A three-vehicle accident shut down both lanes of traffic on Highway 36 between 138th Street and 156th streets Wednesday morning, sending three drivers to the hospital.

Investigators say a westbound van driven by 34-year-old Juan Ortiz of Council Bluffs was stopped and about to turn left onto 149th Street at 7:50 a.m.

A car, driven by 18-year-old Shawn Nelson of Omaha, hit the van from behind. The impact sent the van into the path of an SUV driven by 18-year-old Mary Goetz of Bennington.

"Another vehicle struck that vehicle in the rear, another vehicle eastbound was struck nearly head-on by the first vehicle that was getting ready to turn left causing a near head-on accident," says the Nebraska State Patrol’s Eric Grossoehme.

Ortiz was transported to the hospital via medical helicopter and was listed in critical condition.

Goetz was taken by ambulance to Creighton University Medical Center and listed in fair condition. Nelson was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital.

The highway reopened around 11 a.m.

According to experts, if you notice a vehicle coming up fast behind you, it's a good idea to pump your brake lights to try and get the driver’s attention. What you don't want to do is have your wheels turned because a collision could send you into oncoming traffic.

The driver that was attempting to make a left-haned turn was not doing anything wrong or illegal, he was stopped and had his left blinker on, as several witnesses reported. This is simply another case of drivers failing to pay attention when driving, it can be easy to "space out" when driving the highway - but just pay attention. It's simple as that. I agree with most of the other comments, just slow down and be aware of your surroundings. And also, I strongly agree with "J" from Bennington who talked about no turn lanes, what are people supposed to do? Just not there? Well, that is not always an option. Drive carefully.

thank you Ms. Nelson, those are actually great things to know!!!

So the one person with the least amount of injury is the one that caused the whole thing.

Just another example of how poor drivers we've become.

This road is getting more and more dangerous. This needs to be a limited access highway, where people can only get on or off at a controlled intersection, like 156th street. Additional development needs to not have direct access to the highway.

To Anonymous - Bennington/Omaha: You're probably aware that's a worksite at the accident site and Mr. Ortiz had to turn left to get to work. Just beyond that is a road where people (myself included) turn off to get to businesses. There's a solid yellow line there, too. No turn lane there. No turn lane up at 168th St, 180th St, 186th St, 192nd St or again until you get to 204th (Hwy 31). What do you propose that motorists do? Not turn left at any of those places? Just turn left at 156th or 204th? How about other motorists just pay attention to what they're doing, just like you would do on any 2 lane highway?

Don't blame it on the teen...i think i kno that boy... maybe. if its the guy im thinking of, he's a good kid. quiet type. so don't blame it on him. Anything could of been a reason, not just a cell phone, Buddy. Teenagers arent bad drivers, most of them

Posted by: Biff Location: Elkmaha on Mar 27, 2008 at 09:26 AM
Buddy - I transport my kids to two different schools. While it's true that I do see teenagers driving poorly, it's just as likely that a person being reckless behind the wheel is a PARENT. Stupid drivers come in all ages around here.

I am the mother of the teenager and was at the scene of the accident. I have driven highway 36 for over 17 years on my way to work. It receives the most rescue squad calls from our fire department. The driver of the westbound van was making an illegal left turn across no passing zone double lines into a temporary driveway. The road conditions were wet and the teen driver was not on the cell phone or speeding. Luckily everyone was wearing seatbelts and all involved will live. Speed was not a factor since this road is heavily patrolled and speeders are caught nearly every day. Anyone that drives this road regularly knows not to speed because you WILL be caught. Granted, this is a young driver and was a horrible situation. Our prayers go out to both of the other drivers. The state patrol called me this morning and Mr. Ortiz is expected to fully recover and is in a much improved condition. ACCIDENTS can happen to people of all ages. One thing IS for sure, SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES.

Where does it say he was following too close? It doesn't. The van was at a stop, which means Shawn wasn't paying attention to the road ahead. I'll have to agree with some of you - no matter what your age, get off the phone and/or quit texting while you drive.

Posted by: CS Location: Omaha on Mar 27, 2008 at 08:51 AM
Thom - I have to make adjustments for speeders all the time. Merge timing is changed. Speeders cut 2-3 lanes at a time just to get 1 car lenght ahead (with no signals of lane change). Don't stop of stop signs. They pass you just to be behind the person you were following till they change lanes 3 more time to pass 1 more car. Then guess what, you get to your exit (off the interstate) and your right behind the person that passed you 2-3 miles back. Got Way Ahead. Just Obey the Law!

