Falsehoods." Wow!

You people are lying and complaining at the same time about how "minorities" is over running the Omaha Police Department. Oh really?! When was the last time you EVER seen a black, latino, Native American or asian officer?! Give me a break!

You are right Sam you have to pass to move on, but females and minorities that do pass, but don't score as high as other candidates will be moved on. It's been going on for years. By the way passing is a 65%. If someone can't pass that they have no business being anywhere near a police cruiser.

To: anonymous Go for it then. I bet you couldn't cut it though. You have to pass written, physical and pshych evaluations as well as a few interviews. The reason the benefits are good is because it is a tough job that not everyone is qualified for.

Kevin: I’m a female that took the test and did not pass. I only needed 2 points to move on. If they were going out of the way to get us females hired, don’t you think they would have made an exception? It’s does not matter if you’re black, white, hispanic, or female. You have to pass to move on…

I agree with Puzzled - why are minorities listed separately?

Posted by: Unknown Location: Omaha on Mar 27, 2008 at 10:30 AM
I took the police test and I agree, they need to hire the best officers, not just hire to fill quota's. I'm a white male and I wouldn't be suprised to see a female or minority get hired over me even if they score lower on the test just to fulfill their quota.

If everyone on here is so concerned about this so called "gravy train" retirement, why don't they hop on it!??!! If it was so gravy, then why are these individuals risking their lives everyday for this community and your families?? So until you want to knock these individuals, get your coward-self out in a cruiser, arm yourself with a weapon at 1:30 am, and run down to North Omaha. Then we will see how much "GRAVY" is involved in this job!!!

Sign 'em up and get 'em on the street before they realize the lucrative benefits package expired last year! I can imagine the interview conversations. "So, what are your health and retirement benefits?" "Well, we haven't finalized the current negotiations, but this was our last contract!"

Posted by: Kevin Location: Omaah on Mar 26, 2008 at 06:44 PM
too many people complain of not being represented in their communities, so until those people realize that white men can want justice just as much as a woman or minority, we'll be stuck in a civil rights happy employment field on OPD. Nothing is wrong with female officers, but there should be no need to go out of the way to get them.

I can hear it now and I'm sure I'll be reading it soon. There are so many applicants because people want to get in on the gravy train etc. blah blah blah. The people that get hired from this applicant pool will not have the same retirement benefits 25 years from now when they are ready to retire. Just like the people that retired over the last year did not know what there retirement would be when they started 22 to 25 years ago. I don't understand the point of the story where a record number of people applied (1500) I doesn't matter is 3000 applied it matters how many showed up to test. Less than 1000 actually tested, so the other 500 are irrelevant.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 26, 2008 at 05:30 PM
Do new recruits of OPD and OFD fall under the lucritive retirement packages the current employees have? If so, I'll go apply.

Posted by: puzzled on Mar 26, 2008 at 05:11 PM
Are minorities neither men nor women? If not, what then? I am puzzled why minorities are listed in this article seperately.

Posted by: Quota System Location: Nebraska on Mar 26, 2008 at 05:08 PM
Better hurry up and pack the ranks with race and gender quota hires, before it's prohibited by state law!

Posted by: JJ Location: Omaha on Mar 26, 2008 at 05:05 PM
I agree with the statement below. Hire the best, don't hire because of minority quotas. We need fair and honest police on the force and just becasue they happen to be white males, doesn't mean they shouldn't be included. The quota system should go in the toilet.

Posted by: Geoff R. Location: Omaha on Mar 26, 2008 at 04:58 PM
Agree OPD REALLY needs a lot of good men and women on the force. Streets need a really good cleaning of criminals

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 26, 2008 at 04:03 PM
opd needs to be hiring the best available, not making quotas for minorities and women. Im so tired of hearing that crap. if the top 40 people are white males, then those 40 people need to be in the academy. Ive heard many stories of white males being bumped from the academy becasue of a quoat opd needed to have to get minorities and females into the academy, even though they had lower scores in all categories. HIRE THE BEST, no matter who they are, those are the ones I want protecting me.