I am not sure how a person that is sitting stopped on the highway--turning left across a SOLID yellow line does not create a very dangerous driving condition for any driver- young or old...I know that one of the first lessons in driving is certainly not to stop or slow down to such a hazardous speed on a 60 mile an hour road...and turning left across a solid line seems like the first wrong decision on that stretch of highway!! I have driven that road many times and have been tempted to turn left but knew it would be a dangerous decision for myself and other drivers around me!!

Posted by: Anon Location: NE on Mar 26, 2008 at 10:16 PM
BUDDY I have news for you. Not all teenagers are stupid...how dare you judge them...I've witnessed plenty of grown adults following too close, weaving in and out of traffic and using their cell phone at the same time speeding. Open your eyes.

Posted by: Concerned Bennington H.S. Parent Location: Bennington on Mar 26, 2008 at 09:12 PM
Accidents happen every day. It seems as if the emphasis is on the fact that a teenager was envolved. This could have happened to anyone no matter what their age is.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: omaha on Mar 26, 2008 at 07:52 PM
to buddy. Not every teenager is stupid.. and not every teenager in an accident is on a cell phone that is why they call it an accident.. they are less experienced on the roads and dont know really how to drive the best but that does not mean they are stupid-some are but not all. and rear ending can happen to anybody.

Posted by: doris on Mar 26, 2008 at 07:23 PM
To all of you who think teenagers shouldn't be allowed to drive may I please ask when did you get your licenses?? Were/are you an absolutely perfect driver at all times? Yes there was probably speed involved and following too closely--but that happens with adult drivers too. Quit painting all teanagers as bad--remember you were one once--By the way I am a senior citzen not a teenager.

I live off HWY36 I seen the life flight and just started praying. The HWY 36 has claimed so many lives of our friends and family. I hope everyone is going to be OK. Shawn we love you.

Driving too slow is more dangerous than driving too fast. Example: How many times have you ever had to make a driving adjustment for another car driving too fast? My guess is zero- How many times have you had to make a driving adjustment for a slow car, My guess is all the time, either braking or turning the wheel or makeing some sort of movement because another car is going too slow. It happens alot... Something to think about. Slow driving can be dangerous. The biggest danger on our roads these days are illegal aliens with no ins. coverage and no drivers license. The focus should be put on that for safe roads.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 26, 2008 at 05:16 PM
People driving too fast, and not paying attention is a problem on all roads these days.

Posted by: Buddy Location: Omaha on Mar 26, 2008 at 05:11 PM
Just one more example of a stupid teen age driver. I will bet money he was on his cell phone and speeding. There is absolutely no excuse for rear ending another car. Teenagers are idiots and should not be allowed to drive.

Posted by: J Location: Bennington on Mar 26, 2008 at 04:22 PM
I'm surprised that the driver of the car that initiated the accident was an Omahan. The tailgaters that I notice are mostly 5 county plates east-west and 29 county north-south. Can't pass on that stretch of Hwy 36 anyways - what was Nelson thinking? Don't tell me - she was either talking on her cell or texting.

Posted by: Ryan Location: Omaha on Mar 26, 2008 at 04:14 PM
I doubt speed was a factor here. Failure to control the vehicle was a factor. If you run into another car at 10 mph or 100 mph, you still run into the other car. The lesson to be learned: Watch the road ahead of you. If there is an obstacle, steer around it. If going around is unsafe (traffic or ditch next to you), stop. If you are unable to stop, it means you are following too closely.

Posted by: Bek Location: Bellevue on Mar 26, 2008 at 03:23 PM
Sounds like the cadillac was following too closely...learn how to drive

Posted by: Sandra Location: Bennington on Mar 26, 2008 at 02:43 PM
I live near Bennington and sometimes drive that highway and the people that drive on that highway drive like maniacs!! They need to SLOW DOWN! Accidents happen on that road ALL THE TIME!

Posted by: Biff Location: Elkmaha on Mar 26, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Hope everyone that was injured recovers fully. Of course, we don't know for sure because we weren't there, but speed probably was a factor. Everyone just needs to SLOW DOWN. Speed limits are in place for a reason, and yes, they apply to ALL of us.

Posted by: Margie Location: Blair on Mar 26, 2008 at 11:22 AM
please, please stop following so close and slow down. nobody needs to be in that big of a hurry!

Posted by: Annette Location: South Omaha on Mar 26, 2008 at 09:58 AM
    Wow! Drive slow and safe.
